Adrian Peterson wants to break Emmitt Smith's rushing record

Really hard to compare them. Different rules, cap/no cap, etc.

Different rules? For a RB? What rules were different for RBs from Emmit Smith's era compared to Adrian Peterson's era? The cap thing helped Emmit Smith's career big time because he was surrounded by a team of hall of famers, while Adrian Peterson has been surrounded by scrubs. That's also what makes A.P has done even more impressive, teams constantly game plan to specifically stop him and he still has a career avg of 5.0 Y/C.

You're funny , I got the wrong avatar because I'm a cowboy fan who's not biased when comparing our players to other players. Ok, that makes sense! You say AP will wear down, though it's year 7 for him and since 2009 has production has been on the rise. So much for "wearing down", as of yet he's shown zero signs of wearing down. I know it must be hard coming to term's with this, seeing you're a big homer, bud. :D

Also as others have pointed out, at the beginning of Emmitt Smith's career he said he would break WP's record, though I'm sure no one here "complained" or shot him down. Wonder why.

Who's Biased? I am not. I just don't think AP will do it. LT was doing pretty well in his 7th year as well. He had shown no signs of wearing down and I don't believe he had the knee injuries AP has had. And, I believe a couple years later he hit a wall.

Curtis Martin, who was mentioned in here was awesome and then 30 came.

Not saying that AP won't. I just mentioned he is the only weapon the Vikings have. So, he will be used more often in more aspects in the game. Usually that means more wear and tear? In most minds it does..

If AP breaks it, He does. No sweat of off my back. Do I want him too? No, I don't want ANY RB too. Sorry, I am old school like that. I also still don't like ANY players from the Giants, Deadskins, or Egals. Past or present. And don't or wouldn't like em if they playe for Dallas Or , the fact that I hated when the Stealers got #6 before Dallas did. I was the biggest Ravens fan last season as well. Not wanting the Niners to win.

And, why would any Dallas Cowboys fan shoot down their own team's player who had a goal early on in their career ? This thing on? Good lord.

Homer is definately not a word that most in here would categorize me as that.. Look at my track record. :)

I agree with your premise, but your stats are a bit misleading. Emmitt had a horrible 2003 due to missing games with an injury. That throws his averages over that span down. Take out that season and he averaged 1034 yards per season on some pretty bad teams. Still not worth what he was being paid, but not as bad as you make it out to be.

Peterson is only 107 yards off of Emmitt's pace after 6 seasons. He is 1311 yards off of Emmitt's pace at age 27.

Yeah, and the last couple of years he was in Dallas he was sharing the carries with Hembrick...they were pulling him out on 3rd down...

I dont think it will happen..Maybe I am just biased right now...I do like AP...but the next 2 or 3 years could tell us a lot..once he gets 12-13K, and the goal in his eyes really seem to be in striking distance, then we can start talking about it...if he is still going strong at year 10 then it is possible.

AP is 107 yards behind Emmitt at the same point in their career in terms of years playing in the NFL; and that's including his monster 2,000 yard season last year. In terms of age however(Emmitt was 21 years old at the start of his rookie season whereas AP was 22 years old at the start of his rookie season) AP is 1,311 yards behind Emmitt at this point in their careers. I don't know if AP can make it.

The game was played entirely different. It was more run oriented and less pass happy. The running game took priority for most offenses. Now, with all the rules protecting the QBs and WRs, the league has gone pass first, run second.

Back in the day, Emmitt competed against some tough teams due to the lack of a salary cap (some crappy ones as well). I remember Eagle defenses that had R. White, J. Brown, Waters, Simmons, etc. The tough battles with the 49ers, Packers, Skins, etc...

Like I said, different time, different game.

Wouldn't all those favor Emmitt though? More run oriented = he had more carries. Through their first 6 years Emmitt had 250 carries more then AP, that's basically a whole season more of carries. I didn't watch ES (different era), but I've heard multiple times he had one of the best offensive lines, and he also played with HoF caliber players like Troy and Michael. With all the weapons around him you can also conclude that teams didn't stack the box on him, so that alone would've helped him out a lot. Again, I didn't see him play I'm just being rational. On the other hand you have a guy who's the only weapon on his offense, so logically thinking wouldn't that go against him? Teams can stack the box on AP, because they don't have to worry about Christian Ponder, yet he still has managed a career avg of 5 yards a carry.

Also I'm not taking anything away from the greatness of Emmitt Smith, never really saw him play, but I "heard" the dude could play. :D

Being run oriented, many teams focused on stopping Emmitt. Also, when he held out, we lost every game. Dont forget the playoffs games he played in, which makes his durability even more impressive.

I pity you. Watching Emmitt run was a pleasure. The 90s were great to watch. We had emmitt/Barry going at it at the same time. Rbs breakdown at the age of 30. Its like clockwork. I love watching AP but he has a very steep uphill battle to break the record. You have to be extremely productive and durable. And those offensive lines are vastly overrated. Nate newton was drafted in 1983, bounced around and became a probowler in his 9th season when emmitt came. Larry Allen (only hof lineman) didn't come to Dallas until 94. By that time emmitt had led the NFL in rushing 3 times, league MVP, 3x all pro, and 2 SB rings before he ever was drafted.

The last comparison is the best one. But that isn't what is going to keep AP from catching Emmitt. There isn't any way AP will get the number of carries the last few years in his career like Emmitt did.

More power to Peterson if he can pull it off.
However, smart money would bet against it.

That record is all about longevity, Emmitt's greatest ability was the ability to stay available. I love Emmitt Smith, he put his heart into this team... but AP is a more talented back than he was so it wouldn't surprise me if he came within striking distance... it's all about if he can stay healthy.

I thought if anyone would get it then it would've been Curtis Martin.

He was still playing at a very high level in his early 30's and then he just smacked into that wall and was gone from the game.

Barry Sanders is the obvious answer, the record was his if he wanted it and he really could have put it out of striking distance.

Talented back doesn't mean better back and longevity was not Emmitt's greatest ability. I get so tired of people constantly diminishing Emmitt's accomplishments. He is the all time leading rusher because he was great and very good for a long time and TALENTED as well. He knew where to run, how to avoid getting hit on initial contact, had great vision and was a warrior of a football player who would do everything to help his team win. Those are his greatest abilities.

Peterson is amazing, and what he did coming off knee surgery last year was incredible. That being said, he's 28 years old, and there's simply no way he's getting 9000+ more yards with the time he has left. All it takes is for him to hit 30 or 31 and lose a half step, and then suddenly those 1700 yard seasons are 1100 yard seasons.

Exactly..

Emmitt Smith was the best player on a team that was loaded with crazy talent.

It wasn't like Emmitt just did well because of the players around him.

Anytime he wasn't playing the Cowboys didn't look like near the juggernaut that they were with him.

You could take anyone out of the lineup, including Aikman, and we could still get by as long as 22 was playing.

Emmitt was obviously talented, but I'm just saying talent wasn't the reason he got that record. His longevity and running behind that OL had A LOT to do with it. Its a testament to Emmitt's desire and attitude that he got that record because there have been other backs that were more talented, but he's the leading rusher.
