Knowing what you've said, which is all accurate, it's dumb for anyone to give them anything.

Everything you've said is accurate. In fact, the Eagles will be over the cap when they tag him. So not only can they not sign anybody, they'd have to restructure and or cut the players they still do have.

Unless they've already been working out a deal(s) with other teams. What if they Jaguars hired his former QB coach for this moment? And what if they know John Elway has a lot more cap room to give him the moon in free agency? They have no chance. Unless they throw away a 5. But what if Elway will give up a 4? Then they offer a 3. That's the real point to all this. Suddenly the Commanders need a QB and might be interested in throwing away a 3 to stay competitive with Smith out. That's the hope, one of the teams who wants him needs to keep him off the open market.

I remember similar chatter about Romo too. And the league waited out the Cowboys until they cut him. They'll do the same to the Eagles.

Maybe the Eagles just did this to get that $2 million buyout back? That would be the smarter, safer move.

But if they do end up franchising him, they probably know a lot more than us. Maybe there's a third option we're not seeing, who knows.

Sit on a bench and earn plenty of money and a nice NFL pension. Yes please!

If the birds decide to tag Foles, which no doubt they will, then they have to cut players and or rework existing contracts. They do not have enough cap space to sign Foles.

If I were Foles, I would sign the tag the minute it is available. It will force the birds hand and prevent them from pulling the tag back at the last minute.

Trade our pedestrian QB and sign Foles

Foles gets a lot of love based mostly on one strong preseason in an otherwise very ordinary, and often below average 7 year career. What about the playoffs this season? In 2 games he was a combined 43-71 for 467 yards, 3 TDs and 4 INT's.

If the Eagles franchise him that's a risk they have to live. Foles was not particularly good in those 2 playoff game, throw 2 picks in each game.

I would suspect that teams would be willing to give up a mid round pick in order to control his rights. If you trade, say a 3rd rounder for him, you now control him for 2 years with the tags. If he hits the open market, there's no guarantee then that you could land him.

There's no doubt the Eagles are over a barrel here which is why talk of first round picks, 2nd round picks is likely pie in the sky. But I could see a team throwing a 3rd or a 4th and maybe a 7th at the Eagles to control him for two seasons.

Any team would be better off not trading anything for him since they know he'll be going to FA. They can compete for him. The highest bidder will still pay less than in any trade under a franchise tag. And save the draft pick.

What are you talking about?

The Eagles just got some leverage back.

This year’s QB draft class is weak and Foles is the most attractive “available” QB on the market. He’s got proven postseason track record and is still relatively young at 29.

I could EASILY see a team giving up draft capital on him.

You think some team (say the Jags) are gonna say “ha ha, called your bluff! We kept our 3rd rounder and still have Bortles!!!!”

The problem is trading for Foles would be trading for a player that isn't even under contract. It would take having to make a trade based on having the ability to have him franchised for a year without knowing if a longer term deal could be worked out. How much would a team trade for that?

What I and everyone else is seeing is a capped out team trying to fool people, ultimately fooling themselves.

So they’ll sit on their hands for a season waiting it out?

They won't have to, because the Eagles will be the team that's stuck. Over the cap, forced to cut other players, and unable to resign any of their own or anybody else's.

Oh, and with an obvious quarterback controversy.

Yeah, I'll take that bet every time.

He's still 30-20 as a starter, 4 career playoff wins, 4.3% to 2.1% TD to INT ratio, and has a reputation as an aggressive downfield passer. He doesn't have to be Aaron Rodgers, he just has to be a noticeable upgrade to Bortles or Keenum.
