Aikman on why he retired

How is that different than what I said? He was great until he wasn't. But some posters here think he left here with his full body in tact and could have walked into any other organization and taken them to the superbowl. On top of that they think just because he was a hall of famer and broadcaster that he could walk in and be the greatest GM in the history of GMs.
Yea and Manning's last year in Denver was awful. Doesn't mean he wasn't one of the greatest qbs of all time. Very few great qbs go out great. I don't think nobody in this thread mentioned him as gm here. Though I think there are many on the Zone that could do better than Jerry.

He had too many concussions. We wanted him to retire but he still thought he could play until teams didn't want him.
He was a shell of what he was. It was time for him to retire. Same with Emmitt before he went to the Cardinals.

I heard Aikman quit because of the concussions.
That is true. In those last years, Aikman couldn't take a hit anymore without being injured. I think he wants to think he quit for reasons other than health, but his body made the choice for him.

He was toast at the end of his career. He should have retired earlier than he did.

Just giving a full account. I mentioned he was great. Then he wasn't. His body gave out. Like I said.

It was time for Aikman to retire. A simple blow to the helmet put him out f the game. For his own health he needed to quit. Romo was the same. Any hit broke a bone somewhere. When you become that fragile it is time to hang 'em up.

I think the most interesting part of this is that he intended to keep playing and would have if Norv Turner had signed him in San Diego, then he almost got Miami. What stands out to me was Aikman was driven away from the Cowboys organization because of their bad decisions.

The part that made me cringe was that he got an offer to play for the Eagles. Thank God he turned that one down. That would have been really sickening to see him in an Eagles uniform. I've cringed when I saw Cowboys players in another team's uniform as follows:

John Niland in an Eagles uniform.
Calvin Hill in a Washington uniform.
Herschel Walker in an Eagles uniform.
Ken Norton Jr. in a 49ers uniform.

Thank God I was spared seeing Aikman in an Eagles uniform.

We released him in 2001. He didn't retire from the team.

He could not finish a game without getting a concussion. I really don't think there's any other reason why he retired other than that.
I personally think it was a combination of reasons. It was the concussions, plus how unhappy he was how the team was run, or at least that made him want to leave the Cowboys. Then, he didn't get a starting job with another team. He did get offered to be the backup in San Diego, but he wasn't interested in that. He came close to getting it in Miami, but they didn't offer him that. The final offer was to take over in Philly mid-season due to injury. I think he was wise not to accept that one. He was already an older player who had had concussions.

The Aikman love is ridiculous. He was a great qb here until he wasn’t. He’s been a solid broadcaster after that. The people that think he’s the second coming to football and some kind of football savant are delusional.
This opinion is riducolous. Aikman's 3 rings and HOF jacket speak for themselves. The man had a cannon for an arm and incredible accuracy. He played in Norv Turner's offense which was very conservative and beleived in winning footbal games with 10 minute TD drives. If Troy had played in todays game, he would be putting up todays yardages and TDs that you seem so impressed by.

Aikman stopped playing because he was cooked. If any team actually wanted him to play they would have offered him legit money and he would have played.

Aikman sought out a starting QB gig. He did not get one. That really tells you everything you really need to know.
Aikman had a horrendous final season here and was getting beat up. I remember going to the game that season at the Giants where he threw 5 ints and I thought after the game maybe it was time to hang it up.

I'm sure Aikman could have had opportunities elsewhere, but I think he recognized his talent was slipping, he was getting beat up, maybe the money or promises were minimal, he already accomplished a lot in his career and was it worth it to continue? Frustrations within the organization I'm sure existed, namely coaching that took away from the enjoyment but I don't buy that was the main reason because couldn't he solved that just going to another team?

So whats the issue? I think most Cowboy fans believe he was a great QB, not some kind of savant.
Then you aren't reading the same things I am.

What part of anything I said refutes that? Where did I say a word about stats? You're putting words in my mouth and clearly having an issue with reading comprehension. What part of "great" don't you understand? Do you think he could still go out and lead a team to the Superbowl? Then what I said stands. He was great until he wasn't.

Do you really think people are talking about a 60 year old Troy?
