Conner Williams, Super Sub?

The Cowboys claimed they only moved him to guard because of the injuries and that he volunteered, didn't have to. Probably wanted to show them his versatility.

Did he play any snaps at OT in the ps games?

They must see him as an OT option considering how many interior OL they currently have on the roster.

I don't see any of La'el, Fleming or Knight as ideal options at LT. They all seem better suited to RT, IMO.

Sua-Filo is fine as a backup but he was cut by the Titans and then got killed in pass protection last year. Bob Sturm did a breakdown of every sack in 2018 and had Sua-Filo responsible for giving up seven sacks in his 8 starts. He is good in run blocking but I really can't see him starting over McGovern or Williams.

Somebody here at CZ had the observation that Su'a-Filo is much better when he plays RG than LG.

I have not watched game footage to verify but I remember someone making good case for it.

I'm not pretending to know if Williams is capable of overcoming the ideal OT body type profile deficit that was cited by people paid for their opinions. I'm just repeating what they said immediately after he was drafted, and I'm sure many others heard what I heard and it's nothing new.

The article referenced Dan Skipper as the top option. Skipper has since been cut and signed to the practice squad.

If Belichick has Wynn listed as the starter, then I assume Wynn can do it.

McGovern or Williams aren't going to bring any value until they have proven they can play at this level. Sometimes it takes lineman a few years to develop especially when you draft ta 21 year old kid and throw him up against 300lb plus men.

I don't know what we have in Williams yet, but I don't see him as a starting left tackle in the NFL..

I don’t know about the pros, but he was a very good college tackle. IIRC , is arms are an inch or two shorter than average tackles, but he has all the other tools. I think the only sacks he gave up his last season in college was to Armstrong when Texas played Kansas.

2018 Guide: What Ourlads' NFL Scouting Services said about CONNOR WILLIAMS: Texas, 6051 296 5.05. Junior entry and two-year starter from Coppell, TX. Heading into the 2017 season, Williams was tabbed as the top lineman in the class after freshman All-America 2015 and All-America 2016 seasons. The thick, powerful, yet graceful athlete checked all the boxes when it came to franchise left tackle prospects. However just a few games into his junior year, he suffered a knee sprain and missed the majority of the season. He did return for the final two regular season matchups, but he left 2017 with more questions than answers. Has the proper blend of length and girth on his frame. Body-wise, he is further along than most prospects coming out. Mechanically he shows a great first few steps as a run blocker. He fires out low and fast with his hands ready to bench press his target on contact. There is a sudden jolt seen in the defender when Williams squares him up. In pass protection, he is patient. Lets the action come to him and usually times his contact well. Absorbs a bull rush with ease. He is tough to beat in a true one-on-one situation. He can get into trouble against lower, quicker defenders. Will sometimes over-commit his upper body and bend at the waist. He is one of the top tackles in this class. He fell primarily because he had a knee injury before his final season which caused him to not play nearly as well as he had in previous seasons.

The 2nd reason is that he weight in at 296 pounds for the combine. Tyron weighed 307 and that was considered about the minimum without impacting an OTs draft status.

Some draft analysts had him rated as a 1st round pick at OT.

His arm length is about the same as for La'el Collins. Team's prefer longer arm length for LTs but he has super quick feet which offset a lack of elite arm length to some extent with regards to LT.

I remember that Williams was rated as a first round pick and Jerry even mentioned that they drafted Williams because they was getting a bargain first round talent in the second round. Williams has a tackle skill set much more than a guards skills set and I don’t understand why he hasn’t had the chance to practice more at tackle.

Brugler had him rated as the 2nd best OT in that draft.

Draftscout had him listed as the #1 OT in that draft.

It made sense for him to just focus on OG as a rookie.

This year Martin was out for most practices and games & McGovern missed the entire preseason.

They say there were short at OG for practices and games.

If McGovern had been healthy, I think maybe CWilliams would have had some practice reps at OT.

With McGovern out, they definitely wanted CWilliams to be the LG all season.

Personally, I would still liked to see him practice some snaps at OT.

They know Su'a-Filo can be OK at LG if they needed CWilliams to play OT due to an injury.

Collins was not good at guard. About one out of ten plays he pancaked somebody. The other nine times he whiffed on his blocks. He was very inconsistent. The problem with Connor was size and strength which he has worked on this offseason.

Lael Collins resigning (on a team friendly deal) really surprised me. So what happens with our OL next year? Has any team ever had six starting OL where the odd man out was a former 2nd round pick?

The plan was for McGovern to start at OG and Conner Williams to replace Collins at RT. So what do you do now?

Make Williams a super sub backing up multiple positions? Trade McGovern? Keep Williams on the bench and groom him to replace Tyron Smith down the line?

IMO the Super Sub plan is the way to go.

I think cowboys are hedging their bets. if neither Williams or McGovern play much (one will, the other may not), then resigning them will be cheap and the cowboys hedging their bets against Smith and Martin's back problems and providing some level of continuity. that's why we paid fleming as well. martin has back issues and so does smith so we have to be prepared as back issues are really tricky.
