4 teams including champs had "high interest" in Hitchens

The mission to make Anthony Hitchens appear to be a coveted prospect about to be selected as the Cowboys drafted him has begun.

I don't care. He was a massive reach in the 4th round and a horrible selection.

And for all the supporters, show me where you said anything positive about the player pre-draft. Otherwise you're just cheerleading for the team.

Cheerleading for the team... You mean something like a fan?

Who says Dallas was drafting a "back up"?

I want to know how someone can expect a 4th rounder to come in and start. All those guys are trying to make the team, provide depth, and play STs until they improve enough to beat out the starter.

He was specifically taken as a back up/insurance policy for Lee from the Cowboys. I don't think that's a smart way to draft.

TB

I don't think Spag and BTB are lying! I still am not excited about the pick however!

heh, i saw a lot more excitement with our comp picks than anyone ever gave this one. for the most part.

where did i see excitement? well, from people who watched iowa consistently and saw the kid play week in and week out. they were pumped.

my issue with rankings is we, the common fan, tend to bible it as the law and it gives us our own way of perceiving value. we have to have something, right? i mean, how else will we know where a kid like jernigan should fall? when we overpay for a player? where a player *should* be taken?

we have to have SOMETHING, right?

unfortunately, this is it.

however, i've come to find i'm one of the more uneducated fans out there cause terms like 3 technique, 5 technique, SAM, WILL and so forth confuse me. i have to ask questions or go look it up. but ya know what? i do. then i have to figure out which player is better suited to fit in a type of defense being built. do i? not really. i'm not *that* into it all. but i do understand better about why a player rated 15 spots below another player may be valued more highly in a given defense because of *how* that player will be used. there may be 3 other players at that position rated higher, but what was used to measure where they should fall?

a generic overall talent board that's GOT to be all encompassing and if we take a player too far down, we humped the dumpty?

95% of my ignore list will do this any chance they get. they will also not admit they'd have taken a player in the 4th that wasn't drafted at all and "oops, i could be wrong".

all that aside, there simply isn't 1 list that we can all go by that will tell us what any 1 team out of 32 will do or what they need or what they value or why they need/value it. so using said list as your reasoning of defense is kinda pointless to me cause it says you're not digging deeper into the how's and why's of the system.

then again, unfortunately the cowboys *have* given over a decade of ammo to people who simply refuse to put any faith in them at all anymore. they point to mid round picks being reaches and well, they are. there's a big reason why we don't have 12 rounds anymore. but let's look at the cowboys 4th round picks for the last several years.

bw webb - jury out.
kyle wilber - came late to a dying 3-4 party. was a 3-4 round projected player. looks like he's fading.
matt johnson - makes sean lee look invulnerable. as for draft projections, mr fantastic would have a hard time justifying this reach. still a ??? but can easily see the frustration on many levels by many fans.
david arkin - well he's gone but he was taken around where said gospel predicted in some areas. still playing in the nfl however.
Akwasi Owusu-Ansah - say that 3 times real fast. given the gospel, not a bad pick and a tad of a steal. but gone.

man, this is fun isn't it??? bashing us for silly 4th round picks that flop.

pittsburg.
shamarko thomas - SS - about where he was said to be picked. started 2 games.
landry jones - QB - ditto, except hasn't started yet so still holding the old clipboard.
alamenda ta'amu - damn. already a cardinal.
cortez allen - right spot. seems to be trending up a bit in games started.
thaddeus gibson - holy stickers on travel trunk batman! 26 and 5 teams already. but hey, they got a steal cause the bible said 2nd round projections, so getting him in the 4th must have made the gospel reading fans moist. but, out of the league so everyone got this wrong.

get my point? we can't say the cowboys suck at 4th round picks w/o looking at other teams success / failures then comparing them to the single most important document the casual fan can ever have. yet it turns out to be the single most dangerous also.

so while it sucks to be playoffless for so long and it sucks to wade through the incompetence of the jones's, it's not like we're the only team to ever fail or reach or even get steals that simply don't pan out in the draft. it does suck people use singular sources of information as the path to victory without taking the time to understand that path may not be the way the team is going.

"but they SHOULD go that way".

ladies and gentlemen, i give you - thaddeus thomas.

good day.

That's only because they don't expect Sean Lee who just got a new big contract to get beat out by a rookie 4th round pick. They do think he has the talent to be taken that high. Your argument is ridiculous.

I'm sure glad they aren't anointing him a starter before camp even begins. He has to come in and compete and earn any spot he has on the team, if at all. You can have high hopes, but you don't need to put unnecessary labels on any pick this early.

Do you have any understanding that if they drafted the highest rb available in the 4th guess what - Backup
highest WR at that spot guess what - Backup
highest OT at that spot you probably guest it by now - Backup

That was what they want from him this year. This is not like them drafting Scifres in the second round and expecting him to never start like the drafting for backups debacle in the late 90s. Just because they expect him to backup that doesn't mean they never seem him competing or progressing.

Quite the contrary as Garrett in the draft presser said, "we see him being able to come in and compete immediately, hard hitting, we see him as a mike linebacker first. he was very productive there and we also see him as having some position flex and an ability to come in and help on special teams."

we see him able to come in and compete immediately.

the people upset about this are also quick to call sean lee "glass".

the irony makes me giggle like a little school girl.

Specifically picking back ups is not smart. They said they picked him to be a back up, those you mentioned above likely would be expected to compete for a spot. This guy was picked to be a backup! That's my issue.

I never said Sean Lee was glass. Projecting what others have said to discredit my argument makes me rofl, not just giggle.

And
Jones says Iowa LB Hitchens is insurance for Sean Lee injury, didn't mind using fourth-round pick for backup

Well tell you this....if they think if Sean Lee goes down that this guy can come in and be "insurance" for him? That's not a backup your drafting. You're drafting a guy you think can come in and do a good job of taking Sean Lee's role while he's hurt. That's far more than a special teams/backup player.
