The SB teams have so much depth it was insane.

If we win the SB, let's jumpstart this thread, but until then, it's all hearsay.

This team doesn't have the talent on both sides of the ball that the 90s teams had. Nor the depth. And most critically, they don't have the rings.

I do think this team is on an upward trajectory and has a chance to do something special this year and the next few years if they draft well and retain key guys. But they are a ways off to even be in the conversation with the 90s greats.

The best Dallas Cowboys team that I ever saw was the 1995 team that beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl. Jason Garrett has been building the current team in the image of that 1995 team that he was on. On paper you can see the comparisons of Romo to Aikman, Murray to Smith, Witten to Novacek and Bryant to Irvin. Both teams even have a top notch O-line. The current team is missing the top ranked defense that the 95 team had but that's about the only obvious difference. This offence is built to win Super Bowls and if they don't get it done this year, you can bet the coming improvements on the defense next season will make them a odds on favorite to win it then. Please discuss.
I do agree that the trajectory--if they keep adding the right pieces--looks very good. There are other good teams doing it too though.

And missing a top ranked defense is a fairly giant "Macy's parade balloon-sized" difference....as Dennis Miller would say.
We are literally talking about nearly 40% of a team right there.

Agreed. It's virtually impossible to field teams that were as good top to bottom as pre-salary era juggernauts.

It's certainly has the potential to be the best Cowboys team of the modern salary-cap (mid to late 1990s era) on.

The 1981 Team that lost to SF on the Dwight Clark Catch had the Following on Offense. Tony Dorsett, Robert Newhouse, Danny White, Billy Joe Dupree, Tony Hill, Drew Pearson, Butch Johnson and Doug Cosbie. And On Defense Randy White, To Tall Jones, Harvey Martin, DD Lewis, Bob Bruenig, Charlie Waters, Everson Walls, Come on Man....

Here is how I see it. 8 players for the 1995 team and 3 players for the 2014 team.

Skill positions
Aikman
> Romo
Emmitt > DeMarco
Johnson > Clutts
Irvin > Bryant
K.Williams < T.Williams
Novacek < Witten

Offensive Line
Tuinei
> Smith
Newton > Leary
Donaldson < Fredrick
Allen
> Martin
Williams > Free

No need to compare the defense
i would like to respectfully argue just a little.....troy is not better than Romo...Irvin is not better than Bryant..Tuinei is not better than Smith...Oh, and no one is better than Allen. that's just not fair....lol

I just spit up my coffee! How quickly we forget how great those teams were. The 92 team was amazing, but the 93 team may have been better but its harder to repeat. The 95 team willed it seld to a Title in spite of what was going on around them. Back then the NFC and NFC East was tough, there were great teams with as much talent as us (SF, GB, Buffalo, Pitts, Philly, Houston, KC) so it wasnt a cake walk to do what they did, and they did it 3 times in 4 years.

the 1977 team was best ever then 92 and 92 teams then 1971 team
If you were to say per competition in the league that might be a fair statement....However,if it were possible to put those two teams on the field at the same time. the 92 team would roll the 77 team. Bigger faster stronger...period.

One humongous negative with regards to the 24/7 news cycle, Twitter and message boards is that every action, every day, is a moment for a referendum on something. After the Cowboys beat the Seahawks, there were numerous posts, column inches and air time devoted to answering the question as to whether the Cowboys were the best team in the NFL. After Week 7.

After Thanksgiving, there were numerous posts, column inches and air time devoted to answering whether the Cowboys were poised to collapse in December again, whether Romo would "fail" in December again, and whether Chip Kelly was the biggest innovator to hit the league in some time.

Can we just take a breath, and enjoy what has been a terrific season for the Cowboys without having to compare it to something that bears no resemblance to what we are seeing now?

No not the best Cowboys team ever. Not only 90's team but the 1977 Cowboys were great with a defense lead by Randy White and Harvey Martin going 12-2 on the season.
Those teams made names for themselves and now it is time for this team to make a name for themselves

Lets wait and see if this team wins the SB first before we compare them to our great teams of the past.

Offensively I think its there, but defensively .....although they are playing with alot of heart, is still 3-4 players away.

If the 1977 team had the advantages of year round nutritional advances, off season training programs and the like, and played in a time where you could legally hold on the offensive line and not touch wide receivers after five yards, they would have been much closer physically in size/stature to the 1992 team, and would have been very difficult to handle offensively. The argument of who would win between the two isn't one that can be honestly made because they didn't play under the same rules.

True but then that is why you really can't compare 1 team from one era to another. 1977 Cowboys should be compared to teams in their own era

very true...i'm just going to enjoy their efforts as it was..

True they ranked #1 offense and defense in 1977, of course players today are bigger, faster and stronger but the competition level they faced was equal.

This is the best, most complete Cowboys team I have watched, playoffs not withstanding. But again I have only seen this team win 1 playoff game in my lifetime so you can measure the squads I've seen. That 07 team didnt have the cohesiveness of this team.
