Looks like it'll be Church and Wilcox starting at safety unless we take HaHa or Pryor in the draft

no, i just looked him up after you mentioned him and a few sites had him at 6-7th round projections. didn't see many putting him that high. then again, bleacher report does, but i'm not much of a fan of them. i'll keep digging.

His game tape speaks for itself, the dude can cover. It'd be nice to have a safety that we can drop in the slot.

I just hope they aren't locked into safety in round 1. Haha and Pryor are going to be nowhere bpa in my opinion

It is good when they try to develop these young players, but they need some starting quality talent on the field while these young guys learn. As it stands, there is not much talent at all at the safety position. The best hope they have is for a small school, mid-round draft pick to actually become a starting quality player. This situation is based on hope. They are hoping they get lucky and somebody develops. In the meantime, a JAG would be an upgrade from what they are trotting out there to start. It is a high risk gamble that hasn't payed off at the safety position, and they are rolling the dice again. Safety is an ongoing problem for another year.

Yes, Safety and backup OG are bigger issues than DL at this point.

I can't really judge the Safeties based on last season due them being surrounded by chaos on the roster. I can't expect a rookie Safety to have any chance to be good when the surrounding veterans like Carter and Claiborne don't always execute their assignments properly and the pass rush is erratic, then later Lee is out of the lineup and they have another rookie in front of them. They also had a SLB playing that was a DE in training camp.

Now, either Wilcox steps up and meets expectations. He demonstrated terrific coverage abilities in the drills against WRs at the Senior Bowl practices last year. He was better against WRs than some of the CBs. His tackling was very good in the games that he played in 2013. Now he must learn the scheme and show that he can consistently execute his assignments.

The other option is that Matt Johnson stays healthy. They seem convinced that he can be an good NFL Safety is he is on the field.

My only issue with a stopgap veteran, is that if he plays, then they get to the end of the year and still don't know if the young guys can play or not.

They've done the same thing at RT where Parnell showed excellent potential in 2012, but didn't play enough to really know if he could replace Free or not. I believe that if Free had gotten injured last season, that Parnell would have come in and been decent but inconsistent for a few games but by the end of the season he would have progressed to the point that there would be no question that he was better than Free.

If they bring in a stopgap Safety in this "building" year, then they will still be 8-8 at best and next off-season they will still not know if the young guys can play. I would prefer that they just let give enough playing time to all of the existing young players and the top 3 or 4 draft picks such that by next off-season they have a roster that has reasonable players for the future and they just need to go get a couple of key players to have a realistic possibility of a top 5 defense in 2015.

Yes, I'm sure that everyone is tired of 8-8; however, even if they go 8-8 in 2014, it's a much different situation than 8-8 in 2011. In 2011 the future didn't look good with too many older players and players with huge contracts. Now they have a very young roster with only Romo and Witten over 30 (I think Free is exactly 30) and their cap situation in 2015 will be better than it has been since Garrett became the Head Coach.
