Did you expect anything different by asking this message board this question?

You weren't going to ever get unbiased and fair answers.

Reading this thread you'd be led to believe that the best DT ever (Aaron Donald) is a bum.
You show your ignorance of NFL history by calling Aaron Donald the best ever.
Both Bob Lilly and Manster were better and its not that close.
LA would eat Donald for a snack.

Mailbag: Aaron Donald vs. Larry Allen In His Prime?
Jul 08, 2022 at 09:00 AM

I love seeing some of the historic plays in Cowboys history you guys have been putting on the website, especially the one of Larry Allen's tackle to prevent the pick-six. I would love nothing more than to be able to see Allen in his prime go toe-to-toe with Aaron Donald of the Rams. Head-to-head, who do you think wins that battle? — RANDY CHILDS / NORTH GRAFTON, MA

Nick: Wow, that's a tough one. Especially tough because there's never a right answer there. Just like with any competition, they both would probably win at times in the game. But overall, I've got to go with Larry Allen, just because of his pure strength. Not saying Donald isn't strong and he's definitely quick, but Allen could certainly move for a big guy, too. I think Allen would be able to handle Donald most of the time, but it would be a fun matchup to watch.
I will take Larry, thank you.

Yes I know.

Old players, ESPECIALLY Cowboys players, are the best ever at every position.

I don't even know why new guys even play. They could never possibility compete.

Why do you even watch today's game then?[/QUOT

Honestly many times I asked myself the same question.

And all I come up with is even though it's a shadow of its former self it is still a bit better than the other three big sports That have become pretty much intolerable for me to watch.

You're getting it overpaid pampered prima donnas.

That don't even participate in anything close to what a real training camp resembled in the days when football was a great game

Heck Larry Allen made opposing players truly afraid and intimidated of his other worldly power.
To the point where they made up excuses and injuries so they couldn't play against him because of their fear.

Don't get me wrong Aaron Donald is a great player has tremendous quickness strength and agility.
But he is not a player so dominant that his opponents actually fear for their well-being.

Larry Allen was one of the few beings on the planet that commanded that type of respect

Aaron Donald in 8 years already has more All-Pros and Pro Bowls than Randle in 13 years.

John Randle, for as great as he is, isn't on the same level as Donald.

You're underestimating just how good Aaron Donald is.

I love Larry Allen, but to act like he would just handle Donald is foolish. They would both have their moments.
Nobody got the better of Larry Allen at his LG position in his 20s, nobody.

You have no idea how long Aaron Donald will be able to play or how his career will end.
There's a lot of good defensive players that you obviously have not seen play.

I don't care how many defensive player of the year awards he gets in this kinder gentler era of football.

Sorry not better than Deacon Jones Bob Lilly Reggie White. They played when football was still a man's game Not this deluded excuse we watch now
I would say Donald's actually reminds me of Alan Page. Page was small even for the era he played. Page was a lot of the time unblockable because of quickness, technique, and where and how he lined up. I saw every player you mentioned play. I am a huge Lilly fan. I agree we are watching basketball on grass now. However I think you are greatly under rating Donald. I think he would have been just as impacted, if not more so against the smaller offensive linemen back in the day.

actually Alan Page was about average size for most of his career; it was not until later when the huge OLine of the Raiders began to change things. The side where you had the Ghost, Shell and Upshaw blocking the Tiny Carl Eller, Doug Sutherland and the OLB there Jeff Sieman were all outweighed ridiculously. Shell and Upshaw by about 40-50 lbs and Casper when taking on Sieman had about 20 lbs on him. Pure muscle

Donald is not an all time Great like LA. I admit he is close; but he is not up there with Merlin Olsen and Bob Lilly and those that dominated their eras. Donald simply is not that dominate. Arguably the best of the current era but not an all time great.

Sad fact is in this era of so much coverage and media and such GREAT is thrown around all too much.

LA all day in his prime at guard

He was strong as a bull and was extremely athletic for his size and brute strength.
Sure, Donald may win a few times in 60+ snaps but if Dallas had the lead and could out the clock Donald would be asking for breathers.
