Age Gaps

From a pure talent and performance perspective, we've had much better than Dez in the past decade. He was one of the best WRs, never the best, in the league for a few years, and he underperformed many of the other years. That being said, he was still leaps and bounds better than any other WR on the roster. If you look at pure talent and performance, guys like D-Ware, TO, Witten, Smith, Frederick, Martin, and to a lesser extend Romo and Lee, were far better at their respective positions and more consistently. The first 6 were arguably the best at their position almost every year, and the last two were more valuable to the team than Dez. There are probably others I forgot to mention. Those were just off the top of my head. You can even add Zeke to the list. The guy is still the best RB in the league and it probably isn't close.

Dez called out Garrett and his staff and those who stabbed him in the back. You can call Garrett and the players out but Dez cant?

Over the past two seasons, Dez showed that he wasn't a game enhancer for the current quarterback, Dak Prescott. Place that along side a defined decline in Dez's performance over three years...and that isn't a stab in the back move by Dallas.

First, Dez was paid as a very top receiver and no longer earned the cash flow. The Cowboys gave him an additional two seasons to prove merit...and hey, he didn't. The Cowboys will still pay him this season, as a top receiver when he is playing for another team.

C'mon, there are business parameters or there are juvenile reference points....

I dunno, I fall in the millennial group, really not getting a great grasp for the X's and O's till the mid to late 90's.
Watched Irvin forced out due to that neck injury, saw Aikman and Smith cut. The triplets that solidified the Cowboys as my team.
While it sucked to know their playing days were over, it was what it was. While I have favorite players from time to time, I don't ever get super attached to anyone. Rooted for the Cowboys just as much when Quincy/Hutch were the "QBs" as when Aikman and Romo were the QBs. When we won 5 games or 13 games.

The only thing that irked me about the whole Dez drama was how negative posters got about him. Sure, his play dropped and it made sense that he wasn't worth his pay, but dang, some started to make him sound like he was a bum his entire tenure here.

I said in another thread how if you’re younger (really like 30 and down) it’s going to be pretty hard to move on from people like Tony or Dez. It’s heartbreaking because they’re all we know.

Not to mention, JG has had enough talent to win it all. Now, those 90s teams were more talented, but it isn’t like we haven’t had enough talent to win one.

It’s extremely painful when you have incredible talents like Tony and Dez, probably soon to be Witten and Lee not get one. It’s hard to let go. I’m extremely bummed about Dez. I don’t care what anyone says the dude loved this team. He actually cared if we won. I don’t get that vibe about many of the players or coaches not just on our team but on any team.

I wish I wasn’t so young in the 90s because that would’ve changed my perspective on a lot of this. But it ain’t easy for us young guns to let go of guys like Dez. I’ll be mourning it for awhile. I feel blessed to have watched him play. Who knows, it could be an extremely long time that another Cowboy WR surpasses him. Might never happen.

It’s always team > player, but this was handled so poorly. I don’t feel pathetic for being butt hurt by it, he’s the best Cowboys WR I know (TO was never really a true Cowboy).

Certainly understand your sentimentalism towards players like Romo, Dez and Ware. I've been fortunate enough to watch many great Cowboy players but they all go eventually. I don't remember the first player released that I took personally. It may have been Dorsett. One thing I know for sure, I still love the game and the team. I've gone through many down times with my favorite team (Cowboys, Red Sox, Black Hawks, 76'ers in that order) but have learned they all come back around and have provided much joy at times, frustration at others. Sports is like no other form of entertainment. Great actors last a long time, great bands also, painters, writers, poets, singers all have some degree of longevity. Football players? No, average career 3 years. Probably why I love it so much. Players are ethereal. here one day gone the next. Hang in there. The Cowboys will be great again. For me they still are. I'm a sentimental old coot :)

I've been a fan since 1975. Seen many great players leave. I'll get over Dez leaving. It isn't even that I think he's played that great lately. It's that this team makes the same mistakes over and over and think things will change. Make the offense Dak friendly has the same ring as make the offense Romo friendly. After they did that they made the playoffs once in the next five years. The WR corps is not as good without Dez and this team needs to fix the defense. Looking good against bottom feeders is not going to cut it. And it seems like the Cowboys are trying to make Dez out to be the fall guy. A lot of problems with the Cowboys and Dez wasn't even near the top of the list.

I remember the heart breaking loses to the Steelers in the SB.....:oldcouple:

Trying going to school the next day, getting razzed by Steelers fans in the heart of "Steeler Country". It's amazing I stayed a Cowboys fan through that, but hardly surprising that I still hate the Steelers.

The conversation begins and ends with no interest in Dez from NFC East teams, and here’s why.
Since signing his $70 million extension, Bryant has 12 catches for 182 yards and a touchdown in five games against the New York Giants; 20 catches for 304 yards and a touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles in five games; and 24 catches for 336 yards and one score against the Washington Commanders.

Can he make a comeback? Yes, but injuries and the only style he knows has taken its toll.
Will he have a big year with someone? Possibly, especially if he ends up on a team as the #2 receiver and in a division without top CBS.

I'm 50 and can remember watching the Cowboys all the way back to the early 70's. I remember defeating the vaunted 'Orange Crush' in 78 and the excruciating pain in 76 and 79. I would say that the last 23+ years or whenever it was they hired Switzer have been a sad example of the mismanagement of a professional sports franchise. For those not fortunate enough to enjoy the 3 SB wins in the 90's, even the one that was won with a buffoon coaching the last remnants of what I like to call Jimmy's team, I really hope things do finally turn around. Jerry's learning curve is obviously pretty slow but maybe he'll get there someday or maybe his son will actually prove that he knows what he's doing.

Already you are violating the CZ rules. Bench this rookie!

I’ll take that. At least my parents taught me diversity. At least this rookie knows not to question or put down others that may be different from me or not have the same background or family structure as me. My advice is this: Don’t talk about someone not having class & then turn around & show you have none. Thanks

I remember seeing Coach and Gregg riding their dinosaur to the first games... brings back memories of the flintstones..
