Cutting a guy we just gave a $10MM contract to was never a serious option. Not to mention, we're not cutting a guy we're relying on as a spot-starter over a DWI.

People don't really want to cut him because of this incident, anyway. He's just destined to be a whipping boy because they didn't like the signing in the first place.

Because he stunk last year. We've had a bizarre obsession with this dude for a few years.

I don't get it.

It's not a good idea to cut him.

They can keep him at 1 year, 4M or cut him at a cost of 3M.

There are team options for years 2 and 3.
Before June 1 it would be a 1m cap hit. After June 1 we actually save 1m. Hes already counting 2m against the cap. If he's cut the 1m base isn't guarantee and the 3m bonus hits all at once before June 1. So it would be a 1m cap hit. After June 1 they can spread it out and we save 1m.

Earlier today on "Talk'n Cowboys", listening to Stephen Jones talk about the situation, he didn't sound like a man inclined to cut bait with Carroll.
Yep, I got the same impression, they will see how he behaves going forward but I think they keep him thus far.

Most of the people saying that Carroll was bad are fans because they want every signing to be Ty Law in his prime.

Carroll is a decent player who signed at a decent price. He's one cog in the secondary and the team let guys go who were no better than him. They also have Scandrick, promising second year player Brown and spent two of their first three draft picks on CB's.

The secondary will be fine and cutting Carroll would only weaken the unit while throwing money away.

I swear... it is mass hysteria in here sometimes. Common sense thrown straight out the window.

I don't agree that he stunk, but I'm not a huge fan of his, either. But at least you're being straightforward and wanting to cut him because you think he sucks.

I'm just saying they won't cut him based off of a DWI arrest, given what they've invested already and given that they still need him as a stop-gap.

Carroll played poorly in 2016 after the Eagles changed their defensive system so that it emphasized more man-to-man coverage.

He played much better in 2014 and 2015 while being used in a system that was much more zone oriented.

I'm guessing the Cowboys see 2014/2015 player in that they seemingly want to become more competent in zone coverage.

Cut him and send a message.

Message sending is worthless now days....not with big contracts and guaranteed money and all of that.
It s not back like when Jimmy could do it.....there was no guaranteed money back then, nor not as much to make a difference, no salary cap hits.

Keep him and let it play out....cutting him just does not make any sense.

What I'd really like to see is some type of punishment that makes the player actually think his actions were stupid. Something like a $250K fine or some substantial portion of his check withheld for a couple of years to make sure it doesn't happen again. Subsequent fines to escalate with the money going to drunk-driving awareness programs. The check stub would show the original payment and the deduction being taken out/withheld so he could reflect on how that money would be in his bank account if he weren't so stupid. I know I'm dreaming... but I'd really like these guys to think they'd made a mistake, rather than just giving some perfunctory press release.

I know it. Philly asked too much from him and he simply didn't hold up to being asked to play like one of the best corners in the league.

He isn't.

Dallas will ask much less from him and he should more than suffice for what the team wants him to do.

Even with his poor(ish) 2016, SI.com on their list of top free agents this year said that Carroll was "the only defensive back in Philly that could cover."

Fans on here use words like awful, terrible, etc. to describe his play... and that is way off base. Was Philly ready to move on in the secondary? Yeah, just like Dallas was ready to move on from Carr and Claiborne... I get it... but Carroll is not a bad player. He's not great either though. He is what he is: A cog that can help and provide veteran leadership to the defensive backfield.

His contract is for the 2017 season when it starts, this June 1st deadline has nothing to do with this season.
That would come into play next year.
