An interesting similarity to the Giants 9-7 Super Bowl team

6022 yards, 400 total points. That Giant team was not very good defensively. They were good when they had to be in the playoffs but in the regular season, no.

That Giant's team also did not have 4 quarterbacks throw for over 400 yards in a 10 game span (could have been 5 if Brees was allowed to finish the game out), have a wide receiver nearly break an NFL receiving record against them, have another team break an NFL record for first downs, have another team put up over 50 points on you . . . I could go on and on, but the reality is this is not the same team as that 9-7 Giant Super Bowl team.

The 9ers handed them the game in the playoffs. Had absolutely nothing to do with them playing well.

Actually, the Giants didn't commit any turnovers in that game. So, yes, they did play well, especially when you consider the Giants had to go on the road to beat the 49ers.
Please, let's stop trying to minimize another team's accomplishments. It's the playoffs. Nerves, confidence and not making mistakes are a sign of a team playing well.

Didn't turn it over b/c the 9ers defense couldn't catch a cold. Eli was atrocious that game. The Giants made plenty of mistakes, the 9ers just couldn't capitalize.

Regardless of what they did or did not have, they gave up 49 points and were blown out by the Saints in the year they won the Super Bowl. You can be in denial about it all you want, but it did happen no matter how much you pretend it didn't. And I'm sure the Giants board was every bit as optimistic about their chances as the gutless crybabies on this board were too.

There is true 阴 阳 (yin yang) here. Does the defense suck? Yep. Does the offense not fire on all cylinders too often? Yep. Can they play with the best at times? Yep. This is not simple and yet it is. I don't know how much time Jason has. Jerry doesn't even know but this kind of game in year three even with a decimated defense will make him evaluate needs more closely.

I'm in denial? The truth is you are comparing apples to oranges. This defense is on it's way to breaking more records for bad play than good play. That Giants team was more disciplined and had a real head coach. It's not the same.

Is anyone else tired of these comparison/similarity threads? Just because one franchise does something a few years back it doesn't mean another one will do the exact same thing even if it looks there is some similarities.

Funny thing is, we all look at their run and want desperately to chalk it up to luck. Good teams tend to make their own. We amazingly never seem to make that luck.

that is total bs that teams make their luck. TOTAL COMPLETE BS. That Helmet play was PURE LUCK. BY THE WAY that was the last pass that player ever caught in the NFL. Just the previous down Samuels dropped a pick that he would almost never do anytime else. THAT WAS PURE LUCK.

Nobody is saying every last detail was identical. But it IS pretty much the same. There were plenty of bad little details about that Giants team as well. A middling .500 team went into New Orleans in the second half of the season and got blown out. So let me guess, you knew all along the Giants were going to win the Super Bowl after that game, huh? You're in denial. It really did happen... you can check NFL.com if you don't believe me.

We gave up 450 passing yards to the Giants. And that's with 6 turnovers. And we had a completely healthy defense aside from Spencer and Ratliff. The D had more injuries last year and we didn't give up record breaking yards. Well and our offense could score last year.

Yep, 500 yards with a healthy defense playing at home.

This season is circling the drain.

Can we stop with the stupid comparison??? It's like we are always just trying to replicate some other team and always trying to find a silver lining. The reality is this team and coach are just not that good. The defense couldn't fight it's way out of a wet paper bag. The offense? Well run 10 yards and turn and wait for the pass. Sorry those schemes don't win

thank you. right on.

Literally the only similarity between the two teams is the .500 record at this point in the season. Going by that, every team that is currently 5-5 or even 4-6 could technically sit back and say "hey, we can go on a run and be like the Giants!"

Are we talking about the same game? The NFC Championship Game from three years ago. Where Eli was standing in the pocket, under tremendous pressure and completing passes?
As for mistakes, so what? The Giants capitlized on their mistakes and the 49ers didn't. That means the Giants were more prepared and, thus, took advantage of their opportunities, like winning teams are supposed to do.
I don't understand why you feel the need to minimize what the Giants did. What, are teams not worthy of winning because they force their opponents into mistakes or their opponents make mistakes?
That's all part of the game.

We hav
I honestly don't think that we are going to go very far should we make the playoffs....are division is our only way in. But in that year the Giants traveled to New Orleans fresh off of two straight losses. The Saints proceeded to blow them out 49-24. The Giants followed it up the next week with a loss to the Packers to fall to 6-6. They then won 3 out of their next 4 and went on their super bowl run.

In the NFL strange things happen. Lets take the bye week and hopefully get some guys back like Claiborne, Wilcox, and Hatcher. Let D Ware rest the leg up even more. Maybe we get good news that Sean Lee will only miss 3-4 weeks instead of the rest of the season and then lets see where it goes.

If we win against the Giants and are sitting at 6-5 it may not look the best but we would be 4-0 in the division. Offensively lets hope we get something out of the money we are paying Miles Austin and maybe Garrett takes more control of the offense because clearly the Callahan experiment is not working.

I am ready now for all the flaming of how we are nothing like that Giant team etc....We may not be but we can cross the bridge of blowing the team up when we come to it. As for right now we still have a chance to make the playoffs and I will hold out that hope.
we don't have the hogs up front for a dominant pass rush .

This post sums up exactly what I was getting ready to say, so I'm just going to quote it.

Just because we are at .500 does not mean we will pull a turnaround like the Giants did, and based on the way this team is playing (even before this game) and based on an 18 year track record it's more than likely they will not.
