A thread for pick #47

I would take Marcus Smith with that pick. I think he is vastly underrated.

My list for guys I would be interested in at 47:

Marqise Lee (WR, USC)
Jimmie Ward (S, Northern Illinois)
Timmy Jernigan (DT, Florida State)
Lamarcus Joyner (S, Florida State)
Demarcus Lawrence (DE, Boise State)

Doubt most of those guys are there, but I bet one will fall. I'd be thrilled with any of the five.

FWIW Jernigan may be off the board completely at this point.

Kouandjio. 20 year old OT. Even though he had injury issues he was dominant at Alabama.

LT - Tyron Smith
LG - Trai Turner
C - Travis Frederick
RG - Doug Free? idk
RT - Cyrus Kouandjio

Yummy.

Cyrus Kouandjio has bust written all over him......His combine performance was pathetic. I'd seriously not draft the guy. Throw in all the medical concerns and it amazes me people are still talking about him being picked in the 1st round.

Classic case of teams overlooking years of work in a conference featuring the best pass rushers in America in favor of the combine. Forget the 40 time.

STRENGTHS: Certainly looks the part of an NFL offensive lineman, boasting vines for arms (35 5/8 inches) and excellent overall weight distribution. He reportedly has just 16 percent body fat, an impressive number for any offensive lineman. He flashes good quickness off the snap and has the lateral agility to slide left to right.
Kouandjio uses his athleticism in pass protection well but he's even more impressive as a run blocker, consistently out-quicking defenders to create lanes. Kouandjio relies on good placement, strong hands and an explosive jolt to turn and sustain defenders.

Perhaps most impressive is that Kouandjio plays well at different speeds. He shows very good patience in pass protection but can fire off the ball when needed. He possesses exciting quickness and mobility when blocking on the move, traits Alabama head coach Nick Saban and his staff took advantage of by asking the left tackle to pull and lead running backs, on occasion.

WEAKNESSES: Not yet the sum of his parts. To this point Kouandjio continues to rely too much on his talent and shows limited technique. Choppy sliding into pass protection and has a tendency to drop his head upon contact.

Some were disappointed with his decision to enter the draft after an inconsistent 2013 season. Too often is satisfied with simply walling off defenders rather than punishing them.

Projects best at right tackle, a position he did not play at Alabama. Medical questions require further investigation.

COMPARES TO: D.J. Fluker, San Diego Chargers - Like his former teammate, Kouandjio offers the physical skill-set to make scouts drool. He does not play with the tenacity or physicality that helped Fluker, a fiery competitor, impress in his first season in the NFL.

We've worn out the discussion on pick #16 but I haven't seen any kind of consensus on our 2nd round pick. Obviously its hard to predict who will and won't be there, but who are some realistic options you see us targeting?

For me barring any major drop: Attoachu, Easley, Joyner, Crichton

In order:
Ward
Easley
OL

Alabama hype machine.

Any suggestions on 2nd round o line that will realistically be there? Not sure I see 1 worth pulling the trigger on in the 2nd provided Bitonio, Moses, and Juwan James go as high as currently projected.

They really have to find somebody that can be the top backup OG in 2014.

I would prefer Billy or Trai Turner in the 3rd, but I don't know where they will get picked.

Can James play OG in 2014? He is one of the more "ready now" OTs in the draft.

Many of the pass rushers probably go before #47.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a WR picked at any point.

If they were to trade down in the 1st, then it would be easier to consider trading up in the 2nd. That would bring more of pass rushers back into play.

I propose that they have a week between the 1st and 2nd round next year. LOL.

That would give us a week to focus on the 2nd round like we now focus on the 1st.

James can not play OG but I think we can take a guy later who could be a decent OG prospect. To me, the value of having James or another quality OT more then makes up for the Guard concerns because of pending contract issues with Free. Not only do I not want to pay Free more money, which we will almost certainly have to do if we extend him but, we will also still have to draft or sign another OT IMO because I'm not sure we have another RT on the squad.

Parnell has shown to be a legit backup and reports are that Weems has made significant progress. They have Zero depth at OG. I'm fine not drafting for need with the exception of OL. You have to have a good OL when you have a 34 year old QB with back problems. There does not appear to be much available in free agency at OG and Waters appearently never had the required surgery that was needed for him to play again.

I'd rather have someone coming off an ACL tear than someone with a bum knee. Bama players underachieve in the NFL and Saban grinds them into old men

I think Parnell is a decent Swing Tackle but I don't believe he's a RT. Weems is a guy they are trying to develop but he's not a guy I'm looking at starting in the next year or so, which means that we will either have to extend Free or sign a starter. That will be much more expensive then going out and signing a decent Guard IMO. If we can get a good Tackle option, I think we draft that guy because you can pick up a good Guard at almost any point in this draft or in FA. Financially, it makes more sense to sign a Guard then it does a tackle IMO.

if the team is looking to draft a WR somewhat high, I'd hope they take a look at Allen Robinson. Kid was a beast at PSU

I agree with the general concept for future years, but they don't have anything at backup OG for this season.

If Weems is ever going to start, he should be ready by 2015.

Have you reviewed Parnell's game footage in depth?

No, not in detail. I have watched him play when given the opportunity but I can not say that I have made a specific attempt to break him down. However, I will say that from what I've watched of Parnell, I don't think he's a long term answer at RT. I think he's a swing at best but I could be wrong. I have to be honest, I don't have a lot of confidence that Weems is the answer. He has relatively little experience and it's hard to know what he can be. I would not recommend going into the season with Weems as the primary backup at RT. Maybe the Cowboys feel differently but I don't know. Unless the Cowboys feel like Free is going to be the long term answer at RT, I think they have to draft somebody and start getting them ready for a starting role in the next year or so.

I watched all of the snaps that Weems took in the preseason with the Cowboys.

I can't say that anything is definite with him, but I can see the upside. He reminded me of Leary in the 2012 preseason in that you could see NFL physical ability, but he needed to develop as an NFL player.

I've studied Parnell and Free more than any other players, ever. I watched every snap that Parnell has taken with the Cowboys in both preseason and regular season games at least 10in time each. I'm completely convinced that he would be better than Free if he had the chance to start about 4 games. He has maxed out as a practice player and can only get better if he is playing real games. He might make more mistakes in those first few games, but it wouldn't take long before he surpassed Free. He is much much stronger than Free and a little more athletic. He has shown the ability to overpower defenders which is something that Free has never done.

I'm not saying that Parnell would definitely be a great RT, but definitely better than Doug Free. Callahan wanted to start Parnell and bench Free in 2012, but "management" wanted to stay with the more experienced Free. The compromise was to rotate them in the final 4 games. In the 2013 preseason, Parnell was injured and missed all but one game. In that game he dominated the Bengals rookie 2nd round DE.

Free was better in 2013 but they did some things in the OL scheme to cover up his issues.
