30 for 30: Rand University

Which is why I didn't trust them even had they not made the Galloway trade. They probably would have just packaged those two #1s along with some other picks to draft Michael Vick.

Ouch.

(You're probably right)

I don't think they would have drafted Brees if they still had their original first round pick(the one they traded to Seattle). They could have, but I don't think they would have.

The Cowboys definitely wouldn't have drafted Brees in the first round. Jerry probably still would have taken Carter over Brees had they both been sitting there. Had the Cowboys had a first round pick Jerry would have screwed it up by trading down for a couple of #2's and used them on 2 more players that had 3rd and 4th round grades.

I tend to agree with this..

I disagreed with it then, and nothing has changed my mind since, if anything I am even more certain Cowboys (and other NFL teams passing up on him) made a mistake of biblical proportions. Moss was a once in a generation talent. And Aikman, Emmitt, Rocket et.al. would have been good role models for Moss. Irvin was on the team less than a season after that draft anyway.

Jerry has stated that he made a mistake by not drafting Randy Moss, during his more lucid moments. The excuses for not taking Moss is reminiscent of the Jimmy bashing, it is pure posturing at best, the height of ignorance at worst.

Jerry even admits that passing on Moss still haunts him, but every other team that passed could say the same. It's really not that hard of a decision deciding between Ellis or Moss using hindsight. Moss may have extended Aikman and Emmitts careers.

More importantly, it would have extended the championship contention period for the Cowboys. Moss was such a weapon that there was no way you could double him AND load up box to stop Emmitt. Add Rocket Ismail and Herschel (FB) to that equation and the Cowboys would have been unstoppable. Aikman would not have needed to hold the ball very long and would have put up some big numbers. Moss was the key.

Randy Moss not coming to Dallas was the work of Chan Gailey who didn't want Randy. Jerry listened to Chan and not John Garrett who according to Bryan Broaddus was standing on the table pleading for Jerry to draft Moss.

Passing on Strahan and Brackens in prior years to that draft was what created a need for a DE as opposed to a luxury at WR with Irvin still going strong in '98.

Agreed! Bypassing Brackens was stupidity incarnate. Instead Jerry wanted to trade down and take a project. Jerry so consumed by being taken seriously as a football man that he was swinging at the fences at every phantom pitch his scouts threw at him. The draft that he was only targetting back ups was even more ludicrous.

Rocket Ismail was not on the team in 1998. If they did draft Randy Moss, then they probably don't sign Ismail as a FA in 1999.

Jerry wanted a McNabb-lite, which is why he selected QC. Then again, Parcells did say Jerry doesn't have a football philosophy.

I disagree. Once we lost Irvin, it is difficult to see Jerry not signing a vet to complement Moss. Plus Rocket was a Jerry target from way back when they lost the option to take him #1 overall in draft. And everyone knows Jerry can be extremely tenacious about his pet cats.

Something overlooked in this whole Randy Moss sage is the fact the Cowboys only had 1 starting DE on the roster. Greg Ellis was considered the "safe" pick and filled a huge need at the time.

You are ignoring the timeline. Moss was drafted in 1998. Michael Irvin got hurt during the 1999 season. That means Jerry would have needed to sign Rocket prior to the 1999 season not knowing that he would lose Irvin to injury during the 1999 season. That puts Moss, Irvin and Ismail all on the same team at the same time. I don't see that happening. They probably would have still signed James McKnight as the third option for the 1999 season or matched the Panthers offer for Patrick Jeffers.

Guess we will never know what Jerry does but that he coveted Rocket is indisputable and Jerry was leaning toward a more explosive passing attack at that time, hence the hiring of Chan Gailey and his wide open offense.

Just watched Rand University. Moss wore some huge shoulder pads in high school he looked funny running down the field with those.

The logic was this, Irvin would have taught him to become great on the field and he would have given Aikman one last lift. Moss was catching everthing his rookie, all Aikman had to do was throw it up in his direction.
It is said Moss was the last spark or hope for the 90s cowboys. I think they would have went deep that year.
