I can honestly say I only ate at one of those - Sambo's.

Same here.

That must have been about 1970.

In that end of town we had Sambo's, McD's and the Red Barn (northeast chicken chain) and across the street an Arthur Treacher's Fish'n'chips.

Sambo's didn't last long. Arthur Treacher's didn't either. Today the Sambo's location is a Friendly's.

McDonalds should be on there...

LOL!

I get it... But McD's... Well the chain is iconic. Gotta hand it to Ray Kroc for developing the franchise system behind it.

I work with business owners all the time that have 4-year/6-year degrees and run businesses that are doing less than a mill and have all sorts of business issues– including the owner being scared to death to take any time off.

And here you have McD's, each typically run by teenagers and the elderly– And doing a couple mill per year.

As a business guy I applaud that.

As far as the food goes, when you combine price with taste, expectations and consistency– My gosh McD's is tough to beat. Can I get a better burger? You bet! But I'm going to pay more for it... Sometimes a lot more. And many time the burgers at the other chains "change".

Not at McD's. It's the same tasting burger as what I had as a kid in late 60's.

Give me a couple cheeseburgers and fries... And I'm a happy camper and I've spent what? I dunno... $4.

And the fries?

No one has beaten McD's fries IMO.

And let me say I think the Egg McMuffin is the perfect breakfast sandwich... Hand's down.

So while McD's had taken their lumps over the years–There's a lot of redeeming things about the chain and its food.

Same here with Sambo's. I went there as a kid so that had to have lasted through the mid-70's. I even had a stuffed tiger from that place.

Roy Rogers had the best Roast Beef and Chicken

There are still Roy Rodgers around ( I thought they were gone too). I know there is one at MD/DEL border; but was a stop n go type of place, not the old classic Roy Rodgers set up. Their cornbread was great too back in the 90s, now they had honey biscuits.:(

I remember Sambo's, but I never saw any in the Dallas / Fort Worth area. I only saw them on road trips to and from the west coast / Las Vegas.

One that is missing that used to be in the Dallas / Fort Worth area was Dell Taco. Though after a quick Google search, they still exist!

Mazzio's Pizza was another, but they went and came back then went again and it seems are back again. When they left the first time they were great. The revivel of them sucked! I have no idea what they are like now.

Sounds like you've read the Ray Kroc story. :) It's a very good story and there is a lot to learn there. He basically invented the idea of simplify the job's proceedures so even a monkey could perform it. (you didn't need smart people and therefore kept your labor overhead down) Make the proceedures create a consistent product (that was absolute key) That's why a lot of restaurants fail. They food taste and quality isn't consistent. If the food taste different everytime you go, you will stop going. If it's the exact same everytime, the consumer always knows what he is going to get and will go back expecting that same taste and quality.

Yes I have. :)

No McD's isn't the best tasting food, but it's decent food for a reasonable amount of money and no matter where I go in the US it's going to taste the same.

And you're right, consistency when it comes to not just food, but the entire dining experience is absolutely critical when it comes to success.

Being able to claim you have the best food is no championship belt if you can't make it and deliver it consistently.

Wasn't Grandy's slogan "Fast food that doesnt' taste fast!" or something?

I was going to add Shakey's Pizza to the list, but they also apparently still existing, primarily in California.

Sambos had great chili and burger chef had great shakes.

Mcds has best fries when hot and fresh but are the worst when when they are not.

Too bad Kroc could not get his workers to get orders right over 20% of the time.

Does Arthur Treachers still exist? I haven't seen one in 20 years.
