Lael Collins resigning (on a team friendly deal) really surprised me. So what happens with our OL next year? Has any team ever had six starting OL where the odd man out was a former 2nd round pick?

The plan was for McGovern to start at OG and Conner Williams to replace Collins at RT. So what do you do now?

Make Williams a super sub backing up multiple positions? Trade McGovern? Keep Williams on the bench and groom him to replace Tyron Smith down the line?

IMO the Super Sub plan is the way to go.

McGover is going to have to beat him out too. McGovern could wind up the next Looney, backing up OC and OG

I think this whole thing indicates they have a plan.

1. Smith goes down Williams moves to tackle and McGovern moves to guard.

2. FredBeard goes down McGovern moves to center.

You might see Connor Williams cross-trained at tackle but it's going to be a battle between McGovern and Williams next year for left guard. McGovern was a 3rd round pick though, there wasn't much talk about Chaz Green tacking over as a starter when he went 3rd Round and Jourdan Lewis isn't starting as a 3rd round CB. Why are people so high on McGovern?

Williams to LT is the one I like, assuming he's at least good at it. Otherwise you wait until their contract's almost up then trade either Williams or McGovern (not sure what I'd want in return; probably a pick or two because I doubt we'd get a good TE or S in return).

Bob Sturm did a long scouting report on McGovern and felt he was clearly better than Williams. Williams does look like a new player this year however. Its funny that most teams have 3 or 4 starting caliber OL and we have six.

After Chaz Green, we should lower our expectations on 3rd round OL.

I assume the LG job is Williams to claim. If he steps up his game his second season then McGovern becomes a primary backup. If not, McGovern gets a shot at the job and Williams becomes a backup. Either one hopefully we'll be a super sub instead of a mediocre one, but we don't know that yet.

Think Tyron is soon the odd man out due to retirement.

I don’t think it was the plan to move on from Collins and move Williams to RT. That was fan speculation and wishful thinking.
And I don’t thing now is the plan to move on from Williams and replace him with McGovern.

It was a value pick at the time to hedge against several things. In case they did not get a deal worked out with Collins, as well was it to have MCGovern play some C in case Frederick was not 100%

Or possible moves in the future Incase Tyron can’t go because of his back in a few years.

It will be interesting.

William's will have the obvious advantage to start out, and I'd be shocked if he weren't our guard in 2020.

I think Williams was more a project at OG. I think if the weight doesnt push him to a +starter level this year, odds are McGovern beats him out

I think Williams looks only marginally better than he did last year but preseason is so hard to gauge. Most of the time he was playing against 2nd string talent. If he can't play LG, I don't see how he can move to LT. Larry Allen was one of the best Guards to ever play in the NFL and he struggled at tackle. I see Connor Williams height and weight listed and then I look at him and he looks undersized. I don't get it. We haven't seen McGovern play at all, but he looks the part and he has that Zack Martin type OL attitude. I would not be surprised if McGovern is the starting LG next year.
