After 3 years it's Tyron over Watt

People are arguing like the only benefit to a dominant oline is to keeping the QB upright. A dominant oline benefits the entire offense, which in turn benefits the defense just like a dominant dline benefits the entire defense and also the offense.

The truth of the matter is that expecting one draft to fix a ravaged dline is fantasy. We're looking at reshaping that unit over the next two to three years. Which is also why you can't abandon the oline, it's still a work in progress.

We're not going to come into the regular season next year with a Top 10 DL no matter what we do, it just doesn't work that way.

Watt is awesome but I have to go with Tyron. As someone mentioned its hard to find good left tackles, they are a rare commodity, almost as much as a franchise quarterback. You can generally find great defense ends, not to take away anything from watt though.

I don't believe Watt is the better player. Initially, sure but not now. The difference is Smith plays a position where when he dominates you don't hear about it on a snap by snap basis. If you did, his name would be called constantly.

Smith over Watt all day for me.

I think you would if Madden were still calling games.

Unless Watt can keep this up for 10 years, overall Tyron will be considered the better overall player.

Not very many positions I'd take over an All Pro LT. DE is not one of them.

Yep, but i would give the edge to watt as best player at their respective positions. But LTs are more valuable. But I believe watt is a difference maker. I was pro tyron back then but Knowing what I know now, I might take watt. Idk tho, I think Tyron will have a very long career here in Dallas. He's still young.

I think Tyron will go down as on par with the Ware and Witten picks in the post-Jimmy era. Absolute home runs. HOF and ROH players.

Of course the HOF is a looong way away but I really believe he's a freak of nature. He's just got to stay healthy and he'll get there. He's got the head for it. He's always going to be a humble hard worker. Combine that with his immense talent and only injury can keep him from being one of the greats to ever play here.

Tyron Smith future 1st ballet NFL Hall of Fame...the young man, now 22, can easily put on another 25 pounds and not have a belly.

Watt by a smidge. What he's done over the last two seasons has been amazing... even more so as a 3-4 DE.

Over the last two seasons:
32 sacks.
61 QB hits.
68 QB pressures.

And again, this is a 3-4 DE folks.

And then you can add it 21 batted passes.

Just crazy numbers.

Watt is the better player, but give me the Pro Bowl Left Tackle over the Hall of Fame 3-4 End any day of the week

I don't know if Watt is better.

Two of three years we've drafted offensive linemen who have been excellent and turned this line into one of the best in football.

Who did it - Jerry or Jason?

Agree with you on OL
Disagree completely on revamping the DL
Should be able to do if this year by signing 1-2 FA and drafting 2
Ware will take pay cut and sign spencer to - year deal

In my opinion difference between Watt and the next best 3-4 DE in the league is greater than that of any other position in the league. To me it is just a matter of how much you value a left tackle over a 3-4 DE.

Smith is already a better player at a more premium position and he is younger.

Watt had one good year and one dominate year. He has a ton of injury flags though (bad knees and elbows) and I don't expect him to ever have another dominate seasons again.

Tyron Smith was the better pick. After the season he just had, at 21, it's hardly debatable.

tyron smith was a good pick, but I'm getting the sense that a lot of you /don't watch watt on a regular basis. as unequivocally the BEST 3-4 DE (5 technique for those of you in the know), these kinds of guys don't just grow on trees. The only comparable 34 ends in this league are SF's justin smith and what used to be mario williams (now in buffalo but playing in 4-3). As a side, an elite 5 technique is INFINITELY more valuable than a guy like demarcus ware was in the 3-4 scheme (where he played the 'elephant' standup OLB/DE and was mainly responsible for rushing the qb) because the 5-technique (jj watt) has to set the edge, rush the passer, disrupt passing lanes. What makes Watt special is that he is quick and strong enough at the point of attack so that occasionally in a 4-3 over look, he can even kick inside as a 3-technique and blowup inside handoffs and screen plays.

The truly gamechanging 5 techniques need to be a perfect blend of power, speed and size. The guy is 3 years into the league and already has made 2 1st team All- Pros. good LT like tyron smith are certainly valuable because they protect the qb's blind spot, but tend to be much easier to project from college to the pros whereas many teams have swung and missed looking for a guy like jj watt. I would take watt in a heartbeat.
