That is a lot of what they do now. They and other media outlets have pretty much fired all of their journalists in favor of cheap kids that can scour the Internet and radio for content to post on their website

Meanwhile those journalists from the good ole days are having to pack up their typewriters.

Hard to type columns with one finger at a time, meanwhile some milenial just copies and pastes endless free content from aggregation sites like Reddit.

Seems that online publications are still using the tactic of banning everything. They should just kill the website and make you buy the actual paper. They are trying to have their cake and eat it too.

I think they are going for subscription service only. Otherwise this is absolutely stupid. Of course they could be that dumb.
did you ever pay for a newspaper? quarter a day? $1 on sundays for the comics section alone?

the revenue choices for media these days slim and still advertising based. subscription services are going to be hit and miss but the question is would enough do it to at least be a viable alternative source of income vs. "click here now - see amazing stuff!" and other click bait headlines. then you lob in a comments section to a site that leans one way or another and you get it filled up with jr high chest beating comments and insult parties.

ka-ching ka-ching. we support that by clicking on stupid headlines and telling them how stupid they are as they be stupid and get paid for it.

the links however should i believe give the DMN better SEO but if they're walling up and wanting to sell their content, good luck. people barely pay for a song they love - how long will they pay for news they hate?

Want to turn the tables on them--

When you open your browser find the private window (that's what it is on my Mac).

Once you are on private browsing, you can go there and it can't block you - read all you want for free.

I highly recommend this message.
There are probably many ways to get behind the paid wall.
Private messages are probably a better way to discuss if you want to discuss.

In the meantime, anyone with a subscription should cancel.

Finally, as others have mentioned, this is their way to a quick death.
CZ brings them how many clicks and subscriptions?

Many sites that do this are in financial trouble and trying to increase revenue.
Usually the number of articles quickly reduce, and it is amazing they continue to put out that many articles are putting up the paid wall...

seeing as many have a way around paid subscriptions, how many does the site give them? :)

Legally there is no basis for the cease and desist order. As long as anything posted from DMN was properly credited, it's fair game. It's what happens when you work in mass media. Good luck with that in court.

On one hand newspapers claim to be the only unbiased source for mass media - look into the arguments made for legal advertisements if you want to put yourself to sleep - then on the other want to claim exclusivity when it comes to redistribution.

That said, the admin. at this place gets to make its own rules and I don't really blame them for wanting to avoid a legal pissing contest. I'd personally tell Belo to get bent but it's not my call to make.

I'd guess that whatever perceived loss in value they were getting by folks posting (fully credited) content to this site will be offset by the loss in value from the traffic due to the new no links policy. So in a way the admin. here have told Belo to get bent in their own way, I guess.

We received a legal Cease & Desist order from the law firm of Dallas Morning News (DMN) today requesting we no longer allow DMN content on the site.

It's unfortunate given that we usually send DMN's web site several hundred users in traffic each day, but it is their choice and their content so we will abide with their legal order.

On the bright side, there are a lot of other great Cowboys news sources available which will help all of us keep up with the latest Cowboys news.

Why didn't they just ask nicely? Jerks.

CZ actually helps them by sending them clicks their way.
What they are actually encouraging people to do now is to report/copy&paste their news and not link to their webpage.
These people are so ignorant they need to go the way of the dinosaur.

The cease and desist letter is simply annoying.
If their IQ was not below 100, they would have asked nicely for people to copy no more than 3 sentences and to post the link their website.
They deserve to lose subscriptions for this.
Hopefully, they lose at least 10 for being annoying when they could have asked nicely like @Phoenix just said.

Reality has every reason to say what he did.
Even if he thinks it is BS.

FWIW, I plan on firing off a complaint email to them and let them know I won't bother reading their stuff anymore.

The only reason I even go to the DMN website to read stuff there is through links here. I'll click on a story linked here, read it and then bounce around their website reading other articles.

Stupid decision on their part.

This exactly. I haven't been on their website once in the last year...except the times that I've gone there from here. It literally makes no sense.

The bigger question is...at what point does Cowboyszone send them a similar letter? Only one of these formats is going to exist in the very near future. My money isn't on the DMN. I can see the day they are trying to pull people back by mentioning this site.
