The truth about Jaylon Smith's 2019 season

To be fair, isn't tackling a kind of bogus, unofficial stat because it's based on third-party tallies which the league itself doesn't really even acknowledge or confirm the accuracy of?

Or did they fix this in recent years without me noticing? Because last I heard, it was a nonsense, inaccurate fluff statistic (tallied by people the team handpicks themselves, no less, as I recall).
I think this has changed.

I know the analytics sites get paid to be accurate, they do their own counting. By their reckoning, The tackle numbers look similar to what you can find in NFL.com

100% he should be given that chance, but he WAS terrible last year despite the awful attempt to state otherwise by the OP
How do you define terrible? He was better than Lee or LVE.

The entire LB crew was down after a good year in 2018, but I’d really be interested to know why he was terrible

The stats and his durability would say he was average, at worst.

meanwhile the Wolf Hunter gets a free pass from many. Not saying he was terrible either, but there’s definitely some double standard at work on this board when it comes to the two of them, particularly when it comes to them both trying to sell their brands but only one gets hate

This is TACKLE football, not flag football big guy. If you think tackling is a worse stat - you're out of your damn mind.
If you think total tackles is a good stat to judge player off, you are out of your damn mind. Lol

There are some extremely stupid people that post here. It never ceases to amaze me. More and more are showing up every day.

This is the type of stuff that needs to leave the board. Have an opinion and leave it at that. You’re not the smartest guy in the room. Right after this you made 2-3 more inflammatory statements. You love Jaylon, others think he needs work. Truth is usually in between. These statements help no one

So there's some threads and posts floating around that are flat out ludacris. A guy just posted that Jaylon is an embarrassment to the organization so I feel compelled to offer you this:

Player A: 144 tackles (81 solo), 0 sacks. 2 ints

Player B: 142 tackles (83 solo), 2.5 sacks, 1 ints

Player A is Luke Kuechly
Player B is Jaylon Smith

Jaylon had the 6th most tackles in the entire NFL (3 solo tackles behind league leader Bobby Wagner; largely regarded as the best LB in the NFL). Jaylon also had .5 less sacks and the same number of INTs as Wagner.

To say Jaylon is an embarrassment to this organization is an embarrassing thing to say - the guy isn't even in his prime yet and had to deal with idiots like Robert Quinn not being able to stop the run or screens to save his damn life (the guy had 26 solo tackles in 2019). Quinn was sack hunting the whole season so he could get a big contract & it compromised this whole defense (especially the LBs - in my opinion). I get some of you are in love with Quinn because sacks (the most overrated thing in all of football) make people fall in love with players. If I'm the Cowboys I couldn't get rid of Quinn fast enough & this Jaylon Smith slander needs to stop - it's ridiculous.

Jaylon is an embarassment in the way he behaves on the field. Its not even debatable. Yeah he makes a lot of tackles but he makes very few plays that impact the game. He is the ultimate garbage time stat collector. Worst contract Jerry has given out in a long time.

The truth is Jaylon needs to be aware that it's not cool to celebrate after finally making one play when the defense has been getting mopped up and down the field for 3 quarters and a half.

Stats don't tell the whole story, just a tool to help paint the picture of what happened.

Every player needs work. Every poster needs educated. Including you and me. I respond the habitual haters only. Are you one of those?

Smith gets more tackles when Wolfhunt plays bc they run away from LVE.

And less when lee plays because they run to lee.

Need a healthy LVE to see full jaylon.

i agree! I’m here to hear opinions. I’m not a cap or draft guru so people help here on things I’m ignorant on. I’m also not a hater. Jaylon made a lot of plays but also wasn’t great in coverage and had a lack of self awareness on the field. Hope a new scheme to his strengths helps even more. Point being you are calling anyone not agreeing idiots. Just saying. I like a lot of your posts. Just thought those were extreme. Cheers

It is tackle football and you can't get a sack without tackling the quarterback.

Personally, I'd rather have a concussed Luke Kuechly than Jaylon at MLB.
Smith played out of position much of the year due to LVE's injury.

But if Tackles is the Stat people want to use for comparsion,
I pose this question.

How many tackles were made on 3rd/4th down that resulted in the
Defense getting off the field?

Every player has bad games, makes bad plays and needs to improve. I get tired of those who just focus on the negatives ignoring the positives. There’s ton of them here.

He was one of my favorite picks in a long time.
I've been done with him since half way through last season. I will not support him as a football player any longer.
Most of the starting caliber players on both sides of the ball deserve an opportunity to showcase their ability for our new coaching regime. You're correct about Jalen's productivity on the field though, he has terrible fundamentals for a starting NFL linebacker.

A lot of Jaylon pushback is from late season when he was getting beat on coverage and celebrating in losses and over hurt guys. Some games he came across as clueless to his situation snd surroundings. It was a bad look. I put a lot of what issues he did have on scheme. His game is speed and attacking, not waiting

He plays like a guy that does very little prep. Clueless even. Smith is a physically gifted clown.

Stop it. He gave Romo 100 million with a bad back. Cant' be the worst contract ever given.

Dude doesnt care win or lose. He constantly gave up and didnt try on a lot of plays. Doing celebrations when the game is already over is embarrassing.
