This is a low-risk signing though - not much money, no long-term commitment, kick the tires, take it out for a test drive and if you don't like it, you can leave.

It also provides a more flexibility in the draft to keep other teams guessing.

On March 3, Smith was accused of a domestic violence incident in which he threw his fiancée “around the room, bit her on the wrist and climbed out the window,” according to a police dispatch call via KTVU in San Francisco. The Raiders released him shortly after. Smith turned himself into police on charges of willful infliction of corporal injury, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, false imprisonment and vandalism (less than $400).

False imprisonment? Assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury. And all this happened two years ago. It’s just mind boggling to me if the NFL reinstates this guy with this kind of domestic violence history.

Is it fair to omit the fact that he was under the influence of alcohol to the point that he blew a 4.0?

It seems like the go to response when a football player not playing for the Cowboys gets into trouble is "well, if it were Zeke he would be suspended. Why hasn't Goodell suspended him already?"
Agreed, but it's valid. ASmith wasn't even around when Zeke got suspended, but no one still knows the exact reasoning. And especially when, as I already said in this thread, Tyreek playing with zero suspension and more proof to his serious transgressions (and history of the same) than Zeke just being young and silly.

Alcohol changes people. I'd like to see how he is sober.

I know people who were alcoholics and meth addicts, and they all say alcohol was harder to give up.

Jerry has a major need to show everybody in the NFL that he's a better judge of people than anybody else, the "I know X can play, be a Pro Bowler, has turned his life around, etc. etc. etc."

He traded for Haley, took Hardy and so forth despite just about everybody saying he shouldn't. That's just Jerry.
He's trying desperately to "do it again", since only the Haley gamble worked out substantially well, guess he figures if he does it enough lightning will strike twice...

0.4 is immediate risk of alcohol poisoning levels. This dude is fortunate to be alive.

The only thing I'd add to your take is the difference there is, JJ had Jimmy who was the one who traded for Haley. Jerry will forever try to prove he can be successful without Jimmy. How long has it been now? And don't count 1997 cause that was essentially Jimmy's team playing w/o him and puppet coach installed.

First of all, I’m all for everyone in society getting second chances. People suffering from drug and alcohol addictions who make serious attempts to get sober deserve our support. But people with domestic violence problems are different, especially when it comes to putting them on a national stage like the NFL. Domestic Violence perpetrators need help, but they don’t need a roster spot.

Yahoo Sports ran an article last night on Aldon Smith’s incredibly long rap sheet. Below is an excerpt from that article:

Aldon Smith’s mountain of legal issues

Here’s a rundown of the long list of off-field issues Smith has encountered since entering the NFL:
This list makes Greg Hardy look like a choir boy.
As I said in the beginning of this post- second chances are good. But for domestic violence? I want the Cowboys to win as bad as anyone. But not without at least some level of respectability.

Here’s the link to the article I quoted:

I blame rap music; lol.

Greg Hardy beat the stuff out of that girl, was arrested for felony drug possession (cocaine), and had an arsenal of illegal weapons. Smith struggled to stay sober.

Hardy is legit a bad person. Smith struggled with alcoholism. So, no, he doesn't make Hardy look like anything.
I was thinking the same thing.

Sounds to me as if he and his GF got drunk and had a fight. Not acceptable, but not just domestic violence for the sake of violence as it appears Hardy's was.

Yes he is. And it clearly show that he was out of his mind at that point of his life.

The clear pattern with hims has been alcohol. If as is being reported, he has stopped drinking and changed his life, that one factor is no longer present. If things stay that way, it's reasonable to believe that he can get his life back in order.

That really is reasonable to believe. What may be harder to believe is that he can still be effective after missing 4 seasons. The risk/reward is favorable to the Cowboys though, so I'm okay taking a shot on him.

That's exactly where I'm at too.

One thing that encourages me. His success was never based on fantastic measurables. Never the biggest, fastest, strongest type of player. But a guy who succeeded based on motivation, drive, hustle, a quick first step, and great hand usage. To me, those are all factors that do not noticeably depreciate with age as the others I mentioned do, or at least not as quickly or as noticeably. Again, that's my opinion anyway. But I'll just wait and see what happens between now and the season starting. I admit that it's also possible that he never suits up for the Cowboys.

If the Cowboys think that this signing, as well as a potential return of Randy Gregory, crosses DE off the list of positions to be upgraded, then they haven't learned a thing.

If it's a no risk signing to see if you catch lightning in a bottle, but buttress it with investment in a guy like K'Lavin Chaisson or an edge guy like Zack Baun, then I kind of get it.

Smith is a train wreck as a human being. His issues do seem to be substance abuse/alcohol based, but domestic violence for me is an in-the-box offense. I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole, but it's too late at this point.
