They usually say enough that when you look back on it after the draft it was clear of their intentions.

Problem is sometimes they say so many different things that you don't know which one is the one to pay attention to until after the draft. :D

I never understood the need to do a pre draft press conference. Does the league mandate this? Nothing good can come from it and it's possible that someone might say something that helps other teams during the draft. I wish they would just shut their mouths about anything and everything related to the draft until after they have made their last pick. Then babble on about anything you want.

I do not think it is mandated but nearly everybody does it. It is just part of the process. What you reveal in it is up to the individual. Most of the time, teams use it as a last chance to use diversion and keep their real intentions shrouded.
