A complete receiver makeover?

The Deonte Thompson signing replaces Brice Butler, but are we witnessing a far bigger receiver turnover in the works?

Dallas' strong pursuit of Sammy Watkins, I believe, was to replace Dez Bryant, not complement him. And I think the latter still sounds likely after June 1st. Adding a receiver like Allen Hurns, combined with drafting Calvin Ridley or Christian Kirk....and I think Dez better get his bags packed. They seem to be TRYING to replace him.

Ryan Switzer and Cole Beasley are somewhat redundant. Switzer returns punts, is cheaper, and is more sturdily built. Bye, Cole?

We could conceivably see a starting receiving group next year comprised of something like Ridley, Hurns, Switzer, and Thompson. The Dez/Cole/TWill/Butler experiment could be over in its entirety.

It seems they believe their receiving corps and grown too stale, and perhaps too content.
Switzee is faster than Cole too. That should help against bracket coverage.

FWIW, given what we are learning about Dez working out in the offseason, I am not sure he Cowboys are likely to move on from him this year.

I think you’re right. Bringing in Lal and having Dez work outside the team on his routes seems like it’s probably intentional.

I wish we really knew what went down last season with the offensive personnel and with the WR group. There was some significant internal struggle there. And Dez was reportedly was close with Dooley at one point.

We generally have what I think is a stable and functional staff in Dallas under Garrett. But like the stuff with Callahan that bubbles up a few years ago, something went down with Linehan last year, and we’re not being told what.

If this team is dependent on any rookie WR in this draft, this season is done. Sammy Watkins was considered the best WR in his draft, and a lot better than any WR in this draft, and has yet to prove that he is a #1WR.

I do think we will see a turnover of the WR corps and TE but in 2019, not this season. The stage of development of the QB and possible regression dictates that they keep the familiarity of the receiving corps this season. Don't have a clue how this will play out but too many changes and that #1 need in 2019 will be QB.

Did Beasley, Bryant and Williams all regress in 2017? Not saying it was the QB either but that is how it appears. Can't really point out the problem except to see there is one. And one problem I did see was that the Cowboys offensive coaching staff was playing 2016 ball while the DC's were playing 2017 ball. These coaches have been around far too long to think defenses are going to let you do what you did last season. This offense is not talented enough to just line up and beat them.

So you're saying replace everyone because the QB cant throw to them?

Its not complicated.

If the Cowboys cut Dez and think relying on Allen Hurns or some rookie will improve this offense? Good luck with that. Welcome to 6-10. Its moronic.

The plan was to get Dak more help this offseason.

That included getting more depth on the offensive line.
Getting BETTER at wide receiver.
Replacing Alfred Morris.

Now with the draft they may be can replace Alfred Morris with a change of pace back or go with Rod Smith. I'm not too concerned with that position.
But there is nothing in free agency or even the draft that will immediately improve this secondary if you get rid of Dez. In addition to compliment Dez? MAYBE.
And offensive line....good luck. I guess you can pray you find another Zach Martin and Fredericks......good luck with that. It better not be with that 19th pick though when you have as many holes as you do.

You would have to get a replacement in the draft because FA money is just stupid. Lets face it, Dez and Demaryius Thomas got 15 mill deals coming off great seasons. Watkins gets a 16 mill deal coming off 2 different teams who did not want him with marginal WR1 numbers!

Outside the box thinking:

- Keep Dez
- Sign Hurn
- Trade Beasley
- Draft a WR in 2nd/3rd round

Then you have Bryant, Hurns, Thompson, Switzer, Brown and then a guy like Chark/St. Brown?

I could live with that.

The beauty there is that you aren't tied up long term with most of these guys and if this fails, you can remake again next year. Even Bryant carries a much lower dead money hit if he struggles again this year.

I could live with that too. I wonder what kind of contract it would take to get Hurns.

Pretty much said the same thing in another thread.......the WR unit is under siege. I'm guessing we could see an entirely new starting group by the start of 2019. Just as they gutted the secondary last year, we about to see 2.0 with WR unit IMO.

This off season will light a fire in Dez. He'll make the pro bowl and hopefully won't play in it because we are in the SB.. in Jerry I trust!! Or maybe I just started drinking too early this morning.
lol, Ranch, I think going with your last sentence might be spot on.

I think watching Dez' tantrums are getting as old watching Garretts' clapping.

Another post that deserves more than 1 like!

That video is moronic just at the beginning. He's saying tough throws are bad throws because it "hung Dez out to dry"....That was jus the first 30 seconds....does it eventually get truthful?

Like Antonio Brown, Mike Wallace, Hines Ward... All big guys!

I actually think the best fit w Dak is an Irvin, Andre Johnson, Fitzgerald type... a no frills, reliable guy who’s going to bring home the bacon. And it’s definitely what this offense needs. A hundred plus catch, 1,400-1,500 yard guy.

Here's the issue I have with this logic.

If Dak is comfortable with speed guys and guys who can run after the catch, why was he constantly settling for sitting routes that offered little opportunities to run after the catch? Where were the slants, crossing routes, etc?

Is that simply a coaching staff forcing a plan on him and Dak is hamstrung by that? Or is Mosher just pulling something from his butt saying Dak likes this when in fact, he has no idea what Dak likes?
As u said, more just pulling things from his butt.

I don't pay attention to the commentary, just look at the throws.

Here’s my ideal receiving corps:

X - Dez Bryant, Jaleel Scott
Y - Ryan Switzer
Z - D.J. Moore, Lance Lenoir

Keep Dez at least another year but draft Jaleel Scott to be his successor. He can do everything before the catch that prime-Dez was doing.

D.J. Moore is the perfect Z for our offense. Can’t say enough good things about him. He’d probably be Dak’s favorite receiver week one.

We don’t need Beasley. We have his younger, cheaper, more explosive replacement already on the roster. He should be traded.

I just heard recently on one of the Cowboys’ talk shows that Lance Lenoir is Dak’s favorite receiver and who he practices with the most. I have no problem giving him the final receiver spot if they have great chemistry.

Terrance Williams would be an addition by subtraction. I don’t care if we have to swallow his contract.

Thompson could easily be cut if we come away with better options in the draft. In my scenario, we did.

Noah Brown doesn’t really bring anything to our offense that the others can’t. No issues cutting him.
