That doesn't make the stat bogus. It just means the record has been broken since it happened. And I'm going off the assumption that his stat was correct. If so, it broke ESPN's record at the time as he said and now that record has subsequently been broken.

Why would you want to assume that when it's so easy to prove otherwise?

Was it broadcast at the same time as 49ers-Cowboys? Or was it broadcast during the barren sports wasteland that is a summer afternoon?

BTW, as has already been pointed out, your stat is bogus. 18.2 million people watched that World Cup game. By comparison, 18.8 million watched Commanders-Cowboys this past season. Something like 33 million watched Ohio State-Oregon. (Ironically, I was at both those games. :D )

You're missing out the tens of thousands of folks at single viewing party :) . There were many viewing parties with one huge jumbotron with 40-50k fans :) . Even our beloved Dallas Cowboys stadium was open for a game and several thousand fans showed up. I doubt this would happen 15-20 years ago :) .

You can choose to believe everything you read on the internet, but it is a bogus stat.

The Forbes article, which was written immediately after that game, says it was ESPN's most viewed program excluding NFL and college football telecasts. That's not a qualifier they would have put in there if it wasn't needed.

You don't have to like soccer and no ones forcing you to. But I love both football and soccer and that's why I choose to see and embrace the growth of it IN this country :) . Each their own .

Actually when they report how many viewers, I believe they are taking those things into account.

FIFA doesn't care about the U.S. because their bread basket is the rest of the world, which is good because just about no one in the U.S. will give 2 turds about the Soccer Olympics when it is going up directly against the home stretch of the NFL regular season.

ESPN must be bawlng their eyes out.

That's not true, plenty of people here love the World Cup.

Ummm...no.

Imo it's probable that a sizable proportion of that audience was made up of casual fans who would never have tuned in if there had been an NFL or NCAA game available.

Why does ESPN matter so much?

I'm fully aware that the WC is the biggest sporting event on the planet, but that isn't the question being discussed. Will Americans watch in large numbers if the matches are played opposite NFL or cfb games? Imo the answer is no.

Of course they will
