Why Do New Draft Picks Say We Are a Marquee Franchise?

We have advanced past the first round in the playoffs three times in 25 years so why do new draft picks act so excited to go to a losing franchise with 25 years of playoff irrelevancy? It’s like being drafted by the Lions or Bengals except we have five super bowl wins a quarter of a century ago.

We are not winners but are marketing champs!
Quite right, then?

Valued at $5.7 billion, the Cowboys rank ahead of all other sports franchises in the world. Next up on the list include the New York Yankees ($5.25 billion), New York Knicks ($5 billion), Barcelona Soccer ($4.76 billion), Real Madrid Soccer ($4.75 billion)
This is why I love this forum, its like a slap in the face wake up call when you read posts like this that wake you up...
Had no idea, zero, zilch, nada, no idea at all that soccer inspired that kind of revenue...
Thank you @waving monkey for educating me with this post.

We’re all paying fans either directly or indirectly .

Directly, I pay nothing. Indirectly, I may pay a little when I buy the products of companies that advertise during the games. The only companies I can think of which possibly advertise are Geico, Honda, and T-mobile. On a rare occasion, I would buy som Frito Lays products. Most of the stuff I buy, those companies don’t advertise during football games.

Assuming you watch any of the games In the NFL you are indirectly supporting every team including the Cowboys.

Because we are the Fast and Furious of the NFL. We suck, but constantly make money and everyone watches.
That has to be one of the most accurate descriptions of the Cowboys since the early 2000's. Sure, they have not been very good, but they are the most valuable franchise not only in the NFL, but in the world. Then the Cowboys are usually in half, or more, of the most viewed games during the NFL season, and are the only team to do so year in and year out.

As a player, if you want to get paid and have your name seen and recognized, not many, if any, sport franchises are better at doing so.

You have to give him credit for the 13 and 3 seasons as well as the mediocre seasons.
13-3 in years Dallas had easy schedules.

Dallas is "marquee" because young players know them as the team that was always on TV and failed when they were kids.

Oh boy. Great.

I only watch the Cowboys games and catch the highlights of other games on the internet on tape for free. I only watch the Cowboy games on the internet after the game is played. I don't watch live football for the most part.

I am pretty sure the NFL gets little money from me indirectly. Probably around $25/year from companies whose products I buy which advertise during a game and Comcast. I have a package with Comcast but haven't turned the tv on in months. I will switch to all internet on Monday.

Doing my part to keep the prices down.

Whatever. Any fan who doesn’t watch live football isn’t a fan I’m interested in. Why even bother. You must not enjoy the experience or atmosphere.

I'm not interested in the emotional rollercoaster of live games. I prefer to study the game on tape without emotions. I can roll the tape slowly and watch the play develop and focus in on certain individuals on certain plays. I also enjoy the decision-making that goes into the building of a team and the gameplans and strategies.

Engineering mind which would rather focus on data and observation without emotional bias. I prefer to get my emotional kicks elsewhere rather than watching a football game of which I have no part.

No, I don't enjoy the gameday atmosphere or experience at a stadium. Watching on tv is much better to me. Watching tape is a much better experience for me and a better way to study the team and players.

I participated in many sports. Baseball, basketball, football, tennis, and racquetball. I prefer not to get emotional over a game played by people I do not know personally. Just a fan and student of the game of football and the Cowboys as a team.

But the game is played with emotion. It’s all part of the competitive nature. If you take that out of the equation you might as well be watching chess. Lol

Of course you know the players as you’ve watched and followed them for years. Much like the emotion attached to watching a tv show or a film with actors or characters you’ve followed.

Football and all competitive physical sports are imbedded with emotion being played as well as cheered for by their fans. It’s not a science we study. It’s a game. And without emotion there’s no passion for the game and sport.

SMH

apparently its not like getting picked by the lions or bengals..that star means something its history we have multiple dynasty's and the media and how the league places are schedule says regardless of lack of post season success, its still a marquee franchise..

the yankees will never not be the yankees even if they have bad run...

other big named sports franchises all the same once you have the maqruee name ie the moniker "Americas Team" YOU DO NOT LOSE IT

IF YOU THINK THAT, WHY ARE YOU HERE, WHY STILL a FAN, WHY THE PISSING AND MOANING AROUND HERE ABOUT 25 YEARS AND YET THEY ARE LIVING, EATING, AND BREATHING THE DC ??

Dallas IS a marquee team. Regardless of record over the last 25 years. We are still the most popular football team in the world. We sell the most merchandise, are the biggest draw on TV, and team's attendance swells when we come to town. The most loved and the most hated. Players know that being drafted by the Cowboys means they will have the best chance for television exposure, which leads to marketing opportunities. Guys like Marcus Spears have turned being a Cowboys player into another career. Nobody cared a lick about Marcus Spears but he got the exposure he needed. Regardless of our record, Dallas is year in and year out one of the most seen teams in the world. That sticks with people.

If you’re going to complain at least get your facts correct in the initial post. “We have advanced past the first round only three times in 25 years” is a flat out lie. Surprised nobody checked you on that. The fact that you even thought that was true makes me question if you actually are a cowboys fan or just a troll from another team.

wow when I said fans only care about the bottom line (I.e., deep playoff runs), I never accounted for the causal Cowboys fan who is wowed and dazzled by most profitable, biggest stadium, and most prime time games kind of fan. I’d rather have a deep playoff run and limited prime time games but I only care about the Cowboys winning. Well, we’re all fans here so to each his own.
He didn't say that's all he cared about, but you asked about the Cowboys relevance in the NFL, and being a profitable franchise and helping the NFL be profitable makes them relevant. Acknowledging that doesn't mean a person doesn't care about winning, it just means they recognize the NFL is a business and as such economics are relevant.

It's like you asking about the Cowboys being referred to as a marquee team. "Marquee" isn't limited to wins and losses, it is more about what gets noticed - what's popular and gets media and fan attention. The Cowboys fit those things.

If you want only to talk about wins and losses, frame your comments and questions that way. When talking about "relevance" and being a "marquee team" there is more in the mix than wins and losses alone.
