Underrated part of the game

It doesn't matter what tendency you see on film, if your players don't execute to take advantage of it. You don't think that was a tendency they saw with Witten on the catch ? Only problem Witten fumbled, that's execution, Cooper got two big OPI on Nov catches, that's execution, the oline was constantly whipped all night, that's execution.

You still aren't answering the question which is quite telling.

Again, no one has ever argued that players can make a play go bad. That call to Witten was a great call, great throw and Witten screwed it up. No one has ever argued that a player(s) can't screw up a play. That's not what people are asking.

I'll ask for a third time. Can a coach/coordinator have a bad game plan? Can a coach/coordinator call a bad play or set of plays? Can a coordinator make certain play calls based on tendencies they see from the opposition? Take execution out of it entirely, or assume a play was executed correctly. Is it impossible that it might not work because it was the wrong call in a situation? What happens when an OC calls a specifically play and it's executed as designed but the DC calls a play and it is also executed as designed?

Let's go further. What goes into a play call during a game? Is it just a coordinator randomly selecting plays off of his play sheet with no rhyme or reason behind that call? Essentially just throwing darts at a play sheet?

Exactly, because if they're executing they're moving the ball.

Except you said this a page back:

you can't simply keep throwing it, you have to mix it up

Why would the Cowboys need to mix it up? I mean in the end, there is no need to mix it up. Throw it on every first down. Or run it on every first down. Shouldn't matter. As long as you execute. In fact, if play calls and game plans are ideal and it comes down to execution, then having to "mix it up" is BS. The only reason to mix it up is keep a defense more honest or off balance. But according to you, why should that matter? As long as you execute, you shouldn't need to mix it up.

Why couldn't the Cowboys keep throwing it? According to you, the type of play call doesn't matter. It's all about execution.

No you don't draw up poor gameplans

No disrespect intended. But we disagree on a fundamental level. So I’m gonna have to call it on this discussion.

There is no damn question to answer. You're chasing your tail, games are won on execution .

D held them to 12 points, granted it was against checkdown Teddy.

Somewhere in my heart of hearts, I think I'd have had to force Teddy to beat me over the top ... I mean it's not like he had Jerry Rice and John Taylor on the outside.

Yep.

And note, I started this thread not to blame the defense for the loss. The offense was the much bigger culprit here. I was just pointing in a situation in the game where a truly great defense, like some think we have, can't let what happened, happen IMO.

I've said for years that, "The only thing the Prevent Defense does is prevent you from winning."

It's like talking to a damn brick.

Right as some of us were pinning you down on important questions and pointing out some possible contradictions in your comments, you want to grab your ball and go home.

We should bring back Dave Campo and Linehan and all of the coaches that were previously fired since they’re blameless. The defense played great? That’s a nice joke. They marched up and down the field at will, and our defense did nothing until they were in field goal range. And our offense, led by me conservative, went back to putting square pegs into round holes. It was obvious they weren’t allowing us to run, but let’s keep doing it since we paid all of those fat linemen to block. Coaching lost us this game led by coach carrot and grandpa Marineli and his skinny 1 techs. On to the next

Anyone who thinks this kindergarten defense is elite needs to put down the bong.

11 minutes to go and the Saints pick up a holding penalty that puts them in a 1st and 20.

An elite defense doesn't allow a team with a backup QB to get that first down. But we did. And allowed the Saints to basically chew 5-6 minutes off the clock.

I hate how we play defense at times in certain situations. I know, we are effective, but we are too conservative for our own good at times.

1st and 20, we give up 6 yards on a screen. Not bad. But then the next play is what drives me ******* crazy with Richard and Marinelli. We drop into our patented deep zone and give up an easy 8 yard pass to a TE with no one around him. That gives the Saints a manageable 3rd and 6.

We don't seem to challenge any short passes. We seem content to just sit back, give the completion and hope Smith, LVE, Lee or Thomas come up, make the tackle and we live to see another day. Good teams will exploit that and take the 6-7 yards and just work their way down the field against us.

Just a rant about a particular part of the game that frustrated me. You can't give up a first down in that situation. Just can't.

The Cowboys defense gave up 12 points...
