That is the way to look at it because next year he is very likely to either extend or move on.Option A below costs 7M more than option B:
- Option A: Crawford on the roster in 2019 but not on the roster in 2020.
- Option B: Crawford not on the roster in either 2019 or 2020.
In order words the cost to keep Crawford for 2019 is 7M.
Few guys are going to play out the string.
Team loses all leverage and pays max cost in that scenario.
Think TC and Cowboys are both in great spots right now.
Contending team with a vet guy who has made good money and likely wants to stick around.
Cheapest way would be extend him now.Yes and a little over 2 mil is dead money. Hit cap hit for 2019 is 9+mil
Cheaper to keep him this year and just cut him after the season. Unless you need his 7mil right now to sign a guy.
Restructure and add 2 year to the deal. But DL stopped doing that to be cap conservative and pay as they go.
DAL has 23M in cap space right now so really no need to make room. They could sign Zeke, Dak and Amari for 23M in additonal hits this season.
In 2 years could be very different though.
