Of course the players are going to say these things. It's not like they are going to speak to the media and be like "This guy sucks. He can't lead us to success!" Besides, I have no doubt they may like him as a person. Maybe he is a great guy, but, he cannot coach a team to the promise land.

Garrett is popular with his players. They like him.

But liking a coach doesn’t prove the coach is good. There have been coaches who were popular with players that still got fired for not meeting expectations in the field.

This doesn’t prove much of anything with regards to how competent Garrett is. If the Cowboys lose tomorrow and they miss the playoffs, what Martin thought of Garrett on 11/26/2019 won’t matter all that much.

It's obvious the players like Jason Garrett as head coach because Garrett takes it easy on them and covers up for them. There is no fear of the head coach. Garrett is their buddy who has their backs, so the players don't fear losing their jobs if they continuously screw up on the field, especially the highly paid players like the Oline.

Does anyone believe these players would feel all warm and fuzzy with Jimmy Johnson if he were their head coach? Hell no!!! Jimmy would be busting their tails during the week in practice, and benching anyone, regardless of payscale, if they committed dumb but costly penalties during games consistently!

Jimmy's players hated him during the week because Jimmy would bust their balls while punishing them if they hurt the team on the field. Garrett does the opposite. He babies them, hence the weekly game-costing penalties!:angry:
I believe this to be false. Can you name one time that Jimmy benched one of his highly paid stars? Nope. Jimmy cut guys from the bottom of the roster. The Emmitt's, Aikman's, Irvin's, Williams, Lett's, etc. weren't going to sit or be cut.

When did Jimmy's star players mess up consistently on the field, including his Oline? When? You didn't see it.

You're right. Leon Lett certainly didn't make any mistakes. I'm sure Erik Williams never had a holding penalty, Aikman never threw picks, Irvin never dropped passes, Kevin Smith never got a PI called against him. I'm sure during Jimmy's tenure we never had personal fouls or unsportsmanlike conduct penalties or missed FG's or gave up any blocked kicks. I must have forgotten how perfect Jimmy was as a coach and how perfect those guys were as players.

When did any of Jimmy's Olines consistently commit drive-killing penalties? Name them sarcastic Einstein? I bet you can't. I wonder why not compared to today's Oline that is constantly committing drive-killing penalties?

There's the very reason the Cowboys struggle from year to year- they don't know what to believe in.
They have no one to show them how to become great.
They believe in Jason Garrett because they don't know any better.

Like others have mentioned, Garrett's contract ending at the end of this season, makes it an easy decision for Jerry. He doesn't have to fire him. He just lets him walk.

We see how much the players believe in Garrett, respect Garrett, and like Garrett on Thanksgiving. If they start slow, fall behind and struggle to come back again, the we know Martin is just saying the right things to the media but doesn't really believe it.

I love Martin (huge ND fan here) but I am not even going to open the link - what do you expect the team leaders to say?
"yeah, Garrett is a punk and we can't wait for Jones to sober up and fire him."
Agreed. I guarantee at least half the team is tired of Garrett, but they could never publicly say it

all the above you are statements are true..

add to it I guess noone held out , got in trouble with the law, or had poor attitudes under Jimmy.. the Myth the legend LMAO

all this happen here is not new and happens all over the league and in all generations.Teams are made up of humans and humans have flaws..

BTW if memory serves me right didnt Parcells teams lead in penalty's a few tears? I think they did

Didnt that team of champions in 94/95 against SF NFCCG started the game with 3 huge TIOs got down 21-0 fought back but couldn't overcome and lost by 10? MI had like 2 fumbles? sloppy field as an excuse? weather..hmm

this isnt all on garett its on the players, they are PROS , being paid big time money and the captains on this team have to take control and execute..most of our games were lost because of mistakes by players

NO- fumble by witten, bad oline play, ref bad call of EE fumble- 2 point loss
GB-early INts by Dak regardless of catchable passes or not they set the tone to oose this game-7 point loss
Jets-missing 4 players on offense and the backups couldn't block and defense gave up big plays-2 point loss
MN-cant run block, run, play consistent defense, and ST were horrilbe-4point loss
NE-Int and punt block early going down 10-0 sole reason we lost -4point loss

sure Garett and the coaching staff mad bad decisons in all these games but glaring poor exectuiion is why we lost..MISTAKES BY PLAYERS 19 points total in 5 losses.. limit mistakes in any of those games and we couldn't chamge those scores by 4 points and win 2-3 of them?

the staff wa sunder a scope because the players put the games in jeopardy and created the station the coaches were put in,..

Im not advocating we keep this staff, im ready fpor a complete makeover but players have to be held accountable and these losses were so close, its on 75% on the players..

Of course he does. And of course it get rationalized away. It’s amazing how automatically that happens when it’s not what people want to hear.

What rationalizing?

Garrett is a nice guy. He typically treats the players fairly and they respect him for that. His teams typically play hard and put out effort for him. It should surprise no one that Martin has nice things to say about Garrett, especially in the course of this season. Martin isn't going to dump on the guy at this point.

But that doesn't making him a good coach that gets results on the field. Guys like you are trying to use Martin's words as proof that Garrett is the right man for the job but what Martin says really has no bearing on whether or not Garrett is the coach that can lead us into the playoffs and make a SB run or not. As I said above, what Martin said yesterday won't really matter if they lose tomorrow and/or eventually go on to miss the playoffs (or once again crap out early).

This thread is full of rationalizations. It takes two or three posts to get to “what’s Martin really supposed to say?”

Plenty of players have come out on many occasions to say that Garrett is a knowledgeable coach.

Do you think Bellicheats players love him? I bet they don't. But they respect the heck out of him.

this

Jerry and Garrett know they are incompetent and cannot win the respect of their players because of their football acumen and knowledge so they baby them (Garrett) and over pay them (Jerry) so they will love them and not be overly critical after they leave

Why not? Did human nature and tendencies change that much over the past 25 years? I don't think so.

Look at Billy B. in NE. He doesn't take the tyrannical approach that Jimmy did, but he gets results through a lack of tolerance for stupidity. A level of accountability has to exist or you end up with an atmosphere like you see under Garrett. It seems the team views Garrett as their buddy, not as their leader, and you just can't have that.

sure he does. Remember dude that rushed for 200 yards and 4 tds? He missed the next meeting and was cut immediately.
