4 cornerback base defense?

Ian Rapoport is reporting the cowboys plan to play A LOT of 4 cornerback sets..maybe even as our base defense. The 4 CB set would still be in nickel packages, meaning, we'd only have 1 safety on the field.

Sounds like we are keeping Jenkins and it sounds like we plan to play him a lot.

4 cornerbacks as a base defense? Risen star may have a heart attack, lol

I wouldn't be surprised to see all four of the top corners on the field at the same time, but I'm not really sure it's going to exactly be a four-corner set.

I think it's more likely Dallas will use Scandrick more as a deep safety in that set with Sensabaugh at SS and the other three corners up on receivers.

I believe, if Dallas keeps Jenkins, there will be a lot of mixing and matching to take advantage of what we've got at corner.

I like this, I do worry about stopping the run though.

But if you've got an offense coming out in the spread with 4 WR's, then I think it's a good move.

We would get eaten alive....

2nd and long? Most 3rd downs? sure...

I could see us using more alignments with three corners and one deep safety than this, especially against teams whose base offense includes a good pass-catching tight end.

But it would all depend on whether the front seven can handle the running game without safety help.

I would not be surprised to see that be our base package, either.

This is exactly what I've been expecting. We did experiment with Scandrick in somewhat of a hybrid FS/CB role.

Yes, then it's very good. I've been in favor of this from the beginning. I think it's important to not give up how good we are at stopping the run. We've always been very good at stopping the run.

This still goes to show how important a FS is and how bad we need someone back there who can play the ball well.

I can't see going to a defense that we could only run for one year, only if no one gets hurt, as a base defense. The team needs to learn a defense they can get comfortable with for years and get better at it. Not change drastically every year.

Running this as a special package is fine, but not base defense.

Jenkins can be franchised next year if necessary. It need not be a one year deal.

:)

If true then good thing we drafted CBs that are known as hitters ;)

And we know he likes to hurt receivers. Well, at least our receivers.

Just bc we will lose Jenkins after this year doesn't mean we all of a sudden have to scrap this plan. There are other CBs that play football

Maybe. But we sure seem to have played a lot of years without 2 good ones. So putting our hopes on being able to have 4 consistently going forward seems like a bit of "wishful thinking".

Agreed. This is nonsense. It would be a wrinkle, nothing more.

Welcome to 2012. Glad you could make it. Now try to act like you belong here.

Lots of teams are coming out on first down w/3 and 4 WR sets. That's how they open the game...and that's how they win games in the 4th quarter.

Today's tight ends are often more receivers than anything else.

And one more thing:

If you play man coverage with 4 corners it allows you to put more beef in the box...because you aren't dropping your LBs into as much coverage responsibility.

You'll have to give it some thought but it's true.

I can read media guys thoughts...

Media guy: Humm, any story about the Cowboys sells (gets web page hits).

Media guy: Humm, the Cowboys appear to be overstocked in Cornerbacks.

Media guy: I think I'll write an article predicting that the Cowboys will use 4 Cornerbacks as their base defense.

Next day, Media guy: That Cowboys info that I made up is really getting the web page hits. Looks like the Mike Jenkins story is hot...how can I benefit from it? I'm thinking two 1st rounders for Jenkins...what team needs a CB?

;) I keep nitro pills just for that protection...:D

And the dynamics of those four cornerbacks on the field all at once is compelling to thought.

I agree but at the same time the only person that for the most part won't be out there would be Brodney Pool correct? You think this team is a Brodney Pool away from not getting "run over all day"?

A four CB D would usually involve having two S out there. Otherwise one of the CBs is playing safety. When we play a D of this sort, we generally would go with a 4 man DL and a middle LB. So instead of a front 7, we'd have a front 5.

If you are talking about 4 DBs with one S, that's just the nickel D with Scandrick playing S. Again, you lose an LB in that set, so even there you would get run over all day as you'd have only 6 DL/LB out there.

I don't like the $ CBs as the base. What will the DL or LBs look like. 4 cbs and 1 safety, then you will go 3-3 up front or 4-2.
I don't think we have big enough DL to play 3-3. Ware and Spencer might have their hands on the ground alot more this year with Lee and Carter playing the 2LBs

Who needs corners and safeties? I say put 11 men on that defensive line.

/Did i get it right RS?
