You indicated it was an issue with Jerry, so I felt it was only fair to point out that it isn't unique to Jerry. I don't disagree that it would be great to have the best backup possible, but the reality is that it's rare for teams to have backups that are good enough that will allow them to feel okay letting the starter walk if negotiations get tough. For example, Ryan Fitzpatrick would be a high quality backup who can win some games if he has to start, but he wouldn't cause a team to risk losing what they feel is a quality starter, especially if the starter is younger and has a chance to help the team for several years. As for younger backups, the best odds of having one that can step in win games is if the team uses a high draft pick on a QB, and that usually only happens when a team already has a problem at the QB position, or has an aging QB that is nearing retirement.
The issue with Jerry is that he doenst want to rock the boat. Did the same thing with Aikman. Zeke and Dak he seems to be doing the same thing and its definitely costing him in negotiations.
Fitz would be a great backup. Personally, I would prefer Dak, a backup like Fitz, and a talented young backup to develop. When the young guy is good enough to resume #2, then start the process over again.
And yah, that costs money and draft capital. Too important a position to do otherwise. Can always trade the young guy ala Garrappolo if he develops or trade Dak if he wants too much or otherwise.
You keep using the term "usually" and "other teams do this or that".
Why would I care what other teams do? Im talking about what the Cowboys should do.
