A football team is more than one player. Those niners teams were stacked from top to bottom.

I'm not saying Irvin was better don't get me wrong. And I'm not saying Rice wasn't great. I just think this talk of him being the greatest football player of all time is a little far fetched, thats all.

we could do this all day. maybe marino would have won some rings with a good defense. Moon too. maybe emmitt was only as good as his beast of a line. maybe irvin never would have been so open without emmitt. maybe dallas could have won another ring or two if it wasn't for refs and dropped touchdowns. maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe.

i deal in results.

I'm not saying he's the best football player ever. i don't even know how you begin to measure that. but he is CLEARLY the best receiver of all time. if you disagree, please provide your case for someone else. the one for Rice is well documented.

i'll be here waiting......for the rest of my life.

CowboysZone ULTIMATE Fan
Itta Bena, Mississippi is less than two hours away from my hometown. Jerry Rice's greatest was already apparent while playing in Coach Cooley's crazy run-and-gun offense at Mississippi Valley.

Being a Cowboy fan, I cursed the very moment San Francisco drafted Rice. Not the next day. Not a week later. Not during his so-so rookie season (even though he still had games which told everyone why the 49ers took him in the first). That moment.

I'm not going to attempt to argue the point. If there are people who believe that the man wasn't the best of all-time at the position, that's fair enough. They belong to a very small minority among all sports fans. When I say 'small', I mean minuscule. That's not an opinion. That is a fact.

I'm not saying Rice isn't a HOF player, because he was great. But I think he gets a little too much praise. He had some serious advantages most WR's could only dream of.....

No cold weather games.
8 per year in 60 degree San Francisco
1 in Atlanta (dome)
1 in Los Angeles
1 in New Orleans (dome)

Great weather + Great quarterbacks + inferior competition = Great numbers

Again, don't get me wrong, I think he would be a great player on just about any team, but I don't think he would be called "GOAT" if he didn't land on the perfect team, at the perfect time, with the niners.

Just my two cents though.

You obviously have never been to San Francisco. It gets cold and rains there too. You prolly think every town in California is 72 degrees and sunny 365 days a year. It can get really windy and wet at Candlestick. That is in Northern Cal not Southern. :laugh2: :laugh1: :lmao:

ehhh, the same argument is made against Irvin and Emmitt but I bet you drop it like a wet rag when it's used against them.

I've already stated by case about Irvin. I don't think he was better than Rice.

As far as Emmitt, he was a great player. But I don't believe he was a top 5 RB in NFL history. Top 10, yes.

So your assumption is false.

I've been there several times. Go spend a winter in the Northeast and tell me which one you'd rather catch footballs in.

Emmitt, Rice, & Sharpe IMO. I would be surprised if any other WR makes it this year, even though Brown, Reed, and Carter are all HoF'ers to me. I'd make a strong consideration for Haley, too. His impact on the Super Bowl dynasties of the 90s should not be overlooked.

If the Cowboys had Rice instead of Irvin they would have thrown it 530 times a season as well.

I love the Playmaker, but let's not get too crazy. Receptions, yards etc., Jerry Rice scored over 200 TDs as a WR. That's the most amazing stat.

Just out of curiosity I wanted to play out some of the hypotheticals that have been brought up when comparing Rice and Irvin. Obviously you cant predict pro bowls and such so this is just numbers.

IF IRVIN PLAYED THE SAME AMOUNT OF TIME AS RICE

(based on Irvin career stats averaged out)

Irvin averaged 68.18 receptions a year, 1082.18 receiving yards and 5.90 TD's per season. He played 11 seasons. Multiply those numbers by 9 to match the years Rice played and the comparison would look something like this.

RECEPTIONS:
Rice 1549 Receptions
Irvin 1363 Receptions
**based on the avg's, Irvin would of had to play 2.5 more seasons to catch Rice**

RECEIVING YARDS:
Rice 22895
Irvin 21643
**based on avg's Irvin would of had to play about 1 more season to catch Rice**

RECEIVING TD's:
Rice 208
Irvin 118
**based on avg's Irvin would of had to play about 15 more seasons to catch Rice**

HOW ABOUT IF RICE ONLY PLAYED 11 SEASONS?
1st 11 or last 11?

FIRST 11

RECEPTIONS:
Rice 942
Irvin 750

RECEIVING YARDS:
Rice 15123
Irvin 11904

RECEIVING TD'S:
Rice 146
Irvin 65

LAST 11

RECEPTIONS:
Rice 729
Irvin 750

RECEIVING YARDS:
Rice 9620
Irvin 11904

RECEIVING TD'S:
Rice 66
Irvin 65

If anything, if your going to stick to the argument that Irvin is better then Rice I gave fuel when I compared Irvins career vs the last 11 years of Rice's career.

Your welcome:D

infact you could make the case Michael had the best 5 year stretch of all time.

Rice bettered those numbers during a 4 year stretch from 1993-1996

I love Michael Irvin and on a game by game analysis he is one of the best all time, but what Jerry Rice did for as long as he did will never be matched. Not even in today's pass happy league where almost every single rule is set up to make it a passing league.

Rice is a the greatest offensive skill player to ever play the game.

That is getting a bit carried away. Jimmy built the team to be a run first team, that wouldnt of changed regardless of who the WR or QB was.

I think that Russ Grimm, Charles Haley, Jerry Rice, Shannon Sharpe, and Emmitt Smith should all get in this year. I'm not sure why others left off Grimm from their lists (other than the fact that he was a Redstink), he was a great OL.

When is Larry Allen illegible? I was just wondering. I lost track of him after he left for the forty whiners.
