1) Penalties almost knocked in half (8)

2) Dallas has yet to promote Tyler Smith to the starting job at left guard. But, again, it’s only a matter of time.

3) Nahshon Wright has had strong off season & start to training camp. But Wright has struggled in games. He had an interference penalty & gave up a number of big plays against the Broncos last week. It was more of the same against the Chargers w/the biggest disappointment being an interference flag on 3rd & 17 in the second quarter on a pass that was 3 yards short of the first down.

4) Jalen Tolbert continues to experience growing pains at receiver. He had a crucial drop in the preseason opener against the Broncos. Last night, he didn’t come up w/a contested catch in the first quarter. And he nullified a TD catch from Rush in the second quarter when he didn’t get both feet in bounds in the back of the end zone. He had plenty of room to make the play.

5) One player who has been noticeable since the start of camp & who is going to make the cuts at DT tougher than expected is Trysten Hill. He's clearly healthy & more comfortable than he’s ever been. And it’s showing up in practice and games. He had a sack & forced fumble that led to a TD in the second quarter last night.

Twas nice to see the Cowboys playing with more energy on defense. Their offense is gradually starting to click. They're making progress. Jalen Tolbert is experiencing the growing pains that comes with his professional introduction. He'll improve, as additional exposure allows. He's off to a good start, even though his early attempts last week were fairly inconsistent. It just takes time.

It was a real pleasure to see Tristen Hill finally displaying the heady play that we've longed to see him perform. That aggressive sack and his forced fumble recovery was a welcomed sight to behold. Let's hope he continues that great play vs. the Seahawks next week. Good stuff. It's been a long time coming. Hopefully, it might prove to be well worth the wait. Nice to see him smiling on the sideline after a good night's work.

Here's also a tip of the hat to Daron Bland for being such a magnificent (and consistent) surprise throughout camp and the preseason games thus far. He's obviously heading for a date with the Cowboys' roster if he manages to keep it up. It's beyond encouraging to see such an impressive showing from such an up-and-coming young rookie in the secondary. I'm hoping they'll make room for him on the roster. :)

ONLY reason Wright makes this team is the front office not wanting to admit how ridiculous it was to draft him in the 3rd round. He is flat out awful.
Looks like Quinn was behind that pick. Fits the mold he likes in corners.

Aside from Turpin's pyrotechnics Hill's play was the highlight of the game for me.. If for no other reason than so many on this board are rooting for him to fail apparently because they hate Rod Marinelli that much. I know people will hone in on the hat trick play (sack, forced fumble, fumble recovery) I was at least as impressed at his refusal to be moved out of the hole on run plays when doubled and his consistently beating his man when singled. Nashon Wright had another rough outing but it was good to see Joseph make a few nice plays. That kid may have turned the corner...

The 3rd and 17 penalty is what wins and loses games. They went down and scored a TD instead of forcing a punt.

He could’ve stood behind the receiver and made the tackle 3 yards short of the first down.

I think he’s going to be released.

Diggs, Brown, Lewis, Bland, Joseph and Goodwin. Going 7 deep at corner would be a mistake as we likely will go heavy at WR, RB, TE or safety

My own…

1. I thought Tyler Smith was impressive last night. He was definitely moving bodies. I think the only reason he isn’t starting is because they are trying to figure out what they have in McGovern.

2. Josh Ball is still a mess. It’s fine if we hang onto him another season on IR or practice squad to try and develop, but the ideas of him serving as the swing tackle is lunacy.

3. Beyond the INT, I really like what I saw from Israel Mukuama in the run game. He’s really improved his physicality.

4. Farniok has turned himself into a valuable swing OG and C.

5. Nashon Wright is who I thought he was; a guy that had no business being drafted in the 3rd round.

6. Not down on Sam Williams though I think he had a tougher game this week, but he’s got to learn to get his hands up. There were two plays where the pass went right over his head and he didn’t even throw a hand up to at least visually disrupt the passing window.

Agreed with all of this. #2 is especially notable. If we go into the season with Josh Ball as our swing tackle, we should all boycott the Cowboys, until the Jones sell the team. Seriously, it would be managerial negligence. The first Oline that we had in the game looked good last night, except for Ball, he looked lost and hopeless.

He doesn't toe tap like Gallup yet, but I do don't think he gets faulted too much for a "nullified" TD catch. Was it because of where he ran his route, was he lead there, or both? I did not watch with that in mind

He spent the offseason working out other NFL current and former players.......

Spot on.

1. They may not have formally announced him as the starter but they will. He did start last night although they had McGovern starting as well. But Smith does things as a rookie that McGovern will never be able to do. You live with the growing pains IMO.

2. Yes, the tackles are pretty much awful. The experiment should be over. Get an old vet in here now. I get that this is really the first game action Ball has had in 2 years, but he has a long way to go.

3. Mukuama was all over the place in both the run and pass game. I think he is clearly ahead of Bell but think we keep Bell too. Can special teams do without Goodwin?

4. Farniok had a couple really nice, physical blocks and got to the second level. Maybe the best thing about him is you don't notice when he is in the game. He just is quietly effective. He, Smith and McGovern dominated the interior line last night.

5. Wright always seems to be in the receiver's hip pocket but never makes the play. He also stood around watching on several plays where he shoukd have been in on a tackle. Joseph started out rough but then settled in and made some plays. I thought Bland didn't have the best night. There seemed to be several guys getting some decent action late in the game that I didn't recognize.

6. Williams has natural ability but I think he isthe kind that will make a huge jump in year 2 and likely will be a designated pass rusher.

Finally, it was awesome seeing our second and third string guys playing and looking the part of NFL players. It honestly is the first time in years....what was the stat last night, first preseason road win in a decade? That is eye opening.

And Turpin? It was great to see him do that in the NFL. As a returner, he is completely different in how he attacks the defense. There isn't hesitation. He will change games. With his size, I worry about him getting hurt with too much action. He is too valuable as a returner to risk him very much on offense.

He's pretty good on Special teams. He might make it based on that but won't based on what he does on defense.

I agree. Hill has CLEARLY matured in many ways and is coming into his own. The light came on. Many cant understand how difficult it is in the NFL to cause a strip-sack fumble-recovery. Its a trifecta. Very hard, especially from the DT position. Hill gets an A+ for his awareness and degree of difficulty. In real games, those little things are momentum changers. I feel we need 2 trade someone now because we are so deep at dline. Ridge might actually be a surprise cut. He been trash in these first 2 games. He made the team last night. Dude has been paying attention in film study.

Kelvin Joseph is on the bubble guys. Yeah I said it. Dude hasnt moved the needle. He looks like he is unsure still. He is a half step behind all the time. He may get cut. Bland didn't have a great game, but he wasn't awful either. Bell is THAT DUDE. He will make the 53 and we will say bye to D.Wilson. I hate that because DW is my guy, but he hasn't had a good camp. Bell been very steady, when he tackles or hits ya, you drop. Israel M had a great game and decent camp. I think he might be trade bait. We are deep at safety.
