Here is a round by round synopsis of what we are probably looking at.

1st Round
No Cowboys 1st round pick. Traded away in Roy Williams deal.

2nd Round
1. Our 2nd round pick. Will be a late pick in that round.

3rd Round
2. Browns 3rd round pick. Received in a 2008 Draft day deal with Cleveland. Should be in the top 10 picks of the 3rd round unless Browns continue to rebound.

No Cowboys 3rd round pick. Traded away in Roy Williams deal.

4th Round
3. Lions 4th round pick. Received in a 2008 Draft day deal with Detroit. Could be the 1st pick in round 4. Will almost certainly be top 3 pick of that round.

4. Our 4th round pick. Will be a late pick in that round.

5th Round
5. Titans 5th round pick. As a result of suspension of Pacman Jones. Looking like it will be a late 5th round pick unless Titans begin to fade.

6. Our 5th round pick. Will be a late pick in that round.

7. A likely Compensatory 5th round pick for Jacques Reeves signing with the Texans. End of round 5. Cannot be traded.

6th Round
8. Dolphins 6th round pick. Received in the Jason Ferguson deal. Will likely be near the top 10 picks of that round.

No Cowboys 6th round pick. Traded away in Roy Williams deal. Originally this pick was owed to Titans in the Pacman deal. We got it back when he was suspended, and on the same day Jerry used it to complete the deal for Roy.

9. A likely Compensatory 6th round pick for Julius Jones signing with the Seahawks. End of round 6. Cannot be traded.

7th Round
10. Lions 7th round pick. Received in the Roy Williams trade. Will likely be in the top 3 picks of the 7th round.

11. Our 7th Round pick. Will be a late pick in that round.

12. A likely Compensatory 7th round pick for Nate Jones signing with the Dolphins. End of round 7. Cannot be traded.

12 Draft picks and a loaded team. 9 of the 12 can be traded. 3 cannot be traded.I doubt we can get back into the 1st round unless we trade a future 1st round pick. I doubt we would. It is not impossible that we could look to move to the top of the 2nd round to grab someone.Prediction...we will swing a deal with the Dolphins this off season for John Beck to be Romo's backup. This would likely be somewhere around the 4th round that we send a pick to the Dolphins. It could be multiple picks if we are bidding for him.

Draft focuses in 2009.

Don't you think a 6th rounder for Julius is kinda low?

I figured it would at least be a 4th rounder considering he's starting for the Seahawks.

It is based partially on salary of the new deal. I am merely following a prediction by AdamJT13 a few months back.

I agree with your review we probably aren't going to move back into round 1:

1. OT/OG
2. Safety
3. LB

I am not a John Beck fan for anything but a FA pick-up or 7th round.
I think Roy Williams-Safety is gone after this year.
I think we need some attitude from the LB position as well. Bobby Carpenter-BUST is gone next year too.

What is Greg Ellis' status for next year?

dont forget that we need an ILB.I think only 5-6 players from the next draft making the team-so moving up or acquiring more picks would be the way to do it.

I think we need to address our NT and ILB issue before the OL. It's ridiculous hearing myself say that considering all the picks we've spent on the defensive side of the ball.

Carpenter is gonna be stocking shelves before too long and while Ratliff has shown some spark, we don't have the big uglies needed to have success in the 3-4.

It's hilarious how many defensive players we've drafted in recent years and it's our offense we rely on. Wait, no it's not. It's sad.

I was about to ask that same question... Thanks for the clarification:star:

Yes, I absolutely agree...

I didn't like to see Fergy go, I'd like to see the FA market for nose tackles anyway...

...to be revisited

Carpenter will go to a 4-3 team and have a nice career.

yea he said that the other day he said the only way the pick goes up is if JJ runs for like 1500 yards and makes the probowl or something along those lines.....

I think if there's someone that we are high on like Spencer was when we traded back into the 1st round in order to draft him we will do that.

Good post Hostile;

2009 Draft Thoughts
Here is a round by round synopsis of what we are probably looking at.

1st Round
No Cowboys 1st round pick. Traded away in Roy Williams deal.

2nd Round
1. Our 2nd round pick. Will be a late pick in that round.

I think 2 things, either jerry jones packages one of the 4th picks to move up in 2nd round to get a player that is falling, but wont be available to them at the end of 2nd round. The other thing that could happen, say a player is falling in the 1st round, but could get there from the 28th to 32nd pick, jerry jones could package his 2010 picks to move up and get a good super player, but I doubt it, but at same time if you look at this team, they are fairly loaded now, and not too many roster spots left on this team. The Cowboys have 11 to 12 picks, i see packaging for better players this year, or next year. Kinda like the cowboys did in the draft last year for clevelands and detroits picks.
3rd Round
2. Browns 3rd round pick. Received in a 2008 Draft day deal with Cleveland. Should be in the top 10 picks of the 3rd round unless Browns continue to rebound.

This is the key spot, as you all know now, in the nfl draft, there are only 2 rounds in the first day of the draft, so now teams want a high 3rd, say if the cowboys will do as i think and package either one of their 4th or 5th picks to move up in 2nd round, and possibly use the other one to move up in the 3rd round. That would give you 2 quality players for this team. Thats what the cowboys need now, quality players not quanity.

I am not sure if the cowboys will get a compensation pick for Nate Jones, adam our great salary cap guru said no, he didnt think so, so i am going that way, im not looking for this pick, but if we get it, all the better.

I totally agree, unless a player falls in the 1st round, kinda like Marino did years ago, a super QB but fell for whatever reason, or like Quinn did a few years ago, I dont see the Cowboys jumping up to get a player and lose their 2010 first round pick. I do totally agree with you Hostile that it would cost the Cowboys their 2010 1st round pick to get back into the 1st round, I dont see Jerry Jones doing that, unless say a super player falls for whatever reason, like marino, quinn or stephen jackson fell a few years ago.

Our most obvious needs are these,
A good OT or OG, because Columbo is in contract year, and with Kosier out, Proctor hasnt played well and Davis will be 30 i think next year, and Flozell is getting older. I do think that Doug Free is the answer at LOT, but he has to play.

I love kevin burnett, but he keeps getting hurt, and he is in a contract year next year, and whus bobby carpenter to me, just isnt a mean nasty linebacker period. So, the 3-4 is built on linebackers and with greg elllis a year older and spencer hurt some this year, i see the cowboys going after a linebacker next year, or in free agency. Remember reports are that zach thomas would only play one year, even though he signed a 3 year deal. So linebacker is needed,. the Cowboys need a thumper like a urlacher or ray lewis a linebacker that puts fear in running backs, etc.

Fullback, dont get me wrong, I love anderson, the cricket, but he keeps getting hurt at critical times, and this offense is built on the fullback. Now what i would like to see happen is the cowboys get Javorski Lane, fullback runnign back from Texas A & M.

Defensive line,
either the Cowboys have to resign chris canty and I love him, to me, he is the hidden defensive linemen on this group, and spears. Or the Cowboys have to go draft another defensive linemen that is built to play the 3-4. There are some big defensive linemen next year in the draft too.

Safety or cornerback.
Newman is getting older, and has been hurt last 2 years, Henry will be 31 or 32, possibly move him to free safety and move hamlin to strong safety. The jury is still out on roy williams, I think he can turn it around, but no way can the cowboys keep depending on watkins, he keeps getting hurt, and courtney brown all he is a cover safety, brown sure doesnt comeup in run support, he acts like he doesnt like to hit. So, either a corner or really good safety.

Backup QB, I do agree that the Cowboys might trade for QB with Miami, the cowboys might regret not signing free agent chris simms when they had the chance, or keeping Matt Moore. Brad Johnson is getting way long in the toothe, and I am not sure sold on Bollingser, the 3rd string QB.

Thats 6 key positions to me that the Cowboys need in next years draft, and the way the roster is set up, thats possibly all the cowboy could keep on the roster.

With Roy Williams WR now, T O, Stanback, Austin, you might see the cowboys trade Hurd or Crayton next year in the draft. Might be a possiblity.

If practice squad player Rodney Hannah keeps improving, and I think he will, you might see the cowboys trade tony curtis next year too. Think about it, you have witten, and bennett, those will be the 2 main tight ends and if Hannah improves that would allow the cowboys to trade curtis.

That would give you some ammunition to move up in the draft, and you might possibly see bobby carpenter unless he improves vastly, you might see him next year traded to parcells, since parcells tried to get carpenter this year in the draft. Those players, hurd or crayton, curtis, and bobby carpenter might allow you to move up with miami and get a couple of better players in the draft.

The reason why i am saying this, no matter what, this could be wade phillips last year, even if he goes to the super bowl and wins, I feel like most cowboy fans that jason garrett might be the new head coach next year, and I think garrett would push to get a few more players high quality in the draft, kinda like this year when the cowboys got jenkins and felix jones and scandrick.

Draft focuses in 2009.

Thanks for the analysis Hos, the only thing I pray is that we are not "bidding" for John Beck, as you put it. Don't think he's worth more than a 5th at most.

I have seen several mocks that have Spikes as a 1st or 2nd rounder

I have seen DJ going as high as the 2nd in a few mocks as well
