49ers and Rams getting in on the Romo sweepstakes?

If the market for Romo is growing, why would that result in his release as opposed to a trade?
The more people who need your services, the greater flexibility and options you have. If the Rams, 49ers, Bears, Broncos and Texans are allegedly vying for Romo's services, a trade comes into play in a major way.

As an aside, by the draft half the teams in the league will be interested in Romo.

If Tony does restructure to facilitate a trade does it do anything for our cap?

Tony's contract is great for the team that wants to acquire him.

There is no money guaranteed and his salary is only $14 million for 2017 and 19.5 million for 2018. I think his salary is guaranteed after the first game but thats true whether he restructures or not.

The only way I can see to benefit the Cowboys cap is if Romo gave back money but I'm not sure if thats ever been done and even if Tony was willing, I suspect the players association would be up in arms

Here's a hypothetical:

Tony would go to Houston, they have offered a 5th

49er's come out of nowhere and offers a 2nd

Does the team accomodate Tony and take the 5th rounder from a team he likes or does the team jump on the niners offer?

I say the team shows Tony appreciation and takes the Houston offer.
I would take the second, I love Tony, but I love the Cowboys more.

SF is just another team Romo isn't going to end up on. They were 2-14 last season, they're a ways off and need to build with a young QB. Romo needs a GOOD team that has a chance next season. SF is more than a QB away.

You're going to be dead wrong! Romo's chances of ending up with the Rams are about as bad as ending up in Cleveland. Goff got sacked 26 times in only 7 starts and Gurley only averaged 3.2 a carry behind the Rams OL that has real issues with pass protection and run blocking. Romo would get killed behind that OL. The Rams are a long way off from being a playoff contender much less a SB contender. They were dead last in offense and although their defense is pretty good, Romo would never survive behind their OL. The Rams have to play Goff next season and pray he he gets better with the investment the organization made in him. They can't afford to have hm sit until Romo gets knocked out. Hope some of you don't spend a lot of time in Vegas.
No, it's not.
No one wants to live in CLE, Romo likes Hollywood.
Rams aren't contenders yet but neither was DAL last year this time.
Re-tool OL at a couple spots, add a WR and add Romo... that's not a bad plan.
Goff just wasn't ready and the offense wasn't ready for him.
But Gurley, Austin, Romo is a solid threesome.
Rams have 20m in cap space to play with before any finagling.
A couple OL and Romo should fit neatly into that.

Issue of course is Rams already lack R1 pick so likely won;t give up any pick of real value. Might be the dreaded conditional pick where we get a guaranteed 5th that can escalate to a 2nd/3rd based on Romo starts and Rams wins.

In one breath the writer is saying there is a market for Romo and in another saying he will be released not traded. Seems dumb.

That being said, Romo for Aaron Donald it is!
Romo for Robert Quinn. Someone convince Wade he would make a terrible 3-4 OLB.

Apparently they are interested in him as well. Consider the source but could be interesting if true. it only takes an extra team to create a trade market.....

More good news. I've said it before this is going to be a strange offseason, lots of hard choices to make, not everyone is going to like them, of course and I understand that. I'm sure I will question some moves we make...but I'm in this for the long run.

He would be a FA if released, no team can "claim" him.

When a player is released I thought there is a Waiver list and for a short while teams can put a claim in. Is that not the case in the offseason?

Romo liking Hollywood isn't going to cause him to want to end his career on his back playing for a 2-14 team that has no OL. The Cowboys weren't contenders in 2015 because we didn't have a QB but the Rams are more than a QB away. They don't have NEAR the OL the Cowboys have or a security blanket for Romo like a Jason Witten. Goff was supposed to be the most NFL ready QB in last years draft and looks like he may never be ready. His confidence is being destroyed behind the Rams OL. Romo wouldn't survive behind that OL. He's not ending up with the Rams. Going to a bad team would practically guarantee his career ending on a sour note.

exactly. If it gets to a point where a team offers a 1st and a 3rd, screw where he wants to go, and this is coming from a Romo fan.

All Tony has to do is retire and you can stuff that 1 & 3 while eating all his cap hit. Stick to being a fan.

What would drive his value up and make him more appealing is having a team lose their starter. We can't afford to hold onto Romo until training camp/preseason hoping a team loses their starting QB. Everyone is aware of Romo's injury history and any team that may be interested in him has to take a good look at their OL. If a team doesn't have a solid OL Romo will have little chance of making it past mid season.

I agree, a Minnesota type situation would be ideal. I dont think that will be the case though. Someone will flinch and we will bag a draft pick because of it.

Anyone dreaming of a Herschel Walker type trade for a soon to be 37 year old, injury prone QB are living in a complete fantasy world. If we bag a draft pick/player or any type of trade it's going to have to benefit Romo or he won't agree to it and it's going to have to benefit the Cowboys more than spreading $19.6M over 2 years if they release him. What makes trading Romo difficult is he has to agree to it and the compensation has to be worth it which is why the odds favor him being released.

If you listen to Garrett's combine presser he said that whatever the Cowboys do will be in the best interest of the team AND in the best interest of Tony.

The Rams would be very interesting with Romo. They have killer talent everywhere except WR and I think Romo would be able to get the most out of those guys.
