we gonna convince our football loving friends to cut down on NFL and college games so they can watch team USA in action.
Good luck with that.
we'll continue watching our Cowboys and other teams we support, but if its team we dont support, dont watch. the World Cup in Qatar needs us.
If FIFA has any brains, they won't schedule any U.S. games on Saturdays or Sundays. Or Monday nights.

you're wrong. I will definitely watch the World Cup ,As will millions of Americans . Its the greatest tournament in sports and its not even close.
World Cup ratings will be a barren wasteland for games going up against the NFL.

we've only had a domestic league for 20 years. Its fairly new. And ! the average attendance has grown steadily in the past 10 years. The MLS averages more fans per game than the NBA and NHL. Over 20,000. The popularity is growing rapidly , unless of course you're in denial and refuse too see it.
Attendance is a poor way to measure popularity of one sports compared to the others. It is about 3 times less expensive to go to an MLS game than those other sports, not to mention they are played outdoors, so having more fans per game says absolutely nothing.

If you really want to gauge a sport's popularity in this country, look at TV ratings. And that is where soccer in this country is epic fail.

TV ratings aren't even accurate anymore. The younger the audience, the less television plays a factor.

You're allowed your own opinions. You are not, however, allowed your own facts.

Mls started in 94 . Prior to that the usa national didn't participate in tournaments because they didn't have a national team in the 70s and 80s we didn't particapate .

Depends which NFL games . You might want to check the facts. Usa vs Portugal broke records in this past World Cup as espn's most watched sporting event in its history.

I live in la and I can get a laker, Kings , or dodger ticket for far cheaper than an La Galaxy ticket right now . I don't know how you could say that I attend many sporting events and that's absolutely not true.

Oh really? So then I guess I must have imagined Pele, Franz Beckenbauer and Giorgio Chinaglia playing for the NY Cosmos back in the 70's and 80's? Ever heard of the NASL?

Mls is only 20 years old. Nasl is still around that's 2nd division soccer .

You are confusing the two versions of the NASL. The original version existed from 1968 thru 1984 and was the top level professional soccer league in the US. The current division 2 NASL didn't exist until 2009.

i was to young , but i have seen MLS grow before my own eyes and i love the league . I enjoy it very much and i don't like anyone putting it down. 64000 fans for Orlando City's first ever game, and today 43,000 fans for NYC first game at yankee stadium. I think the growth is really impressive. Just my opinion , I've heard people talk about it when i was younger , but recently since 2010 i think the popularity has really been something. In june 2014 during the world cup i went to a Hermosa beach viewing party for the USA game and there were 20k fans just to watch it on a giant screen(and this happened country wide) on the beach. I doubt this would ever have happen 20 even 10 years ago.

Ummm...no.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/maurybr...-highest-rated-ever-world-cup-match-for-espn/

How did the match rate compared to other programming for ESPN? According to The Worldwide Leader In Sports, the match is ESPN’s most-viewed program excluding NFL and college football telecasts.

Imo it's probable that a sizable proportion of that audience was made up of casual fans who would never have tuned in if there had been an NFL or NCAA game available.

Was it broadcast at the same time as 49ers-Cowboys? Or was it broadcast during the barren sports wasteland that is a summer afternoon?

BTW, as has already been pointed out, your stat is bogus. 18.2 million people watched that World Cup game. By comparison, 18.8 million watched Commanders-Cowboys this past season. Something like 33 million watched Ohio State-Oregon. (Ironically, I was at both those games. :D )

That doesn't make the stat bogus. It just means the record has been broken since it happened. And I'm going off the assumption that his stat was correct. If so, it broke ESPN's record at the time as he said and now that record has subsequently been broken.

You can choose to believe everything you read on the internet, but it is a bogus stat.

The Forbes article, which was written immediately after that game, says it was ESPN's most viewed program excluding NFL and college football telecasts. That's not a qualifier they would have put in there if it wasn't needed.
