Is Kris Richard the problem?

With everyone blasting Marinelli this past few weeks (myself included), maybe its time to point the finger at Richard. After all, he certainly appears to be calling the defense from the sideline. Taking certain factors into account, such as the linebackers going from all-pros to have-nots, and the lackluster secondary play, this all comes as a big surprise. And quite frankly, a huge disappointment. Some of this must fall squarely on his shoulders.

I went on record last year about how this guy might be our savior and bring some real nastiness to the defense. Well clearly that hasn't happened and that side has taken a BIG step backwards. These next two games before the break should tell us a lot about this defense and his bravado on how they're ready to turn the corner.

The season could be in the balance before the bye.

The glaring problem with the defense (besides lack of turnovers) is the defensive line.

If your defensive line doesn't play well, or is ineffective, it greatly affects how your LB's and DB's play. Our DL play has been atrocious, which is Rod Marinelli's bread and butter. Should have been fired after the 2016 playoff loss.

Richard could take over as DC and hire a new line coach. I think Marinelli style has been worn out and predictable. Richard has our secondary playing well. No turnovers but playing pretty good. If we got actual consistent pressure in the qb then maybe we get picks. But our corners also arent getting there heads around and looking for the ball.

Legion of Boom doesn't play Bend But Dont Break!!!

Go watch Dallas film from 2013-2018. You'll see the same defense. BBDB.

"Kris Richard is an American football coach and former player. Richard was instrumental to the formation of the Legion of Boom defensive secondary. He helped coach and develop players such as Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, Brandon Browner, Byron Maxwell and for his rookie season only, Shaquill Griffin."

Agree.

KR needs to be DC with full control of the defense.

Relaying coverage to the DBs during the game isn't the same as being DC.

Richard is responsible for the pass defense.

Rodgers had 238 yards passing and zero passing TDs...

Yup, and it's Marinelli's fault that we don't have a legitimate 1T DT which makes playing DB much harder than it should be.

‘He appears to be calling the plays’??

Anybody who’s been paying attention knows without question he’s been calling the defense since early last season.

That may be, but he doesn't quite have all the tools he needs. Gregory is missing and we've never really been good at the middle part of the dline. Specifically DT. I reckon if we had a better dline, we'd see the secondary play better. And I'd like to see Daniel Wise have a crack at attacking the QB.

The problem with Richard's bend but don't break philosophy is that it needs to be supported by an adequate pass-rushing attack (which we are lacking heavily in).

This is a Rod issue. He always wants to run stunts which allows the offense to get wide open lanes in the run game. Getting a run stuffing DT and having them stay on their gaps would go a long way in helping this defense at every level. Blitz instead of sending 4 all the time

It would work if you had some La’Roi Glover types...which we don’t,haven’t had,nor will have. IMO...anything is better than this tired out routine. It never really gets better, and Rod is too stubborn to see it.

Right now it looks like he is the main problem.

Especially LVE and Jalyon regressing may be his fault.
