2013 Turnover Differential

The Cowboys are number 1 in the NFC with a +9 turnover differential. They are second in the league ONLY to Kansas City. That is the most confusing thing about this year by far. In 2011 and 2012, you could EASILY point to why we lost games; we turned the ball over too many times. That just plain isn't happening this year, but we are seeing the same results.

The single most correlative statistic to winning in the NFL is turnover differential, which makes this even stranger. Either our turnovers or our record are an aberration.

Couldn't agree more. I already see a bunch of posts in here about how the offense didn't capitalize. I think the turnovers have masked how bad the defense has been.

Its pretty simple. The defense is, I think, dead last in yards allowed. Its going to wind up the worst Cowboys defense in the club's history as far as yards allowed. This is a horrible, horrible defense. They do force turnovers, but rarely force a punt. They can not slow a good passer down, just can't. Its interesting that they tried and build a defense around press corners that Rob Ryan coveted then canned him after only two seasons. This organization tends to do that, knee jerk signings, knee jerk firings, knee jerk philosophy changes. The organization has been a mess for a long, long time.

You can almost see a road strategy forming. Play a bend don't break defense and try to force multiple turnovers. Tell the QB to never take a chance, stay patient and if the defense makes a mistake maybe we can break off a couple of 50+ yard TDs. Whatever you do, don't throw an interception! I'd love to have gotten more than 13 points off turnovers. 4 turnovers should lead to about 20 points IMO, so we left 7 points on the field.

That said, I would have preferred the defensive production that the lions had over the COwboys, turnovers and all. Cowboys offense has become VERY good at being careful with the ball. I wish the defense wasn't so easy to move against.

This has been our strategy for years. We are a VERY conservative road team. And honestly, if the defense was just a little bit better at getting a few stops, we'd be a very effective one as well.

Marinelli is what has helped teach our team to strip the ball, gang tackle, and always look to intercept the ball. The players are doing that but with that said, our defense just isn't that good. We get the turnovers but we also let the other teams score plenty. Our offense needs to step up IMO. We no our defense isn't that good but they will still get you turnovers. We have to be more aggressive on offense if we want to win.

We have. We've scored 60 points off of those turnovers. That's 5th best in the league. We had 52 points all of last year.

Yeah let's not get turnovers who needs those. Just think if we didn't have those turnovers where we'd be.

I'm still a fan of our secondary for the most part. I think it needs some depth, but I will take Carr/Claiborne/Scandrick/Church/Wilcox over Newman/Jenkins/Scandrick/Sensabaugh/Whatever other scrub. I think that if Spencer, Ware AND Crawford weren't all injured, this defense would look drastically different.

Spot on. Turnovers are great, but when your defense is only capable of giving up 6 or getting a TO, you're in for some rough games.

4 turnovers from the Lions and Dallas has 13 points in the 4th quarter, 7 of which came on a drive starting at the Lions 4 yard line.

The offense is sandbagging the team right now in so many ways. Redzone efficiency is way up, turnovers are down but the problem is the team just doesn't get to the redzone as often as they should be. Which is really weird because they used to get there often and just screw it up for a FG or worse.

Now they struggle to get there but when they do they're pretty much rock solid.

That's the big bright shining star of our defense. Unfortunately, we have other glaring deficiencies, both on defense and on offense.
