I'm a Cowboys fan. I've never even had a "second favorite" team. I visit lots of other teams' message boards to see what fans are saying, and I occasionally post on them, but I'm not a fan of any other team at all.

How could it be any other way?

We have $104.1 million committed to next year's cap, but $5.7 million of that will disappear when Zach Thomas' and Kevin Burnett's contracts void. So we really have $98 million committed.

I think the current projections are about $123 million.

Cool beans.

Thanks, Adam.

Thanks Adam for keeping us posted,

Got a couple of questions for you Adam, super cap specialist;

First as you know we signed Hamlin today;
ESPN: Hamlin Deal Done
siap, I didn't see it on the board.

The Dallas Cowboys and Pro Bowl safety Ken Hamlin have agreed to a six-year, $39 million contract, ESPN's Ed Werder reports.

Hamlin, the Cowboys' franchise player, received $15 million in guaranteed money and a $9 million signing bonus.

The deal was completed before Tuesday's 4 p.m. ET deadline for teams to finalize long-term deals with franchised players.

Hamlin made his first Pro Bowl during the Cowboys' 13-3 season. He finished with 62 tackles and five interceptions, one behind team leader Anthony Henry.

Ed Werder covers the NFL for ESPN.

So, how much cap money do we have now. Next, as I understand it, we have 8 million added into cap money for next year, due to romos and davis deal, and most likely some player like tony curtis that cant reach incentives, about 2-3 million.

So, do we have enough money now to sign Canty? And how much would it cost the cowboys cap money wise to sign our draft picks that they are alloted.

Then, would we have enough money to sign Chris Simms if he becomes available? How much cap money do you think that would cost,

thanks, joe

adam never mind on the draft picks allotment, i found your post,

where it should cost the cowboys 2.2 to sign our draft picks and undrafted players etc.

as i see it, 8, 2 million or so,
2.2 draft picks leaves;
6 million,
so 3-4 million to sign hamlin leaves us;
about 2=3 million, now much left to get cantys deal done i guess;

Hamlin was already counting roughly 4.5 million under the franchise tag so signing him most likely lowered that number.

Update (7/17/08) -- After signing Ken Hamlin, we're now $10,581,478 under the cap, which is the 13th-most in the league right now. Hamlin's new contract reduced his cap number by $2,297,720. The only other change since my the last update I posted was a small charges for Ryan Gibbons' workout bonus ($960) after he signed a few weeks ago.

Signing all of our draft picks and having Adam Jones reinstated will use up no more than $2,331,123 of our cap room, so we have an extra $8,250,355 of cap room right now.

Is it normal to leave $8,000,000 available or is it likely that they will offer Canty or use it/reallocate it in some way before the season starts or before a certain date?

They'll use it if they need it. Whatever is left before the end of the season will get pushed forward into next season, when cap room will be at a premium because of the new rules that will come into play if the CBA isn't extended.

just like AT&T minutes? Whatever we dont use this year, we can use next year? Not use it or lose it?

Glenn is under contract through 2010. If we release him now, we would save $1.7 million of cap room this season and $650,000 in 2009.

Romo's cap number is $4,574,219, and Davis' is $5,173,386.

Next season, Romo's is $4,582,499, and Davis' is $4,166,666.

We had $10,581.478 cap room before signing all our draft picks which cost us around $2.2M, leaving us with $8.381.478M left. But I read that we will gain $1.7M this year by cutting Glenn which now leaves us with $10,081.478M under the cap. That's more then enough money to resign Ware now if we want to wait for some reason until 2009. Or to wait until about the middle of the 08 season & if Canty continues to play very well & if Tank Johnson really steps up his play this year, we could also resign him. That means we'd still be around $4-5M under the cap. Whatever the case, I'm sure Jerry & Stephen will resign all the players we need to remain a legit SB contender for several years down the road. Also another reason he might hold off until resigning anybody until later in the season would be to be prepared should 1 of the WRs we want is suddenly available, etc.

Update (7/30/08) -- After signing all of our draft picks, releasing Terry Glenn and signing Todd Lowber, we currently are $10,005,228 under the cap.

If Adam Jones is reinstated, it will cost us $330,000 of cap room.

When the regular season starts, every player's base salary -- including players on injured reserve, if we have any -- will count against the cap. Right now, the only base salaries that count against the cap are those of the players with the 51 highest cap numbers (this is commonly known as the Rule of 51). Teams generally lose cap room once the Rule of 51 goes away, but whether we lose or gain cap room, and how much, will depend on which players make the team.

Could we have traded Glenn to Miami, or woud have there been a hit

And if we make any deals with Miami, besides the untouchable players, who does Parcells really love?

It's the same either way, as far as the cap is concerned. But they probably knew they wouldn't have to trade for him.
