There was an era where the players had off season jobs. Staubach worked for a real estate company.

There was some offensive lineman back in the late fifties who bartended in his off season. The purpose of training camp was to get these lard butts back into shape. But that was back in the day when these guys did more working the fork than the gym.

But, if this season suggested anything, this team needs to work hard on the skills that make football successful. Tackling might be a primary skill set for defense.

We are in a different time. And these players are essentially a going concern individually. They are in business of their career. So being in shape MIGHT be less critical. But that does not preclude fundamentals.

I don't believe they are soft. I think they are pampered. Especially in Jerry World.

The NFL is adding an extra game next season so something has to give.

Gee, players want less wear and tear to prolong careers. How selfish
And on the flip side, people *****ed about camp cupcake, and how soft the team was because they didn't hit much, now you add no off season workouts for all teams and it's gonna be disastrous..imo it's will be a big mistake.

I strongly believe eliminating offseason practices and/or conditioning would be a foolhardy decision. Far too many players show up to training camp woefully unprepared for the rigors of training camp. The players most definitely must avoid foolishly neglecting their offseason preparations for their conditioning. That's just an invitation for needless injuries to happen. The NFLPA has been far too anxious to eliminate preparations for physical conditioning in the past. Players in the modern era have become far too willing to eliminate a proper workout regimen.

The players are just fooling themselves if they think avoiding their training regimen will lengthen their careers. The injuries that occur due to a lack of conditioning increases injuries to the point of shortening their careers, not adding to them. Their just allowing laziness to mislead them.

not sure if this is a good or a bad thing... I think it’s good for teams to get the extra prep work in.

Whatever. As long as it's an even playing field, it doesn't really matter to me what the players believe will help them to stay healthier. If it has the opposite effect, they can always try something different.

If it results in sloppy play, at least it will be sloppy play for everyone (well, except those players who are diligent about doing their own prep).

Seriously? These idiots haven't figured out that injuries have skyrocketed since they have gone to the "never any contact in practices" motif? Running into other large men and being slammed to the ground is not something that comes naturally. Like it or not, the body needs time to get ready to play football. And the only way to prepare the body for playing football is to play football. Let's hope the owners are not stupid enough to cave to this. The quality of play has already slipped to the point that many games are unwatchable .. We can't really afford any further slippage.

At some point the poor quality of play is going to start costing them money.
