The end result is the same: a team that annually has no shot at winning a SB.
Well that's where I disagree I guess. I tend to think this team has consistently been close to being a serious contender. Some think the wheels are perpetually falling off. It has nothing to do with being a homer or unrealistic. Each of the last three years, Dallas has basically been a couple of plays away from being in the playoffs, and then who knows. The bottom-dwellers that people think the Cowboys are on the same tier as are nowhere near that point.

And I don't buy the whole financial argument. The Jags didn't take Blaine Gabbert b/c they don't have money, same thing with the Browns and Weeden or the Skins signing Haynesworth. Most every team makes bad decisions, regardless of their financial resources.

Those teams have such a disadvantage compared to Jones financially, they're not on the same playing field. Similarly, many of those teams had egomaniacs who wanted to run teams they had amply proven they couldn't, but they lacked $500M a year in revenue to help buy themselves out of bad decisions. A lot of people don't consider that a huge bonus check is a minor inconvenience to Jones, but to say, the Bills, they can't afford to do it very often and it ruins their year if they fail. That the Cowboys have been .500 instead of .300 is hardly consolation. The end result is the same: a team that annually has no shot at winning a SB.

Even with that, the jig is about up for Jones. The talent acquired when Parcells was here is mostly gone. The Cowboys have a QB in decline, a HOF TE on his last legs, and a HOF pass rusher with a bad back. The abundance of scrub draft picks the last several years is about to catch up to them. We're about to re-enter the Campo years.

Sadly I think you're right. The Romo years have been wasted.

Really? He brought in Garrett to be a coach in waiting as an inexperienced OC and then HC 7 years ago. He still does the GM work...allegedly with Garrett. He still had his core...Romo, Ware, Witten, etc. Everything else is shuffling chairs on the deck of the Titanic. His get tough talk and "changes" were all made as smoke screens while the real issues remained....himself, Garrett and those at the top.
One of the best post ever. SPOT ON.

Except the 2 big ones... Coach and QB.

Hmmmmmmmmmm
JG should have been fired, sure, and I probably know your answer, but why on earth would anyone in their right mind have tried to replace Tony at any point in the last couple of years?

Luckily we have Romo or we would already be there. In fact, the Campo years may feel like the glory years compared to what we are about to enter to unless Jerry takes a good look in the mirror and see that he is the problem.

It sucks now, but once you get the right system in place, turnaround times are much shorter than they were back in the 1990s.

What 'system' are you referring to?

The one where he and Stephen have saddled this team with Garrett..?

Or the one where we make a $100 mil+ investment in our QB with two playoff appearances that were an embarrassment?

Or the one where Jones has ripped off all Cowboy fans with sub-par performances for soon to be 2 decades?

Which system in your opinion is going to save us?

I'm offering commentary on turnaround times. I'm not assessing the efficacy of the Cowboys system, whatever it may be.

Sounds like somebody should let Jerry know the definition of insanity!

Btw, Romo started close to a year without Garrett at all. He saved the season of Parcells. Without Garrett, he was lighting up practices.

I'm stunned this team ever won anything with Jerry Jones as owner/GM.

Seriously...how can Jerry look in the mirror and not realize that he is the problem?

I just want to see this team win a SB before I whither into dust.

I am lucky, I saw all the superbowls live (from TV) except the first one. I miss my superbowls.

I'm not going to sit here and say Jerry is a great GM. He's not.

But I always have a problem with the notion that he's not willing to change or whatever. He's changed his approach to the draft and FA a number of different times, almost on a year by year basis, trying to find stuff that works. He's mixed flashy guys like Dez in early rounds with guys like Fred. He's spent big on Carr and tried to find deals on guys like Bernadeaux. Jerry tries to find things that will push this franchise to the next level, and keeping around perennial pro bowlers like Witten and Ware and to some extent Romo is the same thing every GM would do.

But he doesnt do the one thing he needs to do:
Hire a football guy to run the show. Tell the new guy that he alone picks the head coach. And the head coach then chooses his assistants. Tell the new football guy he decides what is best for the team. If it means moving on from Romo and re-building, then thats the way it is. Tell this new guy that he has 5 years to make significant progress with this organization and nobody will hear from Jerry Jones.

This new "football guy" would accomplish more in 5 years than Jerry has accomplished in the last 15.

Uh, how old are you? All you have to do is last longer than the current GM by 3-4 years, my fellow fan, and you will see your next SB trophy. If not, I will refund you your 3-4 years back, plus interest.

That is making the dangerous assumption that Stephen is any different.

Yeah, I took that into consideration too, but I think Stephen will see the error of his father's ways and hire a real GM, or at the very least, seek the opinions of a talented player evaluator and not the likes of Larry Lacewell (ouch). Of course, I would not be the least bit surprised if Jerry has a clause in his will that prohibits relinquishing any General Manager duties to anyone outside of the Jones family tree.
