Emmitt Smith’s all-time rushing record withstands another challenger as Frank Gore retires

True Dallas Cowboy records last forever. Tom Landry consecutive seasons without a losing record, Cowboys most consecutive winning seasons, Tony Dorsett 99 yard run, Emmitt Smith rushing record, Doomsday defense most turnovers by opposing team by Doomsday I, II, and III, etc.

So the past is all you have now.

With the passing game the way it is that record may never be broken. Plus a lot of teams use two backs.

Adrian Peterson is roughly 3400 behind Emmitt. He has yet to retire. But he does not have enough left in the tank to challenge the record. He is #5 all time.

Next in line is Ingram #54 with 7878 yards then Zeke #58 with 7386 yards for active players. #54 and #58 on the all time list.
Then Henry at #71 with 6797 yards, Henry in is first year played behind Murray most of the year, or at least half.
Zeke and Henry have 6 years in the NFL. What are the chances with their running styles. Each plays another 6 years.

Henry didn't carry the pigskin early or even start in his career as he does now, as former Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray started over him until Titans felt it was Ole Henry time.
Ah, gotcha. I started paying more attention to him when he ran all over the Patriots in Brady's final playoff game.

Barry would’ve passed Emmitt if he played two more seasons, and sooner if you don’t count the few years Emmitt stuck around to pad his resume. And that was behind a terrible OL compared to the GOAT OL.

I can't see it being broken with the current advantages offenses have passing the ball, generally short lifespan of RBs/the rare chance of a generational RB coming into the league and lasting into their mid to late 30's and the current disadvantages teams have paying RBs long term.

Defenses are going to continue to draft lighter players and thats when smashmouth football will return.

Imo Adrian Peterson could have legitimately broke it but he lost two seasons entirely from acl tears and then he had the issue with his kid.

Frank Gore is probably the more mysterious NFL careers i've ever seen.

What has to be the most "quiet " non-splashy career ever as his career numbers are vastly overlooked and i believe if the question was asked around, his name would
never come up as recognized as one of the all time great RBs' in the NFL; such as Sanders, Emmitt, Dickerson, Faulk, Bettis, Campbell, Thomlinson. Thurman, Allen, Payton, Dorsett, Harris, etc.
and he wasn't a guy that was in the trade rumors,.. just left and came as FA here and there ..

Never seemed like the NFL network hero of the week or the year. ..

i just did not see the amount of interviews and documentaries on Frank Gore as i have even with the likes of Bo Jackson, Christian-Nigerian nightmare- Okoye, Chris Johnson, Natron Means, etc.

Did he ever lead the league in rushing yards or all purpose yards ?

I remember when him and Bush were playing in College Tourneys, both small backs, but Gore was almost knocked out of his career early with that college injury. If you had asked me back then which one would have the most yards, definitely would’ve put my money on Bush, and wouldn’t have put my money on any of them lasting this long. Truly a remarkable feat from Gore but yes a much more remarkable feat from #22, I don’t think anyone will ever pass Emmitt, especially because the running game just isn’t the same anymore.

That’s sort of the point. LOL Emmitt never had a major injury that took him out long back when he was running the most and was the focal point of all defenses.

Had not Barry Sanders not shockingly "retired" from the miserable perennial Detroit Lions when he was still on an MVP level, ..even Emmitt with that Great Wall of Dallas, ..would not
have had a chance of catching Sanders.
And Barry always had a so-so OL ..at best, that's just how utter phenomenal he was as a pure runner.

i've always long thought both Sanders and Calvin " Megatron" Johnson should have demanded a trade and force their way out of Detroit to salvage their careers, rather than rot their
remaining careers on a forever hapless losers like Detroit.

Yup, durability with a little luck is key. Peterson was also the focal point of defenses with 7-8 stacked in the box and still dominated. Not taking anything away from Smith but had Peterson stayed healthy he had the talent to break it.
