AJ Hawk released

That's BS.

Carpenter was a consensus 1st round pick. He was widely projected as a top 20 pick.

That doesn't change the fact that part of the reason that Parcells drafted him was that he knew his fater. That is widely known and was from Parcell's own mouth. Let's not revise history here. I liked Parcells but facts are the facts.

Really? Manny Lawson who still plays at 240? Manny Lawson whose best season featured 6.5 sacks (2.5 more than his next best season).

Yeah, that'd be a great pick.

Carpenter was a consensus top 20 pick. This has nothing to do with Parcells.

Everyone was disgusted with the Carpenter pick, obviously u thought it was great. How did that turn out for u ?

And the post = You have no clue

We tell you that you don't know anything because it is obvious. I swear, I never agree with Burmashave. Yet even he can see your foolishness.

Only productive because he played with AJ.

How does being right about carpenter equate to foolishness?

Never mind. Where is Rogah? Lmao

OMG. Like totally....

I'm sorry, I think you are having a problem with comprehension here.

Yes Bill knew his father. He did not REACH because he knew his father. Carp was widely viewed as a top 20 pick.

Gee, playing with guys like Demarcus Ware wouldn't help someone be productive?

Odd choice of reasoning there

I didn't think it was great.

But I don't use it is a reason to justify a dislike of Parcells. Get on the guy for his small college picks that never played a lick. The Carp pick turned out bad but it isn't because of reaching.

Interestingly enough, as I recall, Parcells did not want to take Carpenter (because of his relationship with his father). He actually commented on this. I think it was a situation where he couldn't trade out and he was the best player on our board. I don't know but either way, there were a lot of people who liked Carpenter. I was not one of them but there have been plenty of times I liked players that flat out sucked. DeWayne Robertson, the DT from Kentucky comes to mind.

The other LB on the board were pass rushing OLB (Hali and Lawson) who would have had to move to the strongside - poor fits when your pass rushing OLB never leaves the field. I wonder who he really wanted?

No it was because of Parcells past love with his father so he made a safe pick or so he thought. I liked Parcells, but he also was ready to take the LSU DE instead of Ware. Ware would have been gone so fast if we ever had made that move.

I believe Hali went earlier than their pick.

Hawk was a dominate LB at OSU and was projected as a top LB that year.

Carp was a great athletic guy who had size and speed but I think had a hard time transitioning to the NFL were you can no longer get by with being faster / quicker than your opponent. He was a low 1st round guy with good measurables, a great program but was played soft.

The third OSU LB that year also went in the draft, he was like a 3rd or 4th. Not sure what happened to him but they collectively had a great defense at OSU.

Wonder if Hawk got as much grief from GB for being a 5th overall pick, and to some didn't live up to it, as our fans give Mo Claiborne......ducks....

Difference is Hawk was just an average ILB for 9 years -- he has essentially averaged 100 tackles, 2 sacks, and 1 interception per season.

Thats no great shakes, but Claiborne has struggled at times to be one of the top 3 or 4 CBs on the Cowboys -- a team not know for stellar CB play the past 5 years or so.

urban myth that BP reached. Carpenter had been projected to be a mid to late 1st round pick. And the record of sons of former players is quite good overall.

Remember this was before we knew if Greg Ellis could succesffully make the switch to OLB. Carpenter was thought to be a good pass rusher and all around solid LB.

It was thought to be a SAFE pick. Sometimes they are; sometimes they are not.

Can I just say that I wanted Mangold with that pick? It's not all that common that I really want a guy we could have had, but pass on and it turns out I was right. So I just wanted to point that out.
Intriguing name to hit the market
also this. Didn't see a thread for him and didn't feel like creating one.

Didnt expect this. Theres going to be a ton of big name guys released this year though!!

AJ Hawk is one of the most overrated players in the last 10 years. Never understood the hype.

He grew up a few blocks from the in-laws and I actually watched him play high school ball a few times.

AJ Hawk slowly got phased out of the defense this season. He wasn't technically benched but when GB decided to move Matthews inside and keep Hawk on the sidelines as much as possible the writing on the wall was clearly there.

No thank you. On to FA/draft.
