Developing NFL QBs takes great coaching

Ok, I get it. Dak isn’t great. He has played poorly in almost every game this year. But he’s also not “trash” as too many fans on here think. I know this isn’t a popular opinion, but I hope you read this before trashing it, Lol.

IMO, in the last year and half, Dak has been very poorly served by one of the worst developmental coaching staffs in the NFL. When the team went 13-3 in 2016, and Dak threw for a passing yardage team record in his only playoff game, I think this team’s top brass thought Dak had arrived. Instead of treating him as a developmental project that needed special attention, they treated like a 10 year vet with skins on the wall. Really bad mistake.

When it comes to developing a young QB, good coaching matters a ton. Look at what Andy Reid has done with Patrick Mahomes. As a big Tech fan, I saw Mahomes play a lot in college, and although he has great athletic skills and arm strength, he was very raw coming out of college. Reid has maximized Mahomes’ talent. I’m not comparing Dak to PMs talent, but again, coaching is huge in developing a young QB.

Sean McVea took a young, discouraged Jared Goff and turned him completely around through coaching and making the offensive system fit his skills better. McVea’s philosophy is the polar opposite of the cripplingly conservative Garrett- he often says “We don’t fear failure when making decisions”. Unlike Mahomes, Goff doesn’t have the arm strength but McVea has taught Goff how to maximize his talent. Not saying Dak is Goff. But again, coaching matters a ton when developing a young QB.

Being a decent NFL QB requires so much more than raw talent. It requires a special ability to mentally process what to do at lightening speed, I don’t think most young QBs develop that without some really, really good coaching.

Linehan and Garrett are not only NOT good at mentoring young QBs, the offensive system they use is the NFL’s version of vanilla ice cream. It’s the most unimaginative scheme in the league now. Garrett’s system is based first on the tired moniker, “Fight”.

Maybe Dak will never be anything. But before he’s completely discarded at the very young QB age of25, I would like to see him have a chance with some really good offensive coaches.

Despite what too many seem to think, NFL QBs don’t grow on trees. Fans may hate Dak now but there’s not a QB garden to go pick the next Tom Brady. Even if we found a new young talent at QB- guess what- they have to be developed. If Jerry says he wants to stay with Dak, he better find some coaches that can develop him.
People keep saying that Dak needs coaching and Dak needs the offense tailored to him. What offense currently run in the NFL fits Dak in your estimation, is there currently an offense that you see Dak mastering that is currently run by one of the other 31 teams?

It’s a dang shame too. Dak has the drive, the leader quality, and is willing to work his tail off to get better. But you can’t get better if the ones teaching you are horse crap. The blind leading the blind.
And you can't get better unless you have the talent. Very few 80 IQ's become Rocket Scientists.

Best part of 2016 was our offensive line so Dak could just sit back and find the open receiver and throw a good pass. Now, he doesnt trust the line and is running out of clean pockets and cant stay calm... He is missing WIDE OPEN receivers... that is not coaching

Agree the Oline is not the same, but neither is Dak's game. I blame a lot of this on coaching and scheme. Garrett/Linehan are trying to force him to be more of a pocket passer. In 2016, you saw Dak move around the pocket, rollouts, etc. He also ran more often and made quicker decisions. The 2018 Dak sits in the pocket and holds onto the ball longer. Decisions are slower and he rarely runs. To me this was a coaching decision square peg in a round hole. I don't know what they are teaching him, but I have no confidence in Garrett, Linehan or Moore to groom a QB.

This GM and his “family FO” have to make a decision- if they want to stay with Dak, he needs a great developmental HC and OC. If JJ is committed to the worst Head Coach in the NFL, he better give up on Dak and try to sign a veteran QB that needs nothing.

You can’t succeed with both Dak and Garrett.
I can live with Dak and Garrett as long as they bring in a solid OC and give him full control of the offensive scheme and playing call. Garrett can sit on the sidelines and clap all day.

Kansas City Chiefs are the most glaringly obvious example. He wouldn't put up Mahomes numbers of course, but it would be worlds better than Garrett's garbage. It instantly made Alex Smith a Pro Bowler.
Nobody is gonna succeed in this Offense anymore. We have a HC that gave away 2 games this year himself. We would still be in the hunt. Actually we would be leading the division right now. Even with the sad Monday night loss.

The playcalling is terrible, the execution isn’t there. These players aren’t doing anything but getting a check this year. They are about done with this Offensive staff. Even the Defense has quit. Got 2 take aways at the beginning of that titans game and they watched this Offense squander it. They played like crap after that.

You have a QB coach that they just gave the job to. He was a 3rd stringer the year before.

Barring a miracle and a bunch of help this team is done for the year and it ticks me off. I waited all off season and we won’t even compete. All these changes and nothing. All these things ignored. No TE and no WR and you expect a QB to come out swinging. You don’t hand the ball off to your star RB. And JG let’s your O-Line coach go because he couldn’t make a decision on whether to keep him or not. YOU HAVE ONE OF THE BEST O-LINES IN THE LEAGUE AND YOU LET THE COACH GO!!! THEN TO MAKE IT EASY ON YOURSELF YOU SIMPLY HIRE THE COACH POLLACK IS REPLACING. WHY DO YOU THINK HE IS BEING REPLACED?

It’s obvious everybody is comfy from the players to the staff. We are the only ones frustrated. But I see it building up in JJ. Or he is faking it.
Not without a QB who can push the ball downfield and WR who can separate.
