Dam, this is not good...……….I knew all the talk of a "stinger" was BS, you dont miss this many games if just a stinger. Now it makes sense.

Other athletes have had to retire because of this, especially if he takes another shot to the neck. He is also risking an injury to his spinal cord because there is less protection for the spinal cord after the surgery. If he took a vicious shot to the neck again, he could have permanent paralysis.

Dude needs to hang up the cleats and retire, its not worth the risk. This is just a game, its not worth potentially being paralyzed for the rest of your life. And as others have pointed out, if the team knew of this condition before the draft and still drafted him anyways, that was being incompetent. A player with this condition, especially at LB, is not going to have a long career.

He played good in like 2 games. Where was he when Dalvin Cook killed us? If hes not diagnosing screens he shouldnt be here. His whole game is recognition not speed or power.

When was last time we had a LBer with a pick AND a sack in the same game? Or just a pick? Yeah, he’s not the most gifted, but he’s a real player.

Let’s see what happens if we get some adequate DT’s first okay? Our DT’s have been a joke since Ratliff and Hatcher left.

Good point...……....our DTs are trash, that is why our LBs are constantly getting blocked at the second level.

Hopefully the new head coach will have a DC that actually thinks DTs are important, not like the crypt keeper we have now.

It’s true every great LB in history has had good DT’s in front of him. Heck even watch the Seahawks this year Wagner has been struggling because the Seahawks DT’s have been bad! I go back to Urlancher and Lewis I’m not saying LVE is that good. But they were allowed to run freely and make plays.

"NFL teams were aware Vander Esch had the condition before the 2018 draft when the Cowboys selected the Boise State standout with the 19th overall pick.

He plays with a neck collar to help protect the area.

"From what the doctors say, I was born with stenosis," Vander Esch said following Sunday's 17-9 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. "So it's something you've got to deal with. Nothing was bothering me until I got hit in Week 7. I've got a new set of pads being built, and I've been running and practicing in those. So it feels good. ... We were just saving up for playoffs hopefully, but it's out of my control."

Damn it. I had a feeling this was the diagnosis.

Drafting these injured players is another reason why this team has not went to the Super Bowl.

It’s time to hire a real GM and Head Coach.

Also, a talented and healthy linebacker needs to be drafted next year.

Ughhhh.....I don’t feel so good about this now. That’s risky waters playing football with his condition. He’s already gotten hurt. I have to say...Jerry needs to think about this, what’s in Leightons best interests. I’d like to know the risk % we’re dealing with here. ...as the word spinal anything scares the crap out of me.

It sucks. I was diagnosed with this exact thing around the same time as LVE. My symptoms are electric shocks/numbness in the hands, a feeling like Simone stuck a fork in my shoulder blade, and partial numbness in my right leg.

Yeah, I hear its pretty bad...………...I have a cousin with the same condition, except most of his pain is in his back. They call it the shopping cart effect, where you are bent over like you are pushing a shopping cart at HEB.

For those that dont know this condition, think of it as a hose and inside are all the nerves. Now kink the hose and that is what this condition is, it is a narrowing of the spinal column that cause a "kink" where the nerves are then bunched together. This pinches the nerves and causes all sorts of problems all over your body.

The surgery, as I understand it, removes some of the bone in the spine to in effect "widen the kink" and lower the pinching pressure on the nerves. The problem is that when you widen the kink by removing the bone in that area, the spinal cord is less protected now and any impact or blunt force to that now less protected area could potentially damage the spinal cord resulting in paralysis.

More or less, which makes me wonder if they are going to do a neck fusion plus remove the offending disc. But that can’t be helpful for his future ability to play pro football.

Sorry but you just can’t risk the spine.

I just dont see how a person could play LB in the NFL with this condition. You really need to avoid putting any pressure or stress on the neck and that is virtually impossible playing LB.

Honestly, he should seriously consider not playing football.

Yeah, I dont think he could play LB with a fused neck.

Man, this sucks....………...He is such a great player but just doesn't have the body to play in the NFL. a lot like Sean Lee.

While it is just a game, it's a game that pays out a ton of money and sets you up for life for those years of service. People will do a lot of risks if they know that much money is involved. It's hard to say what you would do in that situation. This is not a rec league or beer league where of course you would not risk it.

Yeah I’m pretty much limited in doing heavy impact activities. My situation is obviously different as I’m older than him by about 14 years and I’m not exactly rushing to get the neck fusion the neurosurgeon said I could get, but still.

Agree. It is just not worth it. Maybe it is just me but anything that could make be paralyzed I would stop doing.

Good point...…….with possibly millions at stake, he may feel the risk is warranted.
