Disagree.

Like someone said, Barry was the better runner....Emmitt was a better running back. Did you ever see Barry block? How about catch a pass? Carry out a fake?
Emmitt was a great blocker and receiver. I remember one night vs Chicago when he faked running the ball and dove over the DL without the ball.

Emmitt wasn't just a chain mover. He was also a homerun hitter. He seemed to break a 30 plus yard run at least once a game. You may be remembering the Emmitt from late in his career when he lost what little speed he had.

I loved to watch Barry run. I really did. But give me Emmitt 7 days of the week. He did whatever it took to win. That's where he passes Barry big time.
You needn't school me on my most favorite player of all time. I've watched every Emmitt run at least 20 times each.

Barry was a complete back, too. He unfortunately never played with crap at QB outside of a year or two, so he had to shoulder the load. His lone fault was that he took to many negative runs while trying to hit home runs. However, I think part of that was out of the need to do so.

If Emmitt was drafted by a scrub team, he'd be remembered more like Barry Foster or Eddie George than who he is.

I admit I'm a total homer on this debate, but while I admit Barry was a more electrifying player, Emmitt was the more well-rounded back. Great runner, of course (who made his OL as much as they have made him), but also a guy who could pick up the blitz and catch passes. Emmitt could excel in poor conditions or good conditions. Barry was a one-dimensional artificial turf guy.

So you see, yeah, total homer.

What does high school have to do with the NFL. I could point out tons of players who dominated at the HS level who couldn't play in the NFL.

The point is hes always been great. The oline argument has already been defeated.

Huge downside. 3 and short and goal line means he came out.
mountain out of molehill imo.

Every year it seems on this board people amplify that negative stat more and more...almost as bad as those out there saying Emmitt would be only slightly better than jag if he played on a crap team.
While Barry averaged more rushing and receiving yards per year and per play, they also scored TDs at almost exactly the same clip, btw.

Emmitt was great
Barry was great

By far most say Barry was slightly better, but that doesn't make it true.
Different animals.

We're on a Cowboy site, so we are allowed to favor our guy.

According to the homers on this board Barry lost yards on nearly every run, but he still finished at 5 yards per carry for his career, nearly a full yard more than Emmitt. Maybe Emmitt needed to run backward more.

Emmitt was drafted by a team coming off a 1-15 season.

Smith was the better back, Barry's O-line was pretty good...For me Smith had better intangibles and more dependable, could leave him on the field in any situation. I didn't like how Barry quit and retired just before training camp leaving the Lions with few options, great teammates don't bail on their team like that...#22 all the way.

Barry was a more gifted player But that's very different from being "better".

If you compare highlight tapes, Barry is easily the better player.

But if you watch snap by snap, game by game, you see how Emmitt positively effected every play. He didn't give up 5 yards to run around defenders. He didn't come out of games near the goal line.
Emmitt wasn't an all or nothing guy. He beat you every play. No trickery. And he kept coming over and over and over for 15 years.

Yes, Emmitt had great OL. He also had not great OL. The guy played 15 years. He was a competitor that fit Dallas with Troy and Mike also driven to win.
Guys like that don't up and retire. Emmitt was winner and champion at every level of football, Sanders was not.

Barry = Most exciting runner in history.
Moss = One of the Most exciting receiver in history next to Owens.

Don't think either was better overall.

Ok..

Can you remember a game we won without Emmitt? I can remember winning without Troy.. Never without Emmitt...

I've always found that to be a weak argument. Dallas didn't play many games without Emmitt. Who knows if they would have won some of the team without him. They did beat Green Bay in 1999 without Emmitt, Troy or Michael.

Did Emmit have anyone drafted higher than the 3rd round on his OL? Did Emmit have castoffs from other teams on his OL? Are any of Emmits great wall on the HOF? They were great as a unit. They had great coaching. But lets not act like they were 5 blue chippers. Other guys ran behind this same OL when Emmit was out....and did not look like a HOFer. And Emmit also blocked and caught passes. Emmit also got a steady 4+ yards. Emmit was savage around the goaline and in short yardage. Barry was electric....but give me Emmit all day. And during Barrys prime...the Lions had the highest paid OL in the league.

The other guys that Dallas had running behind the line were scrubs. I'm not choosing sides between Emmitt and Barry, but Dallas picked up a lot of trash to back up Emmitt in the early 90s. That is why they did not like HOFers behind the o-line. The Cowboys didn't bring in a competent back up until they signed Chris Warren and then they misused both him and Emmitt.

True

And with much of that team, he had 937 years and averaged 3.9 y ypc with 7 fumbles his 1st year.

Definitely a team game

I apologize if I came off that way.

No insults intended.

Name Barry Sanders offensive line.

Now name Emmitt's.

Kevin Glover and Lomas Brown, multi time Pro Bowlers/All Pros.

Only HoF'er for Dallas O-Line is....Larry Allen. Who didn't start playing until Emmitt's 4th year in the league.

'I was just a journeyman offensive linemen until Emmitt came along and then all of the sudden I became an All-Pro.' - Nate Newton
