If Peterson keeps up his current pace, the Star Tribune points out he'll catch Smith in Week 4 of 2019. That's assuming he can keep up this incredible pace for more than six seasons, and the odds are obviously against that. Peterson will be 34 years old during the 2019 season. There have been three 1,000-yard seasons by players 34 years or older, and two belong to John Riggins. Peterson keeping up his 99.4-yard per game average (1,590 yards per season at that pace) for six more seasons is just not going to happen. Only five times in NFL history has a 30-year-old back reached 1,590 yards in a season.

IF he doesn't break the record or get close it's due to his carries then, because if he averages 280-300 carries for the next 7 years he will easily break E.Smith's record barring injury. Since 2009 AP's Y/C has increased every year, and he's yet to show signs of diminishing. He's actually done the exact opposite, he's improved every year even after his ACL. Also the fact that he has only "rushed for over 1400 yards only twice in his career" doesn't matter, because all he needs to average is around 1350 per season. ;)

All he has to do is average 1350 yards over the next 7 seasons?

That's it?

After reading this post.

I'm convinced.

Might as well take the banner down now.

Lots of people think Emmitt holds the record only because he stuck around a long time to pad his totals. But he is second all-time in rushing yards through age 27 -- just 12 yards behind Barry Sanders.

Peterson, who turned 28 this offseason, ranks only eighth in yards through age 27 -- behind Sanders, Emmitt, Payton, Jim Brown, Edgerrin James, Clinton Portis and LaDainian Tomlinson.

Along with being second all-time in yards through age 27, Emmitt is BY FAR No. 1 in yards after age 27, with 8,195. Nobody else is within even 1,000 yards of him. To break Emmitt's career record, Peterson will not only have to break Emmitt's record for yards after age 27, he'll have to smash it by more than 1,300 yards -- almost 2,400 more than No. 2 all-time.

Good luck with that.

I've said all along, for someone to break Emmitt's record, they'll have to at least come close to (or surpass) Emmitt's production at younger ages, because that's the easier part of it. Peterson hasn't come close to matching Emmitt's production through age 27 (he's 1,311 yards behind), which will make breaking his career record virtually impossible.

How did his season last year compare to Emmitt's at the same age? What impressed me about AD was him putting up that number coming off of an ACL the year prior and with little support in the passing game to back off tacklers in the box.

Again, I don't think AD will do it, but I do think he's got the best shot to-date this side of Tomlinson.

Emmitt's the GOAT at his position.

Plain and simple.

Every other argument is purely subjective.

Rings? Check

Major records? Check

You put him in Pissburgh, Green Bay or NYG and he's celebrated as a Rice type NFL icon.

He's still #3 in my book, behind Brown and Walter. But he's a solid 3rd.

If he doesn't get any more major injuries in his career then I'd say he'll end up beating E.Smith's record, though probably around 2018 or 2019. All he has to do is average 1355 yards for the next 7 years and he'll get the record. A.P hasn't shown any signs of slowing down, if anything he's shown signs of improvement over the last year, and that's after a major ACL injury.

This is what he has to do for the next 7 years to get the record -

2013 1700
2014 1500
2015 1450
2016 1450
2017 1350
2018 1250
2019 850

I think those are very reasonable statistics for A.P to achieve, he has a lot better chance to do it then some of you think, though I understand most here don't wont him to get it because after all it's E.Smith's record.
I personally think he has a very good chance barring injuries. The reason why I think he'll get it is because he will have 2-3 more years around 1700 yards, and those alone will average out his bad years late in his career.

I don't know if I would call his chances very good, but how many of us thought Emmitt would ever break Payton's record? I'm not going to dismiss him until his career takes a turn like LT's did.

I applaud AP's effort . However, Emmitt's record is just untouchable. I will root for AP due to the fact he was a Cowboy fan growing up.

According to cowboy fans E.Smith's record is "untouchable", though if he played for any other team I bet you wouldn't hear that. Way to add to the discussion though, what a very insightful post that you contributed, way to support your position.

AP Y/C - 5.0
ES Y/C - 4.2 (that's even with the great team around him)

Enough said. Only way AP doesn't get the record is if he has another major injury, because AP is still on the rise baby! Though, I know this is stuff you don't want to hear.

Ohh and about that "GOAT", AP will take that title as well as the rushing record! :D

No record is untouchable outside of maybe a few MLB records that nobody will touch because of how the game is changed. I wouldn't put anything past AD after last year coming back from a major knee iinjury suffered at the end of the previous season.

AP IS that Viking's team. They have nothing else. No one else to go to. He will wear down.He still won't last out. It's Emmitt's and will remain Emmitt's for some time.

And, it seems you have the wrong avatar pic there bud. Seeing as your love for AP is so huge. eheheheheheheh

Didn't Emmitt say the same thing early in his career? Yes he did.

Don't get the criticism here.

His style of play does wear down faster than most. But then again I would have thought he would have started showing signs of that last year after a torn knee. He looked stronger than ever last year.

I'm sure he's got some sort of shot cause he's a freakish athlete and is in great condition. I'll say that I don't think he'll get it done. I think his body will wear down, great shape or not, before he's able to get there.

You're funny , I got the wrong avatar because I'm a cowboy fan who's not biased when comparing our players to other players. Ok, that makes sense! You say AP will wear down, though it's year 7 for him and since 2009 has production has been on the rise. So much for "wearing down", as of yet he's shown zero signs of wearing down. I know it must be hard coming to term's with this, seeing you're a big homer, bud. :D

Also as others have pointed out, at the beginning of Emmitt Smith's career he said he would break WP's record, though I'm sure no one here "complained" or shot him down. Wonder why.

Really hard to compare them. Different rules, cap/no cap, etc.
