The 3rd and 17 penalty is what wins and loses games. They went down and scored a TD instead of forcing a punt.

He could’ve stood behind the receiver and made the tackle 3 yards short of the first down.

I think he’s going to be released.

Diggs, Brown, Lewis, Bland, Joseph and Goodwin. Going 7 deep at corner would be a mistake as we likely will go heavy at WR, RB, TE or safety
That third down penalty and making business decision not even to attempt tackle in the Touchdown screen play are alone the reasons for this guy be shown the door. But I am sure the team is not going to admit that they are wrong

My own…

1. I thought Tyler Smith was impressive last night. He was definitely moving bodies. I think the only reason he isn’t starting is because they are trying to figure out what they have in McGovern.

2. Josh Ball is still a mess. It’s fine if we hang onto him another season on IR or practice squad to try and develop, but the ideas of him serving as the swing tackle is lunacy.

3. Beyond the INT, I really like what I saw from Israel Mukuama in the run game. He’s really improved his physicality.

4. Farniok has turned himself into a valuable swing OG and C.

5. Nashon Wright is who I thought he was; a guy that had no business being drafted in the 3rd round.

6. Not down on Sam Williams though I think he had a tougher game this week, but he’s got to learn to get his hands up. There were two plays where the pass went right over his head and he didn’t even throw a hand up to at least visually disrupt the passing window.

Agree on Smith. He still has some things to work on but you can clearly see the talent. I think with more reps he'll clean up some of the sloppiness.

Ball blows. The fact Jerry and Stephen can't see it is hilariouos. I swear, if they think that they can just move Tyler Smith to LT in a pinch, oy vey.

Wright. LOL. We had beat writers penciling him in as a lock at CB but throwing Joseph into the abyss. This is not a defense of Joseph, who hasn't been all that good himself, but the idea that Wright is a better CB was laughable.

Just food for thought.
The price tag difference between D.Wilson and M.Hooker, may lead to Hooker being cut. Especially since, a certain someone, just found out the cap is a real thing.

Hooker just inked 1 year deal he isn’t going anywhere except maybe injured list

I’m ok with cowboys moving on from wright if there is a need in order to keep bell

1) Penalties almost knocked in half (8)

2) Dallas has yet to promote Tyler Smith to the starting job at left guard. But, again, it’s only a matter of time.

3) Nahshon Wright has had strong off season & start to training camp. But Wright has struggled in games. He had an interference penalty & gave up a number of big plays against the Broncos last week. It was more of the same against the Chargers w/the biggest disappointment being an interference flag on 3rd & 17 in the second quarter on a pass that was 3 yards short of the first down.

4) Jalen Tolbert continues to experience growing pains at receiver. He had a crucial drop in the preseason opener against the Broncos. Last night, he didn’t come up w/a contested catch in the first quarter. And he nullified a TD catch from Rush in the second quarter when he didn’t get both feet in bounds in the back of the end zone. He had plenty of room to make the play.

5) One player who has been noticeable since the start of camp & who is going to make the cuts at DT tougher than expected is Trysten Hill. He's clearly healthy & more comfortable than he’s ever been. And it’s showing up in practice and games. He had a sack & forced fumble that led to a TD in the second quarter last night.

It is starting to seem like they wanted Tyler at backup so he could continue to get all of these valuable reps that he so desperately needs. I won't be surprised if he starts next game so he gets some reps with the ones and shuts it down.

I don't see a lot wrong with what Nashawn had done at CB. He has had great coverage just been a tick late. Yesterday, on the big catch against him, the WR pushed off and it wasn't called. I think he still makes the team but it will be interesting.

Tolbert hasn't been great and this was what i was afraid of with him. Nothing really remarkable that he does...sometimes that doesn't translate to the pros. We will see but I am much higher on Ferguson than i am Tolbert at this stage.

Nice write up!
I am encouraged by the drop in penalties, we absolutely have to address this issue.

I don't want to overreact to one game. But I do see a couple of trends emerging.

Ball is still learning. He messes up too much right now but it is his first game experience since being drafted. I would not give up on him just yet. His run blocking is better than his pass protection. Let's see if he shows any improvement as the season progresses.

Farniok is better than Biadasz. Every game he plays I watch him and he just looks like he is better at moving people off the LOS when he plays. Perhaps some of the nuances of playing Center he has not mastered yet, but just in terms of pure blocking, I think he is better. Not great, but better than Biadasz. He looks bigger, stronger and more active than Biadasz.

The young guys are going to make mistakes. Up one week, down another. Bland looked good last week, not so good this week. He does play with excitement which is a big plus but he needs time too. The starting CBs are Diggs, Lewis and Brown and I think the Cowboys have solid backups in Joseph and Bland if anyone gets hurt. The more experience these two get in preseason the better players they will become. I think Wright is okay in the right defensive scheme. But yeah, not a 3rd round pick.

The Cowboys have some talent at Safety for a change. This will make a big difference against the run.

Jabril Cox is another player who looks really good on one play then misses on another. I think he is up more than down and he will be a good player as he gains experience. He has a lot of speed.

I like where the Cowboys DTs are this year. It looks like they have some talent inside for a change. Bohanna looks like he has made a big leap forward this season. Hill just needs to stay healthy. I think their starting defense, once they are all on the field is going to be pretty good.

The Cowboys look like they might have a pretty good running game this year. I don't know what they will look like against the Eagles DL, or the Washington DL but they look pretty good against the two scrub squads they played the last two weeks.

The Cowboys WRs look really average to me. I know there is no CeeDee, but some of these guys are going to be playing week 1 against NFL starters and they look pretty average against scrubs so it does concern me. Of course Rush is not Dak.

Farnk is better than Biadasz?.

Stats say otherwise.

1200 snaps. 0 sacks.

Wright is horrendous playing the ball. He’s going to make the team because they’ll carry 6-7 CBS, but all this talk about how good he’s been and is better than Joseph was a bit silly.

An embarrassment of riches at two positions that used to be considered the weakest a few seasons ago, DT and safety.

Heck, I’d go a step further.

Look at the defense now compared to a few years ago. No more getting embarrassed by having guys like Daryl Worley and Darian Thompson are your starters.

ONLY reason Wright makes this team is the front office not wanting to admit how ridiculous it was to draft him in the 3rd round. He is flat out awful.
If you thought he was worth a 3rd rounder last year...its stupid to cut him a year after.....that's my stance....I can cut a 6th rounder....but I liked a guy so much that I had a 3rd round grade on him? He experienced some growing pains and has had a great camp but now I want to cut him? Makes no sense.

Kelvin Joseph is on the bubble guys. Yeah I said it. Dude hasnt moved the needle. He looks like he is unsure still. He is a half step behind all the time. He may get cut. Bland didn't have a great game, but he wasn't awful either. Bell is THAT DUDE. He will make the 53 and we will say bye to D.Wilson. I hate that because DW is my guy, but he hasn't had a good camp. Bell been very steady, when he tackles or hits ya, you drop. Israel M had a great game and decent camp. I think he might be trade bait. We are deep at safety.
Same thing applies to Joseph. IF you liked him enough last year with a 2nd round grade than you should still like him a year later. Now if you want to say you want to cut him because of the personal issues? That I can understand. But he's not getting cut because he's struggling at corner.

And for those wanting Joseph cut or thinks this team thinks low of him...notice the corners he guards and notice who they let the other young corners guard. Was Joseph not on the Chargers best receiver last night?
