Aikman vs. Favre in their primes: We know who Madden likes, but who are you taking and why?

Not so fast, folks.

Aikman was a tremendous QB, but he had the perfect situation. Farve would have won three titles in Dallas, too.

I'm not so sure that I agree with that.

Favre was much more gunslinger. Took chances that I don't believe would have worked in the Cowboys system.

I could be wrong but I don't think so.

I also highly believe that had Aikman been in Greenbay they would have won more than 1 title while he was there. He would have made their team better.

Just my opinion of course.

I think that it's a fair point to say that if Favre would have been more open to running the ball, he might have won more championships. He always wanted to air it out and that pretty much insured the fact that his Defense would be pretty much spent by the end of the year.

My $0.02:

On average I'd take Aikman over Favre, however, I'd take 'peak' Favre over 'peak' Aikman if that makes any sense.

There was a 4 year period there when Holmgren was still there reigning in Favre where Favre was the clear cut most talented / dynamic player in the entire NFL and it wasn't even close:
  • Won 3 consecutive NFL MVPs
  • Where he was very careful with the ball and had an incredible TD/INT ratio (for the time period):
    • 1994: 33 TDs, 14 Ints
    • 1995: 38 TDs, 13 Ints
    • 1996: 39 TDs, 13 Ints
    • 1997: 35 TDs, 16 Ints
Haven't said that, the beginning and large portions of his later career where very uneven. The Mike Sherman years (post Holmgren and pre McCarthy) he did whatever the hell he wanted and in some of those years he was positively Eli Manning-like in turnovers.

It's probably a bit note-worthy that Favre didn't play with single other HOF player on offense in that timeframe in GB unlike Aikman although Sterling Sharpe was certainly HOF bound before he suffered his career ending injury.

Anyway, in summary when taking the whole career into account Aikman was better, however, Favre at his peak was simply incredible in a way that Aikman never was (or maybe just never had a chance to demonstrate like Favre).

Jimmy versus Holmgren. Farve would have fallen in line here.

I think Aikman in that same west coast offense could have put up those numbers, but winning championships were more important to Troy than the stats. If Dallas could win by handing off to Emmitt and not passing as much then he was willing to do it. When forced into passing contest Troy could hold his own with any of them

anyone outside of a favre homer or Cowboys hater knows the answer to that question - Pick the guy who did not give several playoff games away with pics.

Yeah, Romo would half won three titles in Dallas . . . hail, what am I saying? With any luck Romo win his third playoff game before he retire in Dallas.

I understand the perspective, however, Troy threw a lot of picks in the playoffs too -- 17 of them in total vs 23 TDs and that's despite having the best OL in the NFL history and the most productive RB in NFL history taking pressure off of him.

Favre threw 1.3 interceptions per playoff game in his career. Aikman threw 1.1 interception per playoff game. Frankly those numbers are very close.

Aikman had 5 years of good play, and 5 years of average to very below average play.

I'm never been on board with Aikman being anything other than a good QB on a great team. The very definition of a "Game manager". He's not a top 15 QB of all time like many claim and he's not one of the worst like countless Cowboys' haters like to make you believe.

Farve. For the simple reason of his toughness and never missing a game.

That doesn't mean I don't like Aikman, Farve was just a warrior that came out of nowhere.

I'm not sure I like Aikman better than Romo, but that's just me.
