Just some of my thoughts on the "top names";

Meyer - Has proven he can win in multiple settings and prefers the offensive style the NFL is gravitating toward (closer to college style). He has coached on both sides of the ball and his reputation (that I have heard) is picking solid coordinators and empowering them. Having been deeply involved in the college football scene, he would be a huge asset in draft talent evaluation for the next two...maybe three...drafts. That is something the Cowboys need in "filling out" the roster and finding hidden gems.

Rhule - Has proven he can win without superior talent. Face it, he isn't getting the 5 stars at Baylor or anywhere else he has coached. That tells me he wins with coaching up his talent and scheme. When he goes up against a team with an obvious talent advantage at every position and in their depth, he struggles...but that won't be the case in the NFL. Same as Meyer in college talent evaluation. He is big on character...that might be something that would help in Dallas.

Riley - He as also coached both sides of the ball but is strongest on the offensive side. Knows how to adjust to, and get the most from, QBs of different style. He would need a strong and aggressive DC. Excellent coach but not necessarily an excellent recruiter across the county. Gets enough talent to dominate the conference, but consistently gets out recruited on the national scale. Might be looking to leave while the leaving is good because his QB next season will be a redshirt freshman. Same as Meyer and Rhule on talent evaluation.

Old Sean - Might be interested if the Saints win the SB and Brees hangs it up. Don't think Jerry will want to give up what would be needed to trade for him.

Roman - He would not be bringing Jackson and the receiving talent with him. His success has been with a QB that is/were better runners than Dak. Be careful here.

McDaniels - Don't trust him. If it wasn't for luck, he would have screwed the Colts. Track record for BB assistants is not good when the leave his side.

Dabo - The word is he will stay at Clemson until one job opens up...then he bolts. He is the "heir apparent" to Saban at Alabama. Beside, I don't know how his "rah rah" style would translate to the NFL.

A few users requested an official head coach speculation thread while we wait for an official announcement and/or confirmation of Garrett being fired, so here it is.

Who do you think would be the best option for the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys?

Someone who has won 3 Superbowls, who is an excellent game manager, and who can stand up to Jerry.

I can dream, can't I?

Another cosmetic change. Does nothing to change the culture.

Well, we'd have to get rid of the man upstairs for that to happen. The King of the Clowns, Jerry Jones  We all know that isn't happening.

I don't like Kubiaks, I'm not a fan of coaches that require a string defense and a Hall of Fame QB to win. However, for some reason, his name keeps popping up.

Riley could be worse then Garrett. He could be over his head coaching the Cowboys. I am not impressed with anything he has done with Oklahoma. Has he coached the Sooners to any upset victories? He just beats who he supposed to beat and then loses in the semifinals of CFP when he plays against real teams and coaches. He has coached up Murray and Baker that is about it.

I agree with everything you said but Lincoln Riley is a great play designer and playcaller and he does it using a lot of NFL concepts.

I think all of your concerns are valid but his stock may never get lower then it is right now because from a Xs and Os standpoint he is clearly brilliant.

I like the risk / reward with him.

Dam, lots of places reporting that Zimmerman might the favorite after they lose to the Saints.

Man, I dont know about that...………...he is an upgrade over Clappy, but dam near anybody is an upgrade over Clappy. Bar should be higher.

He knows defense and he loves to run the ball so I guess it would be ok, maybe.

I'm sure Dan Campbell will get some votes and he does have a working history with Joe Brady, perhaps HC, OC combo?

He’s a total status quo move that keeps the country club in tact.

This is one of the better posts I have seen. Pretty much agree with your breakdowns of each. I really think that Meyer, given the control he would demand, would be the best option for this team right now. There is still a strong talent base, with some good free agency targets the team still has a short window before they need a full rebuild. Meyer fits the bill of a short term answer. If he can't win with this group, then start over with a new coach and going the route of the Dolphins....strip it all down and let a coach build the team they want.

I don't know which guy will be selected but it will not be the route the Skins took with Rivera. He was my #1 but I was being silly, the owner of this team will never accept it is the culture of the locker room and team that is the root of the problem.

I do think the next HC will be an improvement over the present one because this has played out. Change is necessary and will be good, at least in the short term.

We can all speculate who we THINK would be the best option for our next head coach. I'm afraid, though, with all the great options, Jerry will still bring in someone that will illicit a "what the heck?" response from us fans. That's the Jerry way. I hope I'm wrong, and Jerry finally acknowledges that he will need to hire a HC that can bring in his own coordinators and have authority over the players. Don't be surprised if you see Jerry hiring Jeff Fisher. Let's pray that doesn't happen!!
OMG.

I sure hope they don't hire from within. If this happens, it might be another Garrett type era because these coaches know how to keep Jerry happy and will bow down and follow in the Clappers footsteps.

I think Roman would do well with Dak. You're right in that the other qbs he coached were better runners.

Speed wise Dak and Alex Smith are the closest comparison I could find. Of course thats 40 times and I know those are limited.

That said Dak is a powerful runner. I dont think hes ever been coached to be decisive in using his legs as a weapon. While I dont think its wise to make your starting QB vulnerable frequently you still have to coach to a players strengths.

Garrett and our staff appeared to want to turn Dak into Peyton Manning. He left a ton of first downs on the field by passing up easy running lanes. Id like to see what happens when he has the green light to run at will. Im not talking about designing a ton of run plays for Dak, but more so keeping him on the move and encouraging the run first mentality when lanes are open.

I think theres an argument to be made that Dak is at or near the top of that list as far as over all game. Roman would be a great guy to guide us towards deciding on Daks long term future. Franchise him and lets see what Roman can do.

That said I love the idea of getting a stud college coach to come in and draft well and help reinvigorate the franchise.
