The Argument For Drafting a QB With the 10 Pick

again, your approach makes no sense. 12M ain't going to fix this defense. and why would you want an average QB. if your opinion is he is average, then he is not the QB we want at 28M. we want a top 10 QB (which in my opinion he is). so if he is average as you say, then why not go bargain basement and have 35M to go after some defensive difference makers, because 12M at best gets you a good defensive player, not great. or a couple of mid level players and you end up with an average QB and average defense....

you have to realize I am trying to help you make your case. either go bargain basement shopping. or draft. or you go elite. in the middle, you end up in the middle.

with that said, what makes you say he is average, since all stats point to him being above average and in the top 10.
You are right and I am on the record in so many chats saying trade Dak or let him walk and get better QB . But I am realistic , Jerry won’t let players he drafted go . It is a pride thing. I was hoping he could at least convince Dak to take less . As usual he caved as I expected.
If it was my choice I would let Dak go and roll with Gilbert / dalton and draft a new QB later . For now , fox the defense .

ok, if you say we should have traded then that's fine. My opinion was to keep him. that's fine....taking a few million less ain't making a difference in this team until we fix our defensive drafting.

Dalton and Gilbert would spell a 4-12 season. then if that was the case you wanted, as I said in many other posts, then we should have just dumped everyone and start from scratch. that includes Lawrence, Zeke, Tyron, Martin, etc. and get as many draft picks as possible and go rebuild.

Why do you believe dalton or Gilbert or a quality QB spells 4-12 ? Dak started last year 1-4 or 2-4 if you want to give him the giants game win ( which dalton finished ) ? Did you see him lose to the rams ( even when the Cowboys rushed well ) and lose big to the browns and should have lost to the falcons . I am hoping he shows up and makes a good playoff run , but am worried the defense has not acquired enough talent. It may come down to Quinn fixing the defense with his coaching. Jerry has not helped him via FA yet . And that is the main problem .

yeah, we would hate to find a better quarterback and have to put the million-dollar man on the bench.

ok, that first sentence was an oxymoron. Dalton or Gilbert are not quality QBs...that was the whole point. Dalton proved clearly he can't beat average teams and his wins came against 4 win teams, with their back up QBs and a lot of help from defense (9 turnovers, one score) and he could barely accomplish those....so how often do we expect to play 4 win teams during a season and how often do we get lucky and the opposing team has their back up QB (their offense is hampered)....suffice it to say that was an exception. so yes, Dalton would spell 4-12. given in his other games he had 1 win and got the team blown out routinely.

Playing devil's advocate, okay?

Please no insults and no references to my intelligence or lack thereof.....Nah, never mind!...Asking for mercy is just pouring gasoline on a fire.

Three times in the past 11 seasons the starting QB went down early in the season and it was all over, crash and burn. It would have been four seasons but a fourth round draft choice miraculously had one of the best rookie seasons in history, who expected that?

The Cowboys rolled out a slew of backups, mostly average quarterbacks when they were in their prime. Sometimes they were on one year contracts meaning that, even if they had a good showing, they were gone the following season.

Why not kill two birds with one stone? Draft a top tier QB, if the starter goes down, the rookie gets experience. He could be a legitimate starter the following season in which case the Cowboys trade one of them. Furthermore, when a player gets paid they seem to have the tendency to play soft that season. A legitimate talent backing him up could put a little fire to Dak's backside.

The rookie salary cap allows the Cowboys to draft a QB in the top ten, I think.

You could draft a productive non-QB player in the top ten but what difference would that make if Dak is injured again or if he performs poorly? Look at the value of good young quarterbacks these days. If the Cowboys cultivate a young QB while he serves as a quality backup, the Cowboys could end up with a trade reaping great value for their future.

Look at the history of the Cowboys successful seasons. Where there not two legitimate starters?....Lebaron/Meredith...Staubach/Morton....Staubach/White....Even Roger Staubach once revealed that a reason for his success was how hard he competed with Danny White, knowing how good his competition was. Jimmy Johnson drafted two QB's #1 overall in his first season, giving up the #1 overall pick in 1990 for taking Steve Walsh in the supplemental draft. Jimmy valued competition.

Ok....let 'er rip!
There is no legit argument for using a top 10 pick on a QB the first year of your QB’s contract

Your right. This is probably the only place where that option is being discussed.....right?

It's either because this forum is hardcore and refuses to ignore even the smallest possible scenarios........or I'm so bored that I've deviated to outrageous scenarios just for something to talk about.

Speaking of which....why are offseasons so freakin' long?!

They should switch to 32 games a year, two "mini" seasons a year and 70 player teams with no player allowed to play in more than 18 games a season.

With 32 games, 2 byes, 4 rounds of playoffs for each season that is 42 weeks. The draft takes care of one weak, the Pro Bowl should be revised, that leaves 6 weeks for training camp with two weeks left over for player vacations.

Another better idea.......

A team that drafts a QB with their best capital is subtracting that capital from the current title chances thus insulting not only the QB but the team as a whole.

It caused some consternation in GB when they did it and we all laughed in Dallas when the Eagles used an R2 on QB.

It's just not a realistic option.

If a QB is there and NE or someone wants to trade up that's the way to maximize that return day 1.

Dalton won more games than that while playing with a terrible defense and an OL that was starting guys off the street. Starting over from scratch would not have been a bad ideal. Tyron is at the end of his career and Martin was the only player with a big contract that was worth it.

context matters and that's what you are omitting. first 5 games we played 4 playoff teams. Dalton lost to average teams. he lost bad. very bad. he gave the team ZERO chance. Ravens, WFT, AZ....he did beat 3 teams that had 4 wins (in the end) and some had 2 wins when we played them. all had their back up QBs when we played them and he still needed 9 turnovers and a defensive TD to get it done. In a must win game, against a 5 win team, he choked once again....and what stood out to me about Dalton, a 10+ year veteran was the last pass he threw in that game, an ill advised dumb pass that was intercepted and not give the offense one more chance at the end zone in a must win game....he showed no situational football awareness what so ever....that was utterly stupid. stupid, stupid. that was utterly Dalton and how his career was. even in that game the defense gave him two turnovers and he still couldn't get it done....Perhaps if Jones was injured and they had their back up, it might have been different

the difference in the OL was pretty much smith available for 1.5 games. in fact by the time Dalton got to the end of the season those back ups had a lot of experience and were playing much better, so he greatly benefited. the defense was HISTORICALLY bad in the first 5 games to the tune of giving up 37+ pts per game...

and the defense was terrible all along, but played much better towards the end. 9 turnovers and a TD in 3 games. 11 in the last 4 games.

I'm tired of realistic options. I want us to try something risky and out of the box at this position.

Well he gets rid of them when they are rock bottom or he has new favorite personal picks . The Dak decision was painful as he thought he could prevail upon Dak with his fatherly charm and pay him 25-30 mil , then he has to up it to 35 then 41 .

Don’t you think there were cheaper and much better alternatives to Dak ?

what about Tom Brady who was available at 26 mil ?
What about wilson who wanted out and would have been cheaper and better , or simply sticking wirh dalton and Gilbert and fix the defense and get a QB from the draft by trading Dak for a top 5 pick . There are options and the defense should have been where the big money is spent . Not a mediocre to good injured QB who is paid top money in the nfl .

you are clueless if you think TB12 was coming here, he chose TB because he saw a defense and a offensive weapon list in warm climate that could extend his career. Thats pipe dream lets move ion form that thought process..it wasnt an option, period..TB was his target and that where he went brought the Calvary with him and a SB says he made the correct decsions. They were a QB and few pieces away, we were not..

LOL...you think Tom Brady would come to Dallas? you seriously think Brady would come here!? why? what makes you think he would have chosen to come to a team, a first year head coach and a first year OC (has brady played more season than Moore's age?) and a meddling Owner...really!? your think Brady would come here...he chose Tampa, a 7-9 team, with a top notch defense, stacked talent on offense, a good head coach having had a QB that threw 30+ interceptions.....cut that in half and that's an 11-5 team.

just too funny.

Wilson would have cost two arms, two legs, part of your intestine, half of your liver, one eye to get to dallas...then you have no draft picks and a craappy defense and only $7M to fix the defense....doesn't that look just like Seattle? where wilson btw, is 1-3 in playoffs in the past 5 years...go figure

Dalton :lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao2::lmao2::lmao2::lmao2::lmao2::lmao2::lmao2::lmao2::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

How do you fix the defense? which FA would be available to fix the defense and how much money did they want? would you have been able to build an all time best defense with those FA (why were they in the market in the first place if they are any good?), you need a defense to compensate for the Grand Canyon size drop in QB play with red ball (didn't we already experiment with red heads and moved on already?)

you are very funny kid.....living in a fantasy world.

No. You had one of the worst defense in Cowboys history. QB is not a need at the 10th overall pick in the draft. Cowboy needs are RDE, CB, DT, LB, LDE, OT/OG, TE, QB, FB, and WR/KR.

The Dallas Cowboys angels gifted you Dak Prescott to replace Tony Romo. You can get a great developmental QB and quality back up in rounds 3-4 in this draft. That is were you found Prescott. I agree with your competition point and that is why I did not like the way they managed Romo without QB competition. You always want to keep QBs for depth and value to trade (see Morton, and Walsh). But this draft should be approached like the 2005 Dallas Cowboys draft....defense, defense, defense and more defense.
