And then he would be our John Harbaugh.

I just don't want this type of coach.

I want a coach that is a real difference maker as a playcaller or at least a coach that isn't so married to his system that he refuses to change.

I just don't think Garrett understands game day football at a very high level and that's why our teams have to be built in a way that is about us imposing our will.

So he is a GM. as for the bolded part above, I dont think you meant that the way you wrote it. But if so, HC have to understand the game situations, the weaknesses and make adjustments, otherwise you are advocating the Barry Switzer circa 1995-6 approach. It is only an advantage to have a HC that knows the intricacies of the game, which is why we probably lost to the Rams.

Actually I’m comparing him to just getting the damn team to the NFC championship game never mind a super bowl win. Be a final 4 team that is competing to get to the super bowl.

A reasonable fear considering who is in charge.

Yeah, I think some of this is exaggerated.

For example, McClay was put in the position he was by Jones because the coaches and scouts were never really on the same page and Jerry needed someone who could gather all the information, streamline it and try to filter the information to make it usable for Jerry to make decisions Draft nights were often a wild show with the coaches saying they wanted this, scouts telling them they were wrong and Jerry wondering what the hell was going on. It was well reported at the time that McClay was given the spot to be that point person and because he was well respected by most in the Cowboys. Not really sure how one can say that without Garrett, McClay never comes to be. That's quite a stretch.

Perhaps I am jaded, IDK. I will, however, say this. I saw nothing at all against the Rams that leads me to believe that Garrett has gotten any better. Garrett is a former QB, a former QB Coach, a former OC and a HC for 10 years. All of this and during that game, I saw an Offense that ran exactly the same game plan, that was completely ineffective in the first half, all over again in the second. I saw the same on Defense. I saw a HC with 10 years of experience, get out coached by a guy who has not yet finished his second full year as HC of the Rams. I saw the Cowboys get dominated by their former HC, Wade Phillips, now DC of the Rams. The same guy that Garrett, and Jerry BTW, set up to fail in Dallas. I saw that same HC, after the loss to the Rams, say that he expected Linehan back, only to have to walk that statement back and then be over ruled by Jerry and Stephen.

No, I don't think Garrett is horrible. I think he is average and I haven't seen anything that suggest to me that he is anything less or anything more.

Dilfer, Eli, Flacco and Brad Johnson won SBs. None of whom I think were tattooed as "epic"

You can win a Ring with all types. We won a SB with the cerebral type in Landry. We won with a firebreather like Jimmy. We won with well, whatever Barry Switzer is.

IMO you judge it by wins and the direction of the team. Wade Phillips had wins and then team completely quit on him. I see Garrett as a slightly above average coach in a league with few that count as excellent. McVay is the It Kid right now, last year it was Doug Pederson. The year before that it was Garrett himself.

And even then, you need a certain amount of breaks to win. The Saints were the best team in the NFL this year and Payton is a great coach, but they are sitting at home right now.

Honestly I am not going to get worked up about it anymore. HC, OC, DC ,QB - Kind of lost much hope. Just enjoy it if it ever happens again.

All of those teams had dominant defenses. They didn't get a ring because of genius Head Coaches.

Hmmm. One of those guys won a SB in Year 2. One is in a SB in Year 2. One hasn't made it out of the divisional round in 8 years.

That and they were trending down having gone 8-8 and then 4-12. Reid's record in KC is not that dissimilar to Garrett's over the same time. This year is the first year that his team went beyond the Divisional round. His team went 1 and done in 3 of 4 years and no playoffs the other year. You would say they're trending up, but the same was said about Carolina, Dallas, Atlanta and Jacksonville.

Slight nit, but Coughlin is a Hall of Fame coach. If he isn't a genius he's about as close as one can get to genius head coach as you can. He was a good college coach, put an expansion franchise in two AFCCG games in their first 5 years, then won two SBs in NY.

I just don't think if a coach has been a head guy at 1 place for 10 years and hasn't had playoff success that he is magically going to capture it.

Time has shown us what Garrett is.

And the year before Peterson it had nothing to do with Garrett and everything to do with Dallas imposing their will on the ground.

As you pointed out.. Even Barry Switzer can win with that formula except when Barry won the Superbowl and Garrett was 1 and done with his 1 seed.

Garrett is like a poor mans Marty Schottenheimer.

why you over complicate things so much? Someone asks you how is your coach. You're reply should be "He's Jason Garrett" And then realization will dawn on their face, and they'll pat you on your back to comfort you.

And in the case of Eli in 2007, IIRC, they started 0-2 or 0-3 and there was a budding mutiny. It was even speculated Coughlin was going to be fired.

I won't disagree, but you can say that about 99% of the coaches in this league.
