After 3 years it's Tyron over Watt

But Smith is the best player on the team.

I never thought about that until you posted it but you are absolutely correct considering the position he plays. I would've said Dez confidently before even considering it. Was Romo until the back stunted the deep ball from his game. Good point.

Watt is the better player, but give me the Pro Bowl Left Tackle over the Hall of Fame 3-4 End any day of the week

No way . Watt is a top 5 defender in the entire league . smith is solid but Tyron lost us two games this season . Getting owned vs the broncos he hit romo and caused romo to throw int vs Denver . And that horrid holding penalty vs the lions . What a dumb penalty by smith . He is good but watt is elite .

Can't go wrong with either. Love that we have Tyron though. Shows great promise and he only just turned 23.

Agree with you on OL
Disagree completely on revamping the DL
Should be able to do if this year by signing 1-2 FA and drafting 2
Ware will take pay cut and sign spencer to - year deal

I've never seen it happen in one year anywhere, so it'd be a first for me. Maybe we can improve it in one offseason (I'm weary of those 1-2 FA and what their contracts would entail) but its not going to go from leagues worst to among the best in one offseason.

Teams with young, talented DL players usually do it over multiple drafts. The Rams and Lions are a good example - both have 3 young studs, but all three were first round picks.

I personally have no idea what Spencer will be when he returns and Ware taking a pay cut doesn't make him a better player automatically. If he does take a pay cut, I'd rather use that money to sign draft picks that to dump it into FA's and end up having to restructure even more bad contracts.

I previously said that i would choose watt. Here's another way to look at it: you could have tyron smith, but that in itself does not make a good offensive line. He can't block more than one guy at a time. You still need another 4 good offensive lineman to constitute a good line.

Conversely, you can move jj watt around on the line to get favorable matchups. He's not shoehorned into one position all the time. And because he is the disruptive player that he is, he also demands a double team, or multiple guys with their eyes on him, opening up lanes to the qb/ball for the guys opposite (Mercilus) and behind him (cushing). Having watt there instantly makes everybody around him better.

At the time I preferred Watt over Tyron, but I think most of that bias was that I had watched most of Wisky's games that season. Watt was simply unblockable and dominant, he was about as an impressive a defensive player that I've seen coming out of college. I liked Tyron a lot as well, but thought Watt would make a more immediate impact. I considered them picks 1a and 1b, if we didn't get Watt, then we better get Tyron, so I was happy. It's kinda like choosing between pork ribs and beef ribs. I generally prefer pork ribs, but I'd be just as happy with a big plate of beef ribs, so you really can't go wrong with either.

Tyron Smith future 1st ballet NFL Hall of Fame...the young man, now 22, can easily put on another 25 pounds and not have a belly.

wait, so he is a dancer now? :D

and, IMO, this one is easy...I take smith then and I take him now....he gets virtually no help on his side and he generally generates zeroes from the guy rushing on his side...he is an eraser....people are talking about this comparison, but if we had a lesser LT, then I don't even want to think of how badly our QB gets pounded each and every game...someone else said that Watt can move around for match-ups, but he can also come out of the game to get a breather....when Dallas is on offense, Ty is in the game..

I take Ty

I was extremely vocal about wanting Watt that draft but 3 years later and Tyron has become a fantastic LT so I'm happy we took him.

Still hard to say one is better than the other though, Watt is looking like a once in a generation interior player on defense.

Last year, some of you crazy kids were ready to convert him to a backup tight end or something. :)

Keep it in mind when judging like Claiborne.

If Tanner just runs through the hole as the play was designed instead of bouncing it outside then Smith wouldn't have been put in the position to hold. By bouncing it outside it took away the positional leverage Smith had on the defender.

It's all about context.

With the condition of our OL and our franchise QB getting killed, you take a player like Tyron Smith over a player like Watt every day.

Same situation today, you'd like to add another OT like Smith and move Free inside to become a more elite OL, but considering the condition of our DL, you take Watt without even looking at another Smith.

Both good players, but even if you think one player is a little better than the other, it's close enough that this is where team needs have to be considered.

I think you have to look at how bad our offensive line was at the time. If we hadn't drafted Tyron we would still be talking about Romo having no time to throw the ball. For that reason it was the right pick.
